Very Important: be careful

GGMoonyCrisco:
I just wanted to throw in my two cents here, especially for people from out of town and young teenagers or people coming for the first time.

Conventions are fun, but it's always important to be aware of your surroundings. My dad has pounded this information into my head since I was small and it's great advice. Always know who's around you, where you are and it's an especially good idea to have a friend with you. It's also not a bad idea to know the general layout of things-- heaven forbid something bad should happen, but it's good to know where exits and emergency phones and equipment are (do what I always do- take down time to plan out what you'd do if everyone around you suddenly turned into a zombie!)

Exercise a reasonable amount of caution around strangers. Never travel outside of the convention hotel after dark unless you have others with you. Be safe and look out for each other. In the wise and immortal words of Freakazoid, "Buddy up for safety!"

Rosie:
I'd like to chip in my own opinion to the very good advice that's already been posted: Listen to that little voice in your head that tells you when something isn't right. It's never failed me. If something just feels wrong, it is wrong.

Exodia:
Safety is important. Don't be paranoid, but be cautious.

Chanelle:
Always check your maps!   One time driving down we took an alternet route. We were supposed to follow route 40 all the way there, well there was about a 200 mile stretch where we never saw a route 40 sign so we got all paniced and nervous, asking anybody we could for direactions, then felt really stupid when they told us to turn the corner and there was the sign =_=...

Watch your map, and avoid unnecessary stress and drama!

YAY! ANOTHER BOONIES PERSON!!!
seriously though, I do live out in the middle of nowhere in way Northern Colorado (as in almost Southern Wyoming). Denver can be scary to drive in if you don't go there often. I myself have only driven through Denver once, and I never got off the interstate really. I agree that you should make sure your driver is reliable and had driven in Denver before. Especially cause it can be easy to get lost, even for people who live there. (Friend lived there sixteen years and still gets lost).

My friends and I are going in a huge two-car carpool of 14+ people, so I also really encourage carpooling, but I won't go with anyone I don't really know. Everytime someone I didn't know asked if they could come along, my friends all got together in the Foothills Mall to meet and get to know that person before we agreed. Getting to know the person in a public setting is a good if you do plan on going with someone you don't know all that well.
