Free Art Software
« on: June 02, 2006, 01:19:01 am »
I have been meaning to do up some sort of article on this, so tonight I did it. I figure it will be a good resource for those artists that need a start in computer graphics and $0 to spend.

The article can be read here on my website.

Hopefully I didn't miss anything. If I find otherwise, I will add it to the article. Feel free to comment as you fell necessary.

Hmm, what about OpenCanvas?  I don't know much about it, except that I have friends who love it, it's free, is good for drawings that aren't hi-res (ones you'd like to keep online), and you can collab with people online.

I will have to look into it since I am not familiar with it. From first glance, it is not open source as the name would make it seem. It is a wholly fitting name since it is referring to community based collaboration. In fact, it looks like it costs money. Not quite fitting the spirit of the article from the looks of it. It looks looks fun software though.

Hmmm, that's funny--when I got it, it was free, and their version 1.1 is for collabs.  I'll let you know if I find a link...

Interesting.  Thanks for pointing me to Inkscape, btw - that was really helpful when I needed to make a new button for a webpage at work.

I had a quick look at your blog, but you don't seem to have a RSS feed yet?  I'd love to add it to newsgator...

It has been capable of doing one, I just kept neglecting to add it to the header. I just did it though and there should now be a lovely RSS icon in your address bar.

No, I use NewsGator - I need a link that shows me what the address of the rss file is....

Ok, ok... I put a link in the sidebar now. Just for you though. No one else can use it. I forbid it.

This isn't worth starting a new topic for, but the 3D program (Blender) mentioned in the above article had a new version released yesterday. It has had quite a few major additions including a sculpt mode that allows you to make a mesh like it was clay.

I'd like to mention Paint.NET. It's a free .NET-based program, mostly for photo editing and simple image manipulation. Very useful for basic image work.
