First time coming to NDK? Start here!
DJ Bullock:
Hello all! Your favorite all night DJ here to start your NDK experience of right! This thread is a combo of some threads started about going to your first NDK. Please read this if you have questions about what to do at NDK!
1) Register Early
This is one thing that people over look. If you register early you save money and time. Its cheaper to register early, you get a great badge and you can plan on other things. Such as who you are going as, who you are going to bring and if you need a hotel room or not. Which brings me to...
2) Get a Hotel Room
It has been said many times in this forum that the best Kan experience is at the hotel. No worry about where to change, where to sleep or where to store your stuff brought/purchased. The hotel room at NDK is going to take a lot of the worry about logistics out so that you can direct your attention to more important things like...
3) Making a personal schedule
Getting to the Kan early, around noon on Friday is the best, affords many benefits. No lines, knowing where the rooms are to navigate quickly through a crowd, and getting the final schedule early. The schedule lets you know when and where everything is going on. Don't wanna miss the special viewing of your favorite anime, a panel on cos-playing or costuming? Get a schedule and make your own personal schedule to make sure you don't miss what you wanna do!
4) Make time for you
There is a lot of things to do at NDK at all hours throughout the weekend. One thing you must do is make time for you. Make sure you get plenty of sleep, water and good food. No, sleeping in line for the costume contest doesnt count. Water is key to survive that too. No need to pass out because of dehydration in a big heavy costume. Drink water and plenty of it. Eat fruit and veggies when you sit for a meal or buy some and stick it in your fridge if you have a hotel room. Pocky and Ramune are dang tasty but when you drop of malnutrition on the dance floor Saturday night EMS is not going to be happy. Also make sure you bathe. No one wants to be around a person who has been in one outfit for the entire Kan. And on that...
5) Be Considerate of Other Kan Goers
Everyone is there to have a good time so make it your mind set to do that. Bad vibes and moods can spread quickly. Please's and Thank You's can mean a lot not just to staffers but to everyone at the Kan. Try to be considerate of those people in costumes. So are awkward to have and people running by you can be distressing. If you see that some is "trapped" by the people in front of them or looks like they could use something don't hesitate to see if you can help! Karma is a great thing a can come back to you!
6) Money!
Bring money! Lots! There are things you will see at the Kan's dealer room that you have not seen before that you will have to have. Bring money for that time. Please set aside some money for food also. 20.00 has been suggested. Set aside this money and DO NOT touch it for anything but food. Basically budget you expendable money for stuff to by and food and stick to it!
7) Be an Information Connoisseur
Check all available resources about the Kan. Where is it and how much? The NDK website knows and can tell you. Have a question about what people are doing, cos-play events/photo shoots or what the Kan goers think are the most worth while events? Forums are the best for that info. Get all the info you can to help make you have the best possible experience.
I am sure I have missed a couple things or suggestions. Fell free to post or PM me with them to amend this original post so that first times don't have to go through pages of info to find what they are looking for!
Holy Smokes Batman!:
I think DJB has covered pretty much all of the major basics.
Except for the MOST important thing of all for a new con-goer.
No matter what else.
Enjoy your weekend!
NDK is an annual event, don't waste it. On friday I usually sit down and pick over the schedule to figure out the big events that I REALLY want to go to, (Masquerave, AMV showing/awards, those kinds of things) and then, I just kind of bounce around all over.
I don't know about anyone else, but, I would recommend from personal experience, don't spend too much time in one place, there's so much to see and do, and so very little time.
Another thing, be social!!!
Don't just hang out with the group of people you come with. They're great, they're your friends, but, every year NDK gets bigger, there are literally THOUSANDS of people that you can meet there! Be agressive, well, maybe not agressive, but don't be shy. You'll regret it if you never talk to people.
And, I think that's about all of my rant.
Have fun and be social!
Events Overlord:
Ben you forgot one thing that is truly important.
Hygiene- Remember we are talking about 5,000 people being jammed into a hotel for three days. Take a shower apply deodarant as neccessary. I'm not saying this to be funny either nobody wants to be standing in line behind the guy who wears the same thing all weekend and doesn't shower because he was to cheap to pay for a hotel room and slept in his car, it is just common courtesy.
DJ Bullock:
I covered that in 4. Not to a great extent but covered.
