VGR 2012. What should change from last year
« on: March 19, 2012, 05:02:58 pm »
There are multiple things i would like to address in this thread, concerning the Video Game Room.

Firstly, a must for NDK 2012 is allowing people to bring their own fighting sticks for fighting games, especially tournaments. Adding sticks last year was a great first step, though the quality of the sticks wasn't a great experience since they were constantly used and beaten by day 2. If people brought their own sticks, it would make everyone's experience better. Though having sticks there shouldn't be cut out, especially if a multiplatform game is on a different console then what the arcade stick is built for.

Now, lets talk Street Fighter X Tekken. I think there should be 2 different tournaments for this game, a 1vs1, and team tourneys. If your not aware, SFxT  has a tagging system where you have 2 characters, and can switch them out when you want. There is a mode where instead of 1 person controlling 2 characters, 2 players are on the same team against 2 others. So, there should be a tourney for both.

Since were talking about tourneys, one thing that was a really REALLY big no-no was during the Super Street Fighter IV AE tourney. For some weird reason, each game was 1 round only. Thats ridiculous. Ive played in many tourneys, watched EVO and alot of other stuff. I know, that the standard for tournament games is time of 99, 3 rounds per game, and the best 2 of 3 games is the winner. A perfect example of why 1 round is not promoted was when my brother played last year. He was getting is butt owned, then he throws out a random ultra and wins. If there were more than 1 round, the real winner should have gone through. But no, my brother did. I really hope NDK changes the rules to standard tournament.

Theres a lot more room for improvement for the VGR, but if what i said gets addressed, it will be a great year for the video game nerds out there. What do you think, and what else should change?

Discuss.

Regarding the sticks, something similar was brought up last year in regards to bringing your own controllers.

[Dug up from the archives]
The difference between what you brought up and a controller is how they interact with NDK-owned equipment. It's fitting you listed self-contained game consoles with (seemingly randomly included) privately-owned cameras and phones, they have more in common with those than a personal controller which would be plugged into NDK equipment. Our liability concern isn't in the net value of what people bring (if that were true, can you imagine the nightmare we'd have cataloguing everyone's purchases from the Dealers Room?), it's the possibility of what can happen both to your controller AND to NDK consoles. If something happens to a console, that would disappoint a lot more people than a handful not willing to touch a community controller.

As theshadow said, you're welcome to use hand sanitizer if you're concerned. Or, the restrooms are located right next door for convenient hand washing.

I would assume the same line of thinking would apply to tournament sticks.  While it's not likely that something could happen to the console, it IS possible, though remote (especially if one malicious individual, for whatever reason, decided to tamper with his/her stick to achieve that end).  There is also the liability issue, namely, if something happens to your stick, we aren't responsible, and the best way to absolve ourselves is to disallow them.

Actually, that response from me is now a little outdated. I'm sure Alex (the head of VGR) will pop in with updates when he's ready. :)

Believe it or not, this early in the year, we're still discussing things that we can do better for the VGR.  No joke we just had an official con meeting this past weekend.   ;)

I'd like to thank GalacticShonen for the post.  Any thoughts and ideas con-goers have we appreciate.

That being said this post and any future posts between now and NDK 2012 will be read and discussed among the senior staff of the VGR.  Please let us know things you'd like to see and where we could improve.  That's what this forum is for.  Please don't be shy, just keep it civil and polite.

P.S.  Those sticks we had saved just for the tourney and only the tournaments were Official Street Fighter IV FightStick Tournament Edition sticks made by Mad Catz.   :P

I remember last year there was a huge discussion about bringing your own controllers to the VGR (unable to find which thread it was...). I would think that the same thinking will apply this year in that bringing your own will not be allowed. Any staff thoughts on that?

... and not so cold in the game room and the hotel too.

I, for one, LOVED how cool (temperature wise) it was in the video game room. Remembering YEARS of that horrible smell and humid STANK of the old game room, I can't help but support any idea that will result in less people sweating. Having everyone huddled together with a dozen or so TVs and game consoles creates heat quickly, and I was actually quite impressed how well the VGR crew was able to keep temperatures down.

This, a hundred times this! When the game room was in the old room I would walk in, feel the heat and smell the sweat, and walk right back out. This year I actually stayed in there for a while.

I third it, the temp in the room this year and having air conditioning in that room was a saving grace this year. I as well remember the hot and stanking room of the previous years which was nasty and putting the room in the restaurant area on the 1st floor was great. Didn't smell any con stank and enjoyed the gaming room at last years NDK and commend the gaming staff to make it the room for every con til we find another hotel. :)

I agree with everyone that I loved how cool it was. The fans and such felt so awesome. Especially with how crowded it got in that room. It was very comfortable.
