Charity Auction
« on: January 19, 2012, 04:16:37 pm »
I was just curious, are items purchased at the charity auction tax deductable? If so, is there somewhere or someone we can talk to about reciepts for items purchased. Any help on this topic would be great! Thanks so much!

First, let me say I am not a tax professional, so please consult one of them for something definitive.

The short answer is, "probably not."  NDK is a 501(c)(4) organization, which means we are tax-exempt organization, but that donations to NDK are not deductible as charitable contributions for the U.S. income tax.  If you are asking specifically about our 2011 Charity Auction, then the answer is "no", as the Japan Red Cross is not registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) organization.  We normally try to pick a charity for the auction that is 501(c)(3), but this year, we specifically wanted to get the funds directly and quickly to Japan.  In other years, you would need to give us a check made out directly to the 501(c)(3) charity we are supporting.  That cancelled check would be your receipt.

If you've got more questions, please feel free to drop me a PM.

Just one minor addendum: NDK is run by the Rocky Mountain Anime Association, which is the 501(c)(4) registered nonprofit organization. Otherwise, George is correct. We apologize for any inconvenience.
