What are your goto christmas music and traditions?
« on: November 30, 2011, 11:27:00 pm »
For music we love the peanuts christmas along with some elvis christmas stuff as the staples with some classics thrown in for good measure.  I've also got a bluegrass christmas album that I love as it brings back some memories of my childhood in tennessee.

on the tradition side, we watch national lampoon's christmas vacation a couple of times in december as a family.  It never gets old for us.  We also do what we call the five days of christmas where we open a present every day for the days leading up to christmas and then the rest of them on christmas morning.  It's really helped a lot with my daughter just getting overloaded by the haul on christmas and never getting around to playing with everything.  She opens each present and gets to spend a day with just it, and it's worked out very well for us. Obviously she loves it.  The truth is that my wife and I started it way back when we were dating because we could never wait to open presents and making it sound official made us feel better. ;)  It's usually the 5 days of christmas, but it's been the 7 days and once the 12 days just to say we did it. ;)

Just curious what music or other traditions you guys might have.

..to be honest, my family never had Christmas traditions, other than "Open presents and this is a day we eat turkey".  Sure we might watch a movie or two, but nothing that really constitutes a "tradition"  soooo~

During the past years, I've made my own, most of which relate to my dorky-anime-loving side.

1. Sailor Moon Christmas music.  That's right, it's out there. It's catchy and adorable.

2. Christmas Cake, which is like.. glorified strawberry short cake.  Actually a big hit with my mom and her husband as they're not too fond of overly sweet things.  If you want to make it, here's a how to vid! http://youtu.be/LmLkPBut8nI (BTW, this channel is awesome!!)

3. Trans-Siberian Orchestra music \o3o/

I agree on the Peanuts movie special

As far as music goes, my music is mostly classic artists songs like Doris Day and Sinatra and not some much actual holiday songs. Winter makes me feel jazzy I guess :P

Its not the season until my cat knocks down the tree or tries to climb up the tree.....lol....Skrae that's pretty close, though one year my dad killed the Christmas tree.

As for music, usually let's see....Sailor Moon Christmas CD, Vocaloid singing Christmas songs, Jingle Cats,  and one must not forget my mother singing, "Deck the Halls with Heads of Kitties" as song written in the name of a cat that knocked down the Christmas tree because it climbed up and couldn't climb down. A song dedicated to the name of cats everywhere that love to destroy Christmas ornaments and eat tinsel. (This song has nothing to do with beheading cats, so please don't think so...i can always give you the lyrics to defend this Christmas classic)

Christmas movies, we don't have any, after Lee's mother went overboard with "A Christmas Story" we gave up on good holiday movies, she made us watch it at least 10 times, then had to watch "A Christmas Carol" and I don't think she liked me singing "Grandma Got Ran Over by a Reindeer."

I just remembered a Christmas thing my family used to do, it involved watching a Muppet's Christmas special that had the Muppets going to Fozzie Bear's mother's house, then having the Sesame Street Gang join and the Fraggles.

That's one of our go to movies for the holidays in our house.  I love "Muppet Family Christmas".  It's usually that one, Alistair Sim's "Scrooge", "Christmas Eve on Sesame Street", "Muppet Christmas Carol", "Christmas Vacation", and various other Christmas movies all month long.  I must note, though, that any movie with a Christmas scene or take place during the Christmas season count in our queue, so movies like "Stalag 17" also make the rotation.

Other than that, Christmas Tree Pizzas for Christmas Eve is the other holiday tradition my family enjoys. :)

We make pizzas in the shape of Christmas trees :)

My family we always watched Christmas vacation, and open presents on Christmas eve. Recently I've started my own tradition of a huge breakfast on Christmas morning for the family. The whole spread, and I think I've come up with a way to improve my chocolate cream pie this year. Quadruple death by chocolate cream pie...mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Dammit Bob! Now I'm hungry. I do like the idea of the pizzas in the shape of trees. Are they full size pizzas?

Maybe half sized, doesn't do well on a full sized pizza pan, so we do them on cookie sheets, two pizzas to a sheet.

So I'm thinking oreo cookie crust with my ghirradeli chocolate cream but made with chocolate milk instead of just whole milk, then I saw chocolate whipping cream at Safeway so make my chantilly cream with that. And maybe some chocolate sprinkles on top ;)

Ronin, we use the pizza recipe on the Pillsbury Hot Roll mix, split it into 4 balls.  Shape them into Christmas tree shapes onto cookie sheets, then let each family member 'decorate' the pizza with their favorite toppings.  :)

Great for dinner that night, and excellent for breakfast the next morning since we rarely finish our own pizza the night before.  :D  Om nom nom nom.

And now Bob's making me want chocolate pie...

Good Gawd my stomach is growling now. I may have to try that (the pizzas, I've never baked a pie)

Bob, you're evil.

Back on topic, it looks like I need to find a new copy of White Christmas. The wife can't find ours.

A CHRISTMAS STORY
YES. On what's-that-channel. They do the 24 hour marathon thing.

My family was sort of splintered in an ugly divorce, so my mum and I are working on establishing new traditions. The highlight of last year was watching all of the Doctor Who christmas specials all afternoon.
