I have a little bit of a dilema on my hands.  I purchased two white wigs a while back for my costume contest cosplay.  I needed extra volume for pony tails, that's why I got two.  I pulled one out and styled it then sorta left it alone.  I went into the darkend room to put something away and to my shock and horror the wig was glowing.  I checked the other, unopened wig and discovered I had purchased two glow in the dark wigs.  Any ideas how I fix that?  It's not really a big deal on stage, I just don't know if I want to be known as the girl with the glowing hair waiting to go on stage.  I really don't have the funds to replace them so, any suggestions are welcome.

Did you have any sort of blacklight in the room?
Also, where did you get these fancy glowing wigs?! Most glow-in-the-dark things have a sort of neon greenish tinge to them that will tip you off as to whether or not they are supposed to glow.

If its not going to be a big deal for the costume contest, I honestly wouldn't worry about it too much. Hey! Some people may even comment on how cool it is that they glow! You never know! :)  There are a lot of lights out there, so I doubt anyone will see them glow..unless you have them dim the lights or something.

But unless you dye them, I don't know if there is any way to eliminate the glowing issue. I have never heard of any wigs that glow aside from the cheap-o hallween store stuff.

You might try using pins designed to keep wigs on. They are much larger than bobby pins, and are shaped like a very elongated U. (I... have blanked on what they are actually called.) You actually put them through the mesh of the wig (and your wig cap) to anchor in your hair. Then anchor the edges with bobby pins.

I also swear by toupee tape! It's designed to adhere to skin, and I've found it to be stronger than garment tape. Use a strip or two at your hairline. It kept my Vexen wig, which was notorious for trying to slip back - and often succeeding - at Animeland Wasabi, in place for the whole day at Anime Boston. Obviously you would use fresh strips every day. :)

Sure thing! They look something like this: http://www.sallybeauty.com/Jumbo-Hair-Pins/STARTE2,default,pd.html

I've seen them advertised as wig pins, and also as jumbo hair pins. I personally buy mine in a gold tone to match my wig. You may be able to spray paint them to whatever colour you need, though, to blend in. Use them liberally through the wig mesh itself, and then the bobby pins and toupee tape to secure the perimeter. :)

Subzeroscientist has some great advice.

Also utilize the power of pin curls and a wig cap!  Here's a great tutorial on pin curls: http://taeliac.deviantart.com/art/Tutorial-How-to-do-pincurls-45164922.  They allow you to affix your wig cap to your wig using the hair pins Subzero mentioned, and then you can use more hair pins to attach the wig to the pin curls AND wig cap.  The hair pins should go in at an angle, then once you catch some hair, you change the angle of the pin.

The next part of that deviantart user's tutorial shows it: http://taeliac.deviantart.com/art/Tutorial-How-to-put-on-wigcap-45629366

This has kept high-tailed poinytails on my head for hours without slippage, but great pin curls are the way to start. :)

Sakura - What about reselling them and purchasing white wigs?  That's what I'd start out by trying to do.

If you're doing a skit for the cosplay contest, just don't request full dark if you're making an entrance.  Otherwise, just stay out of darkened rooms. :)

I'm not gonna scour 13 pages to see if anyone asked mine, so yeah lol. I dyed a wig with sharpie innards mixed with rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle, and it worked the first time but it wasn't quite dark enough so I did another coat. Now with my second coat no matter how many times I wash it out and the water runs clean I can't touch the fibers without taking them back blue. Only slightly mind you, but still visible considering it's a dark blue shade. What can I do to get it to stop doing that before the con?I really don't want pictures of me with a blue sharpie streak across my forehead...

Kari - what are you washing it out with?  Just water?

If you haven't, try applying a little dish soap to the wig (not a ton, since too many dish soap applications can fade the dye), and it may take off the excess that keeps coming off on your hands.  Do this with cold water.

I also recommend you read the thread about this over at cosplay.com.  One of the main things they mention is that the quality of your wig may affect how well the dye stays in.  Is your wig kanekalon, toyokalon, or possibly elora?  Those are pretty much the three acceptable fiber qualities that will take dye.

Where did you purchase the wig?  Sometimes there IS no way to tell, especially if you picked it up somewhere random.  Typically wigs you get from Amphigory, Cosplay.com, and some E-bay sellers will be nice and high quality (and those sellers should advertise it!).  I guarantee you that if you found your wig in a local store (even Wizard's Chest), it won't be high enough quality to take a good dye.

Halloween wigs (the really awful frizzy ones purchases around Halloween) are pretty much the worst quality you can get.

What does the bag say the wig's name is?  Most good quality wigs will have names like Ashley 850, Perfect, Cher 951, or something like that, so you can always google the name and see what comes up.  If the name is simply "vampire wig" or "cheerleading wig" or something, that's another indication of the dreaded Halloween Wig.

Hope that helps!

I got my wig from Zeezo's, I looked at the tag and it said Kane Kalon and modocrylic fiber or something like that. I haven't tried the dish soap yet, I'll have to do that next time the sink is empty.

If it's kanekalon, you're starting from a good place.  I hope that helps! :)

Are the strands silky or kind of rough and kinky?  That's another indication.  If all you have to do is style it, you should be safe.  If it's dying you're thinking about, definitely do a test swatch.

Okay, so this isn't a wig question but this still involves hair. I have naturally straight black hair that goes slightly past my shoulders, with a layer that hits my chin, and long bangs that hit the bottom of my nose. , I need to curl it like in this picture.
http://myumyu.cscblog.jp/img/20071110090001.jpg

I have tried washing my hair and braiding it then sleeping on it. Did not work.
Any suggestions?

Hmm, well, you can try using something called Bumble and Bumble's Surf Spray, or make your own using salt and water (water plus several tablespoons of sea salt, in a spray bottle). Dampen your clean hair, saturate it with the spray, and let it air dry. If your hair is extra straight, you can also scrunch it up a bit for some extra curl.

Just be aware that because the treatment uses salt, it can be rough on your hair (salt damages natural hair, hence why swimming in the ocean a lot can make it a bit 'crunchy' and rough). So, it's fine for cons and occasional use, but don't do it every day. :)
