Wig Help!
« on: March 24, 2007, 05:56:03 pm »
Got a wig problem/question? Post here.

First, here's mine. Alright I am so bad with dealing with wigs. I can do my own hair just fine, I can even get it to stick up straight and yet not be glue stiff. However, blowing drying is how I get that done. I've noticed with wigs you really can't blow dry them and get them to stay that way. Basically I need a wig with layers that stand out a bit, kind of like a j-rock looking thing. How do I do that?

Por example: I need it to look like this http://cgi.ebay.com/Rocker-Col-Purple-by-Wigs-Direct-to-You-Wigs_W0QQitemZ140099603582QQcategoryZ45267QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting

Thanks!

How you can deal with the wig depends on the fiber it's made out of.

Another problem with styling a wig to look like that will be finding a wig thick enough to have layers. ^^;  But if you have a wig cut to that style, I'm out of advice. XD

I know that boiling water is good for flattening/straightening wigs, so maybe holding the wig upside down would do the trick?

Well, I am no expert by any means, but what I would do is take a Hot air gun and hold up the top layer while you blow on it...

Hey, I have a problem. I'm not sure what I should do about Sheena from ToS. I currently have short (just above my shoulders) hair, but I can grow it out...or I could get a wig, or I could get extensions and dye my short hair the same color. I don't know which would be 1) cheapest and 2) easiest for me. What do you guys think I should do?

Well cheaper would be to use your own hair or extensions but easier would definitely be the wig. They are hard to style at first but then all you have to do is slip it on and your set. Usually I don't mind spending good money on a good wig because that's the hassleless way to do it.

Well, the extentions might be pretty pricey too, I would do the wig. You never have a bad hair day!

Would it be easier to get it to be spikey in a ponytail if I got a wig?

Here is some wig 101 for you all! To give you an idea I am making Steel Angel kurumi's wig right now!

1. For staticky wigs grab a dryer sheet and gently smooth the wig with it. It takes care of all of the static.

2. To get a good curl in a normal straight wig or need to put the curl back in wash your wig shampoo. When wet set wig on a wig head. (you should be able to get a wig head at any salon supply place for about $5) When you have the wig on the head, get foam curlers (you can get at walmart for about $1.97 for 6 of them) and put them in. let them stay overnight that way, then spray it with hair spray. Vola, a wig with great curls. You can even get them to do ringlets if you want.

3.A good place to buys wigs is www.amphigory.com. Also if you want to add more layers to a wig you can buy weave extenstions to add to the wig from Amphigory.

4.If you want to bangs that look feathery, take what you want to be bangs and pull the from the rest of the wig. Then at an angel towards you, you want to almost shave the wig with scissors at an angel. just make sure that the angel that you have it at is the angel that you want the bangs to be. example, if you want the bangs to slide to the left, just make sure that you have the angel to left.

5.If you wan to restyle a wig, just wash it with shampoo. Let it dry unless you need to cut it or curl it.

6. If you have to travel with the wig make sure that you try to keep it in the orginal hair net and box. It's less likely to tangel, get bad looking, or mangled. If you already styled it and it won't fit in the orginal box, get an old hat box from the thrift store and put the wig on top to the foam head and put inside of the hat box. It secures it and keeps the style safe.

That's all I can think of now. If I can think of anymore i'll post them.  ;D

Fullmetal: Just buy a wig that starts out like that? ^.~ Cosworx.com sells the "Punky", "Punky S" and "Punky XXL" wigs. Of these, I've used the first two. In fact, the wig in my avatar is a slightly styled Punky with the back hacked off.
In addition, you CAN in fact use a blow dryer on wigs. Just try to keep the heat fairly low and keep it moving. if you focuse on one area for more than a second or two, you can melt it.

Industrial hot air guns tend to be a *bit* too hot ^.^;;;;;;;;

Kari: For the sake of a cosplay, get a wig. That way, if you ever want to do the cosplay again, the wig's ready to go, no dye-jobs or anything necessary. Looking at it, wigs tend to be a bit cheaper, quite honestly.
Extension wise, you're probably looking at about $10-20 for the extensions. If you get them done in a salon, $60+ is a good guess. (As compared to $25-45 for a good, thick wig)

If you need any help with wig choice or styling tips (I can get my hair pretty darn close to that) just drop me a line, I'd be glad to help ^__________^ As a note, cheap hairspray and a blowdryer is all you need for a good spiky ponytail.

Mastergods: Unless you can put out Cloud Strife wigs in your sleep, I'd suggest starting with the Punky wig (as mentioned above). It's extremely fiber dense, the fibers are already sticking up (and therefore easy to put into those big spikes), and it takes to hairspray very nicely. Just chop off the back, section out the hair for the chunks, shape the spikes with your hands, and hairspray/blowdry.

*looks at picture*

... Wig time! XD
If your hair was shorter and darker, I'd suggest using your hair and finding a roommate who's good with a hair dryer. However, I really don't see you being able to do much with your hair as-is ^.^;;;
