Tech Support (New since the other was Dead)
« on: November 01, 2011, 05:50:22 pm »
Alright, I have a bit of a puzzling inquiry:

Dell Latitude c180

Symptoms:  Screen works wonderfully after start up, however afer I go to either the Bios, the Desktop or the log in screen, the screen gets extremely dim almost looking like it suddenly went black.  I reboot and it recycles.  Help!

I know this was posted a while back. Are you still having this issue?

It sounds like Windows does boot up, but when you get to the desktop, it "shuts off" from there. Is that right?

Have you tried turning up the screen brightness?

I can also help to identify bootlegs, if you have a questionable item, send me a message and some pictures if you can and I'll get back to you when I can.

I have tried to change the screen brightness but i still only have like a back image, almost like if you remember the game boy colors before they have back lighting

If you close and open the laptop without powering down (making sure it's not set to go to sleep or standby, and the monitor is set to turn off when you close it), does the light come back on briefly before switching off again?  If so, it sounds like the CCT (what actually makes the light in a many LCD screens) has gone out.  Unfortunately, while it can be replaced yourself, I would advise against it.  If you accidentally snap the tube, you don't want to breathe what's inside.  If you don't feel like buying a new monitor for it (either replacing the whole bit yourself [safer than just the CCT, but more costly] or sending it in for repair [even more costly]) and don't move it around much, most laptops have a VGA port for plugging in a desktop monitor.

The light only comes back on after a power down and reboot for just a few seconds.

It does sound like the backlight's gone out to me, which is unfortunate, but it happens.

I had the same thing on a macbook pro a few years ago. Backlight went out.  It would work for a few seconds and then out.  I could work on it in direct sunlight where I could see the screen. ;) It's typically not worth the cost to repair from what I recall.  You're better off just getting a new one unless you're under warranty of course.

I'd just hook it up to an external monitor so you can use it and transfer off the files you need until you can get it replaced.

You could chop it into a couple pieces using Windows Movie Maker. I just downloaded VideoPad Video Editor and it was pretty easy to use.

That sounds really weird to me. I've never had an issue transferring big files with Win7. I just copied a 25gig zip file to my sister's portable HD a couple days ago.
Planned cosplays for 2012:
Big Boss (Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater), Black Waltz 3 (Final Fantasy IX), Nappa (Dragonball Z), The Stig's Spartan cousin (Halo/Top Gear mashup)

Mesona: I'll bet that the disk you're trying to copy to is formatted with FAT32 filesystem, not NTFS.  FAT32 limits the maximum size of an individual file to 4gb.  It used to be the common filesystem for externals as it was compatible with more older OS versions.  You might check on that.  Your error message makes me think that's the cause as well.

Since I'm unfamiliar with Windows tablets (didn't even know they made em), I have a question (which may actually help), does Windows not have an App Store/Android Market equivalent?

Windows tablets/slates are actually full functioning Windows 7 devices. They are not running a mobile OS, and therefore don't have an app market like Android or Apple. You simply install programs just like a laptop. Unless of course you are referencing the new Windows Phone.
