People who made your NDK special - 2011 Edition
« on: September 12, 2011, 05:34:48 pm »
There's already a thread for this somewhere in the forum from 2010, but since it's a new year and a new NDK I figured we should start fresh. If this thread has already been started for this year I apologize but someone needs to tell me where it is because I sure as hell couldn't find it.

That said, I'll begin. People who made my NDK special...

My comrades from UW in Laramie, Wyoming, especially Amanda Benson. She will be leaving for a semester-long exchange trip to Kobe College in Japan, so this NDK was the last time our group got to hang together in full force. Sort of a last hurrah so to speak.

My cousin, Shilo, whom I invited with the pass that was supposed to be for my ex-girlfriend (we broke up this past summer, sadly.) She was a lot of fun to have around. My friends enjoyed her company as well. I'm glad she was able to join us for the weekend and enjoy herself.

My aunt and Shilo's mother, Yuriko-san, who was ok with letting her daughter crash with her older cousin and a bunch of other college students for an entire weekend. She also helped me out when we found out too late that Shilo didn't have enough money for the tab at the sushi restaurant we went to on Sunday. ^^\/

Shilo's boyfriend, Changa, who came Saturday so he could take her to the rave. As one of Shilo's closest male relatives, it's my job to screen her potential suitors. :P If you are reading this, Changa, you passed the test. The Sutherburg family welcomes you.

A cosplayer  from Salt Lake City that I met at the convention named "Red". She came up to me at the AMV contest because she heard that the AMV I submitted this year didn't make it to the contest or overload. She told me about a new category for the AMV contest at AnimeBanzai in SLC, specifically for AMV editors with less than 4 videos total over the course of their career.

Another cosplayer named Nicole who went as Izaya Orihara from Durarara!! I went as Shizuo this year, and a few of you on Saturday may have seen me chasing her across the Wendy's parking lot brandishing a parking sign.

A group of girls that I met in the elevator at the Hilton Gardens, who complimented me on my Shizuo cosplay.

Everyone else at the con who complimented me/hugged me/took pictures of me in my Shizuo cosplay.

The guys at the cosplay contest who cheered for me when I was onstage as Amanda Benson's stage ninja, holding that weird bat thingy and flapping its wings up and down.

The lady at the front desk at the Hilton Gardens on Friday night. She was very helpful and polite, even at 0330 in the morning when I came downstairs to use the internet and buy snacks at the little convenience store thingy by the front desk. Wish I could remember her name, I'd write to the Hilton and compliment her on her customer service.

The staff at the Taco Bell across the interstate, especially the one lady who thought my cousin and I were a dating couple, for putting us into a massively awkward situation that we will probably be still laughing about years later.

My friend Stubbs for driving me down to the con, especially because we had to go out of our way to pick up my cousin in Boulder. I would recommend getting a better GPS though, because I still don't know how the hell we ended up in Westminister when we should have turned off I-25 into Longmont.

The Link cosplayer in the green room for the Intermediate section of the cosplay contest. Not only was your cosplay amazing, but it was fun talking about all things Legend of Zelda with you.

The vendor at Artist's Alley who sells the steampunk jewelry made out of cannibalized watches and clocks. I found a nice ring at your table that I bought and I will be sending it to an old high school friend in Memphis for her 21st birthday.

Everyone on Deviant Art who has commented, favorited, or otherwise mentioned the cosplay pictures I took. If you want to see them this is my page: http://long-live-japan.deviantart.com

More as I remember them -_-'

Getting to see a Harlock cosplayer. One of my all time favorite characters and seemingly no one has ever even heard of the series he is from *sigh* but there was someone awesome enough to actually cosplay him this year it made my NDK!

This is to those individuals I don't really know personally:

- That Marchingstuck Karkat, Terezi and Jade who let me follow them around till they changed so I could make sure to get the photo I wanted.
- William, the Hussie who conducted the Homestuck photoshoot. We was rowdy. Thank you for dealing with us!!
- My Ace Attorney crossplay trio as well as all the other Ace Attorney cosplays I saw, you guys always make my day and I love posing with you!
- The people at the dice jewelry table. I just love seeing you guys and your table even if I don't talk to you much. You guys make me happy though. :D
- The Homestuck trolls I ran into right on my way out of the con. It was nice to be able to hug a bunch of characters I love goodbye before leaving for good.

Pretty much everyone who wasn't there to be annoying or complain 24/7 are the people who make it grand. The vast majority of people who just came out to  have fun and just relax for a weekend with people they're familiar with is pretty much what makes me come back over and over.  Obviously my direct group of weebz are the people I thank the most, but the random encounters with people who love the same junk as I do get some credit as well ^^

Everyone who complimented our costumes. Specifically the girl who came up to us outside at night to tell me she absolutely adored it. Also all the people who in particular said that we looked and sounded as if we were the characters.
Starlit Productions, one of the groups in the AA who made us some moons for our foreheads when we weren't sure if ours would come in in time (they did, and I hope the group was able to sell them).
The guy in the Battle Karaoke panel that sang "You Give Love a Bad Name" and harassed our friend in his Shizuo costume :P (IchiSanSan up there, if you want to know).
All the people backstage at the Costume Contest. Talking to everyone is always wonderful.

Haruhi-dammit Rozen Middy, that needs to die and stay dead. And I'm sure the zombie hunters with the tricked out hearse in the parking lot this past weekend would agree with me.

This.

The wonderful artist, Miss Elise Trinh in Artist's Alley. My daughter had spent all her con allowance ($30) on other items before she saw Elise's My Little Pony print. Elise saw how heartbroken my daughter was and gave it to her for free.

Also, to the entire board of Directors that welcomed me in to the staff and treated me like I was old family. You guys made my weekend above and beyond the great con that you put on.
Planned cosplays for 2012:
Big Boss (Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater), Black Waltz 3 (Final Fantasy IX), Nappa (Dragonball Z), The Stig's Spartan cousin (Halo/Top Gear mashup)

The audience at the amv award show.   Singing with phones out during "Hold onto that feeling" was a great time. And having director jeremy there was fantastic.

And having my wife at con for the first time was spectacular too.

Oh yea and the rest of the amv staff, they were ok i guess :)

Everyone who visited the Asian Cinema room.

And everyone who didn't turn and glare at me when I asked them to continue moving.

Oh, and the people who did understand how the rotating door works.

My NDK was marked by 2 little things this year.

The first was on Saturday morning, I was helping in with the prop check/Dealers room line using my voice to instruct people on how to get in to the room when a group a girls came by asked to take my picture just because "You are awesome."

The other event was directly after the rave and my staff and I were busy tearing down when a guy came up to the stage and asked, "Are you DJ Bullock?"  To which I replied that I was.  He then said, "Your sets are always the best.   Thanks for DJing!"    I managed to get a "Thanks!" out of the huge smile that took over my face.

Just one person telling you that you are doing a good job is enough to make the work worth it

You, the attendees.

I was in the Dealer Room for 7 years, and have been doing the Security stuff for 4 now.

This year I felt more attached and a part of the attendees and staff than ever.  We laughed, we cried, we argued, and we laughed some more.  It was awesome...

Oh, and here's to the Staff member who asked for my autograph.  I am supremely flattered and a little disturbed at that one.  Just... wow.

Every staff member, hotel and NDK, and volunteer. Thank you.

And of course my thanks to Jan Scott-Fraizer. One of the most interesting people I've ever met, and she takes the time to talk to me and hang out a bit every time we meet. ^n_n^

And Tiffani, if you're a member on this forum, this is your fellow Power Ranger fan saying thank you for speaking with me in Tony Oliver's panel. You rock.

The hotel staff - Everyone was super friendly, accommodating, and supportive of our plot to build Death City in that tiny little atrium balcony! We bugged the front desk so many times about various issues we were facing and they were always very helpful and polite. The boy at the valet stand helped us watch our things and even came to see our balcony once it was all set up! People held open doors and the maids worked very hard (I /know/--I've worked as a maid before!). We were sure to tip people a lot, lol.

NDK staff - They were friendly and patient with me this year, and I did not get scolded about anything, even when my badge was hidden. I was happy to see them being more lenient!

Balcony onlookers: All the people who made comments on our Death City atrium, directly or indirectly. The enthusiasm and support was overwhelming and wonderful! Every little comment and congratulation we received made me feel so proud and bubbly inside. We never, ever worked so hard on anything in our entire lives, so to hear that people actually really enjoyed and were impressed by our work really made my weekend!

My friends: All of my friends. Christian, who was staying with us, and who frequently borrowed my clothes so he could crossdress absolutely made my con a happy one. Even if I started feeling depressed he would do something absolutely HILARIOUS and make me burst into laughter. It was so good seeing and hanging out with people who I hadn't in a while, and it was great meeting new people and making some new friends as well. I really want to start hanging out with my old friends more after this, and hope to build on the newer friendships that were formed.<3

My partner: If it wasn't for Felix, Death City would have never been brought to life. He was the mastermind behind everything, he had all of the ideas and figured out how exactly we would construct every piece and how everything would look and work in the end. He created most of the pieces while I helped fund a lot of it, and worked on a lot of the more tedious jobs with my sister (like cutting, painting, and so on). I lost so much sleep and money and sanity working on this project, but the result was the coolest thing ever. On top of that, we threw 2 other events that also probably wouldn't have happened without him. He is very passionate and driven and it inspires me to be the same, no matter how tired I am from working myself to death!!

Cupcake/Pocky guy: When I was handing out cupcakes after our Deathbucks shoot, a guy came all the way down from his balcony room because he wanted to see if they were real and asked me for one! I of course gave him one and he said I made his day. That alone made MY day, but later we got a knock on our door and there he was with a gift! He was so happy I gave him a cupcake he went around knocking on peoples' doors until he found ours, just so he could give me a box of pocky as a thank you!! I was SO touched. That was one of the sweetest thing anybody's done for me!

Rave guy: The guy at the Rave who saw I didn't have any glowsticks and gave me ALL of his bracelets. I thought it was really sweet that someone would be observant enough to notice I was a bit out of place and kindhearted enough to give up his lights just so I would have more fun.<3

The sweet Spock cosplayer who really appreciated our Deathbucks sleeves also made me happy. Also, seeing everyone's faces when we gave them Deathbucks sleeves, and to actually /see/ people using them on their drinks!

Chupacabras guests: Everybody who showed up to the Chupacabras party absolutely made my night. It was so fun. My camera went missing during the night so I got really sad, but someone returned it (I still have no idea who), so I am SO grateful to them. I would have been devastated had those pictures and footage been lost!

And lots more people.... it was by far the best NDK yet. I had the best time, and look forward to the coming years so very much.<3

I had a lot of fun participating in the costume contest! It was my first, so that was pretty cool.{:
As I've said in another thread, the Ultimo cosplayers, they were so cute. Ultimo is pretty unknown, and one of my most favorite mangas ever xD So that was very nice to see.
And there was a super awesome lady cosplaying Reborn on Friday morning that actually recognized me in my cosplay. I was being Raizou from Lychee Light Club (Another very unknown manga, that's actually my other favorite.) Hahaha as silly as that is, I told myself if one person recognized me, it'd make my con; and she made me con {:
