AMV Descrimination
« on: August 31, 2011, 08:29:53 pm »
I submitted videos for NDK this year and noticed that they wouldn't let pony videos in. I understand that it's an anime convention but I still think they should let My Little Pony Friendship is Magic videos into the amv contest next year, or at least have a specific MLPFIM video panel. People say "It's an anime convention" but if I were to make a video about Halo Combat Evolved (developed entirely by Americans) then it would be accepted, and that is not anime or even Japanese.

First off, where does it say that about MLP? The only thing I see it specifically saying no to is solely live action videos or slideshows. In fact, since it allows anime-style original animation, I see no reason (personally) that you couldn't do it, since it has an anime-style feel to it.
Second, it specifically does state that it can be from any game, but states Japanese is prefered.
Third, if you want a panel, make and submit it yourself or suggest others make it. I highly doubt NDK will discriminate against MLP so highly that they do not approve a panel solely because of what it is.

First they don't allow it, I sent in a pony video and it got rejected because it wasn't anime. Second I was just making a point saying if American videos games are allowed then why can't there be at least SOME exceptions for American/Canadian shows. And third I'm trying to get NDK to allow MLP in a panel that is run by them, if they are still hating ponies next year I may very well make my own panel.

Pony descrimination!? In our CON?

Is no place safe for the bronies?

I don't understand why they would allow video games in and not My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. They let in AMERICAN video games, why not AMERICAN/CANADIAN animation?

Besides, do you know how many people I've met who called the ponies 'Chibis' or 'something you'd see from japan' ?

Okay, ease up a bit on the rage.

Be assured that as with all things in the Con, we are constantly re-examining everything we do to make it better.  Does this mean MLP will be allowed next year?  I have no idea.

But don't worry!  Your feedback will be read by those who run AMVs, and will take it into consideration.

Ok, first off, I want to say I'm a total Pegasister and my bronies were the ones behind "PONIES The Anthology."  :D

But sadly, Ponies do not have a place in the contest. When we say "anime-style original animation" we mean things like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvjZ6VkLuCM

While pony panels and such may fly as general entertainment, ponies will not be allowed in the Anime Music Video contest. If we let Ponies in, then we'd have to let every animated show that plays on Cartoon Network, Disney Channel and Nickelodeon.

So while the average person with no knowledge of the awesome that is MLP may think "zomg, their Iz r big so they r animu" that does not make them anime.

So while I totally feel your love for ponies, sadly they won't be allowed in the AMV contest.

EDIT: Also, we don't have any AMVs with american video games in the contest. All have Japanese developers, etc...

NDK doesn't run panels. All the panels on the schedule are made and run by attendees (except for those that are made and run by the guests, and except for big things like the cosplay contest.) If you want an MLP panel you're going to have to submit it yourself, though as mentioned, since it's not Japanese, it may not really fit in with what NDK programming is all about.

Sorry AliensvsStein, gotta go with NDKs judgement.  The AMV are for videos primarily anime or at least Japanese developed games.  MLP videos don't have a place there at least not this year.  As others have said, a panel would probably be the best thing to try for for next year.  I have a couple friends who like MLP and obviously there is a big fandom(still don't get why, but not the place) so a panel would be popular.  But either you, or friend or someone will need to run it because as GGMoonyCrisco(Interesting name...) said NDK doesn't run panels unless possibly one of the staff happens to have the time or desire to do one on their own.  So just work out what you'd want in a MLP panel and submit it when possible for next year.

As for the video, don't get so upset and like it was mentioned, you're opinions are taken into consideration by NDK staff which is cool of them to really pay attention to the things that go on the forum.

I understand having a strong opinion.  I've got to tell you though, raging in the forums was probably not your best bet.

Generally contest organizers are pretty cool people, but it's always easier to take a polite private e-mail saying "I think MLP should qualify under these rules... If not for this year it would be great if you could consider it next year"  into account.

I also have to agree that MLP is not anime, so it doesn't qualify under the rules.

Maybe you should submit as a panel next year 'Not Anime Music Videos'.  You could fill out the form (it was pretty easy, I submitted a couple panels this year) when they open up 2012 submissions.  Ask for a room with a projector, collect some music videos with non anime source and have a screening.  That way it's a fun alternative and you get to choose what gets shown.  The worst they can say is no.

I don't know why everyone thinks I'm "raging". I have been very polite in my posts. I have just been expressing an opinion, just because it differs from your doesn't mean I'm raging.
