This thread exists to make our dress code as clear as possible and to avoid any issues before the dance.  We will update this first post as necessary as we answer questions, so if in doubt, start here!  The Dress Code exists to make things, believe it or not, more fun! A dress codes means that this is not an everyday kind of dance, and lays down some guidelines that really should make it easier to decide what to wear.

What does "Semi-Formal" mean for NDK NYE?

For the Gents:
A long-sleeve, button-up business/dress shirt, trousers/slacks and a:
  • Tie or bowtie* AND
  • Sports coat OR
  • Suit jacket OR
  • Vest.
* If the button-up shirt has a mandarin-style or banded collar, a tie is not required.

You must have all required elements to enter the dance.

For the Ladies:
A nice dress or a nice top/blouse with trousers/slacks/skirt. The dress must be at least cocktail length (no more than two inches above the knee, no matter the style). No t-shirts, beach dresses, swimsuit covers, lingerie/nightgowns or anything see-through.

Specific Guidelines (gents and ladies)
Dress length
Floor length is desired, but knee length to cocktail length (no more than two inches above the knee, no matter the style) is also acceptable.

Period Clothing
Ascots, capes, and knee-length breeches/breeks/culottes (with appropriate leg coverings) are acceptable.

Cultural Dress
Garments deemed formal to that particular culture, such as formal kimonos, kilts worn with formal evening wear, Senatorial togas/stolas (no bedsheets or unhemmed fabric, must be accompanied with a tunica and other formal Roman elements), etc. are acceptable.

Lolita dress is also acceptable, provided the skirt length matches our requirements.

Military Style Dress
Formal style military dress uniforms are acceptable. Utility uniforms are not.

Props
Props are allowed, but standard NDK prop rules still apply. There will be a "mini ops" table set up to handle all peace bonding needs.

Masks

Masquerade style masks are not required, but encouraged!

Shoes
Women: dressy, open-toed shoes are acceptable. (Close-toed shoes are also acceptable.)
Men: closed-toes shoes only.

We understand you’ll be on your feet all night and will want comfortable shoes, so we aren’t enforcing a strict shoe policy. Please use your best judgment and the guidelines above.

Cosplaying? Keep your footwear within the spirit of what you’re wearing, even if you’re going for comfort.

Not appropriate:  Denim, khaki, shorts, fishnet stockings, street clothes, and dresses shorter than cocktail length (no more than two inches above the knee, no matter the style)..

If you are not sure if your outfit or costume meets the guidelines above, please post a photo/pic in the thread below.  However, the final decision as to whether or not attire is acceptable will have to be made at the event.  I mention this, because we may see sketches, or photos, as they are presented here, and we may think it sounds/looks fine.  But what if the person changes their mind, or makes a material substitution before the event?  We can only say yay/nay to what we *think* we see here.  There's also the potential for someone to post a misleading representation just to get an 'ok' here, but show up in something else entirely.

The INTENT of NDK NYE is to be a formal event.  New Year's is traditionally a time to have fun, get dressed up, and celebrate.  We're just putting an Anime/Japanese/Cosplay spin on this evening.

Sooo I'm going to start now with a broad question to determine my plan of attack for my gown for this, seeing as I don't want to input all of the work to make it and have no chance of actually wearing it.

Anyway my goal is to do a floor length ball gown made entirely of paper or paper products (I have a tyvek base planned for the if/when things go a bit awry.) Would this be acceptable?

Okay so I went shopping today for a dress for my schools homecoming and I'm hoping I hit two birds with one stone. The only issue is that I did buy a cocktail length dress, but due to my height and my long legs it's shorter than what was stated above. I'll be posting a picture so the staff can see and judge whether or not it's appropriate.

Edit: PS If you guys could let me know by* Wednesday that'd be great, so I can return it if needed. ^^

Question! My brother is possibly attending and he wants to know if Kotetsu's outfit would be fine?

or if that pic doesn't work

If not, what else might he need to add?

I apologize for the delay.  Yes- thank you for posting your questions!  I'm behind in a lot of things at the moment because of the time off from my job that I took to be at NDK, and the subsequent con crud that continues to kick me around.

And now to the questions!

You had me at floor length ball gown.  I think this sounds really cool, and very "Project Runway!"

As long as it's constructed so that there will be no surprises or 'wardrobe malfunctions' should it get damaged, you should be just fine.  Also- it does get crowded on the dance floor, and people are likely to bump into you or brush past you.  Damage to a paper product gown seems likely- just go in prepared for that, and bring a repair kit.  ;)

Since I'm approving a concept, and don't have an idea of how the finished construction will be, I'd like to suggest that you bring a backup dress just in case something happens that might render the paper dress unsuitable for the whole evening.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how this idea turns out.  Please PM with with any in-progress pics if you have any more questions.

Thanks or posting a picture.  Because of your height, it appears to be just fine.  Nice find!

The first link didn't work (I got a messaging stating that hot linking is forbidden) but the second link worked just fine.

Your picture brings up something I'm going to need to discuss with the rest of the NYE committee.  Technically, as it stands as of the time and date of this post, the pic does not meet the dress code.  It would need a jacket, and then it would be fine.  Regardless of the jacket issue, just be sure the pants are dress slacks, and not khaki or denim, and they are fine too.

However, based on the feedback from last year, and a study of current fashion trends for Proms and Homecomings, we are discussing whether to amend the jacket rule to be either a jacket OR a vest.  This change HAS NOT been approved yet, and once we officially have a decision, we'll make the announcement here.

To anyone advocating this change, please do not post in this thread to do so- Keep this thread for dress code questions only.  If you have anything you'd like to say about this change, you can PM me directly.  We will make a decision on this rule shortly.

Happy day, seeing as I was finishing the bodice when I saw that the concept was ok'd (a big thank goodness moment for me at this point). And I have a back up dress set aside, because I'm paranoid and I really want to go even if my gown doesn't work out when I get on site.

I'm planning on doing a formal/semi-formal (depending on your interpretation) Umi from Magic Knight Rayearth based on this outfit. http://www.animepaper.net/art/56241/rune-god-and-umi
I plan on lengthening the skirt to meet the guidlines (mainly 'cause I don't look good in really short skirts ) but I'm wondering if having it longer in back than in front is acceptable. In other words does it look fancy enough?   Also what are the shoe guidlines? I'd like to be able to include Umi's traditional boots with this, obviously making them fancy with a near spiked heel instead of a chunky one and adding the designs on the tops of them. If not I can try and find an acceptable alternative, even if it's just a simple pair of black or white pumps. Just let me know so I know what I can work with. :)
Don't diss the mouse! He may look like a pipsqueek but he does carry a keyblade and who knows, he may have Maleficent at his beck and call.

A quick question for you! There is nothing in the rules about hats at all, so I'm wondering if wearing a fedora, particularly an orange fedora, is acceptable? Here is a link to the hat I'll be getting (sometimes you have to refresh the page for it to load properly :P ): http://www.e4hats.com/_e/loc/product/cf002fd-orange/Canvas_Fedora_Hat_Orange.htm
Obviously I'll follow the rest of the rules by wearing a suit, but I just wanted to be sure about the hat. :P

At first I was like, formal Naruto!
Then I was like, Lloyd from Dumb and Dumber!

I'm pretty sure the hat would be ok. landstander wanted to wear a top hat so I'll be waiting on this answer too. :)

I'm not super sure what I'm looking at... Is that a kimono with a few extra layers around the waist that drape to the floor?

That looks like a fun costume. What's the source?

i think it might be, im probably going to make it a kimono anyway. yeah~ i might make parts of the extra material thats around it a little shorter so it doesnt drape on the floor (i dont want it to get dirty or trip on something lol)

its a gijinka version of arceus from pokemon ovo

So I am sorry if this should have been put somewhere else. <--- Moved this into the Dress Code Q&A thread.  :) -- MagRowan

But I have a few question of the formal-ness of a few ideas I have in mind for NYE:

Aeon from Castlevania (Minus the prop):

http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/3233/19535aeon.jpg

And Eve (Nezumi) from N0.6 (the one in the dress):

http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/9398/733482.jpg

When I was discussing some ideas with friends, they said that both my ideas would not be formal enough for NYE.  I disagree however, and just to make sure, I am posting here =OO
So would one be more welcome than the other?  Would one be turned away for being not formal enough??  Sorry, I just don't want to be that person who doesn't abide by the rules X3

Also yes its like 3 months away, but I am probably going be taking my sweet time on the one I pick!

Thankies!!

They both look like they meet the guidelines... Aeon looks like a super decked out white suit. Instead of having the tie you have an ascot which is clearly mentioned in the rules.

The dress seems the same. It's a classy full length dress.

Seems simple enough to me. You might wait for a staff member to give you the official ok though. I don't wanna be telling you liiiiiiiiiiiiies. :P
