Why are there non-japanese related cosplayers? LOCK PLEASE
« on: August 27, 2011, 11:11:43 pm »
I really dont understand why IronMan Darth Vader Master Chief and other non-Japanese related cosplays were at NDK.

I know its cool but it doesnt really make sense, this is a Japanese con, correct?

its pretty random

EDIT-  i see your guys point.   some of those costumes are pretty cool anyways.

I think this thread has run its coarse.
I request a lock

Uh, yeah.  Look yes NDK is an anime convention, but it's also simply a convention and people dress up as whoever they want at conventions.  It really doesn't matter, and not to mention it's fun to see a Storm Trooper vs Vash or whatever combo you can think of.

Conventions aren't just for people to cosplay as whatever the convention theme is.  It's a chance for anyone to cosplay as they want and there's nothing wrong with that.  It would suck to tell people that the only cosplaying has to be anime related, and would just piss people off.

So not sure if you're saying this because you have a problem or not with non-anime cosplayers at NDK, but all I can say is just kick back and enjoy all the various costumes that come up.  Not to mention some of the best costumes I've seen over the last year or two have been non-anime ones.  Like the Iron Man and War Machine...damn those were wicked cool.

I kinda like the safety that cosplayers feel to bring their other cosplays to NDK.

My first con, I pulled into the parking lot and watched a couple putting on a Spawn costume. Anyone remember that awesome costume? Uh! Awesome!

The point is that, we're all geeks, and the idea of getting all huffy and purist about our con is kinda disappointing. :/

For the same reason you see the Japanese-themed cosplays at conventions that are geared towards non-Japanese stuff.
I'm standing behind you.

Another thing sure its a anime con, however video games are a big part of the anime scene as well. In my view games and anime go together like PB and Jelly since alot of anime like games and artwork and several things are apart of gaming as well as anime plus gaming is japanese as well as american so its acceptable that game cosplays are apart of NDK. As for spawns and vaders and stuff they are apart of our geeky culture and sure enough they are accepted at the con. Basically don't matter what cosplay you wear, just wear it.

Because cons are for geeks, and geeks appreciate all kinds of costumes, Japanese in origin or no. Plus, wearing a costume is fun!

Heck, the costume doesn't even have to be geeky if it'll make people laugh. Last year my friends and I went as commercial spokespeople (Flo from Progressive Insurance, Mayhem from Allstate Insurance, Mother Nature from Tampax, the Orbit Gum lady and Vince the Slap-Chop guy) and cracked people up.

Im with OP. i mean i see people get flak for wearing an anime cosplay at a non-anime convention. i mean, to me, it looks kinda out of place. like cosplaying at a renfestival or something like that. i dont have a problem with a non anime cosplay at an anime con but id prefer not to mix the different types. i mean why catagorize cons if anyone can dress up as anything? you might as well make them all just halloween costume parties.

I totally agree with Daft Punk.

I LOVE going to NDK but sometimes I'm feeling a video game cosplay.
I LOVE Starfest but sometime I wanna wear my anime cosplay.
I LOVE the Renaissance Festival but sometimes I like my Disney cosplay that day.

All I know is that I discovered that I love dressing up when I can. I dunno about you guys but I do it because I love it, not because I'm trying to impress anyone.
I could give a flying fig what anyone else thinks. You don't like it, you can geeeeeeehhhhheeeeeeet out.

"Why categorize cons if anyone can dress up as anything?"  Uh...because the CON is still an anime con.  Cosplaying is the the only thing about a con.  It's just a fun activity to do at a con.  That's why, just saying, if you look around at NDK while there may be non-anime cosplayers around the con itself is still anime/Japanese culture.  So...not sure what you're trying to get at by that sentence but it really just makes no sense.  People's cosplay choice doesn't affect what the con is about AT ALL.

< <; I'm gonna get flak again this year, aren't I... Yippee, I was looking forward to people yelling "THAT'S NOT AN ANIME CHARACTER! THIS IS AN ANIME CONVENTION!" at me again. </sarcasm>

It's just the nature of cons, OK? Conventions. As in to converge. Come together. Not to 'exclude' and 'kick out'. Because that's the only way to enforce something being 100% Japanese. And that isn't very fun.

I wasnt really trying to "exclude" or bash anyone, i was just wondering why some people dress like that. Well i guess you can dress up whatever you like.

And Daft Punk, nice helmet. My band actually plays daft punk songs, and i use a talk box to sound epic like them.

Who remembers the Ghostbusters with the epic car? NDK isn't just about people who like Japanese culture or anime. It's about people coming together and having fun. If you come to NDK and you don't know much about anime, that's okay. Because it's about having fun and meeting new people. :D

      I think....it's cause we're all... :B ..hur...hur.. "cut from the same cloth" :D!!...cosplay humor!!
......*cough*....

Really though, I mean usually, (and I'm not saying all the time) but usually, if someone is really big into anime, and final fantasy and stuff, they have probably played, or have seen someone play halo, and watched a few Red VS Blue episodes. (Or something to that extent) and I mean, vice versa too, if someone is really into Black Ops, and gets a kick out of like...Aqua Teen Hunger Force, chances are they have seen (and liked) an episode or two of bleach or something...and really, I have always been guilty of categorizing all of that stuff together myself.

So yes. Here we all are playing our video games, watching our "cartoons" (I know. But it's what we're accused of) and upsetting those who want us to emerge from our lifestyles, and conform, to which we say nay!

And NDK is our celebration of brotherhood. <3

Yeah, I've seen quite a few non-anime characters though last year I saw this gal dressed like Holly Quinn from the Batman cartoons and I've got to admit she looked hot. Throughout the weekend I kept asking "Where's your Puddin?" (Puddin being Holly's sweetheart nickname for the Joker). Based on her reaction she liked it. Of course I've seen my share of Heath Ledger style Jokers which to me just looked creepy.

For me, all my cosplays are anime or game characters (except my Pocky Pirate, but that's the only one lol). And even when I go to Starfest, I do anime cosplays too. But that doesn't mean you have to fit the con cadagory with your cosplay. I even remember being Luffy at the Ren. Fest one year, even if it wasn't for a meet-up, or that he was much a part of that timeline, I still did him. Basically, anime or not-anime in my opinion, a cosplay is a cosplay.

Hmmm, Halo armor not being japanese... I seem to remember Halo Legends coming out a while back. That's anime.

Really though, you can find anime/manga/J-game versions of just about any popular western franchise now. The line between anime and everything else is getting blurrier and blurrier.
Planned cosplays for 2012:
Big Boss (Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater), Black Waltz 3 (Final Fantasy IX), Nappa (Dragonball Z), The Stig's Spartan cousin (Halo/Top Gear mashup)

This is true there's even a Star Trek Manga.
