There's one rumor I've been hearing that says that because of the cap this year, you need a con badge just to be in the hotel. Like, if you're caught anywhere without a badge, you'll be kicked out of the hotel or something. Even if you're staying in the hotel.
The point of the attendance cap is to keep attendance levels in the hotel at a manageable capacity. A limit like this means that there will only be room at the convention for official (i.e. badged) attendees of the convention and/or guests of the hotel. So if anyone comes to the convention just to hang out, without buying a pass/badge, then yes, they will be asked to leave. The limited convention space is for the attendees that paid to attend the convention. It would not be fair to you, the paid attendees, to let non-paying (loitering) people take away your space when we now have a fixed number of badges available.
That said, there is a little truth to what you heard. But- this does not mean we will be going around and just kicking people out left and right. (What's the point of a convention without attendees?) It just means that if you don't have a visible badge on, you will be approached by our security staff. If you left it in your room- we understand. Just show a hotel key so we know you are also a guest of the hotel, and it can be taken care of. If it's in your car, you will be asked to get it. If it turns out that you lost it, you can go back to registration to get that sorted out.
Our security folks will work with you to a point- it's not a "1 strike and you're out policy." We know that in the excitement to get down to the floor someone will leave a badge in their room, or they will be hugged by so many people that they might not notice it when a badge falls off. So as long as you make an effort to immediately get your badge back on, you really don't need to worry. But! Keep in mind, our security folks have very good memories, and if they have to remind an individual multiple times, to the point where it no longer seems like someone truly forgot, then they will be escorted out. The only re-admittance at that point is to purchase another badge (if still available) and wear it.
So- just wear your badge, and keep an eye on it. If you notice it has gone missing, go to registration to seek a replacement. Our goal is not to make a new rule just so we can kick people out. Our goal is to be fair to the folks that planned ahead and pre-registered and to be fair to the folks that got there early and stood in line and scored a pass at the door. We are only looking to remove the folks trying to get in without paying who would then be taking the limited floor space away from the badged attendees.
