I heard this rumor.....
« on: August 02, 2011, 11:14:42 am »
Heard something fishy about NDK 2011? Post it here and staff will clear it up. :)

Let's start with rumors that are NOT TRUE, but keep being repeated on the forums and NDK's Official Facebook Page and Group:

  • NDK does not charge extra for the Rave, or generally anything at all (save nominal supply fees for a handful of panels that warrant it). The Rave is all-ages.
  • Yes, there will be a limited number of passes available at the door! They'll be $50. Pre-reg now (deadline 8/16) and save $10.
  • carmelldansen is not banned. It was never banned. We just ask that all attendees respect each other and remember that space is limited.
  • We did not strengthen the dress code, and the hotel has never required us to do so. The dress code is the same as previous years. See it here. Want to make sure your costume is okay? Post a pic or drawing on the forums and a staff member will answer.

What else can we clear up?

I think the reason why people were thinking the song was banned from NDK was because it was banned at the first NDK NYE Ball.

I think the reason why people were thinking the song was banned from NDK was because it was banned at the first NDK NYE Ball.

At the time of the first NYE Ball, I was unable to play the copy of the song I had.   I remember the attendee that dresses like "Chef" from South Park trying to lending me his copy to play.  I was unable to use the format he had it in.

It was not played during NYE Ball of this year?   I thought that I had played it after the Justin Bieber song for a little brain cleansing.

I UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING!

Thank you for clearing these rumors up, especially the one about the dress code!

There's one rumor I've been hearing that says that because of the cap this year, you need a con badge just to be in the hotel.  Like, if you're caught anywhere without a badge, you'll be kicked out of the hotel or something.  Even if you're staying in the hotel.  It seems too weird to be true...is there any truth to this rumor?
I'm standing behind you.

There's one rumor I've been hearing that says that because of the cap this year, you need a con badge just to be in the hotel.  Like, if you're caught anywhere without a badge, you'll be kicked out of the hotel or something.  Even if you're staying in the hotel.

The point of the attendance cap is to keep attendance levels in the hotel at a manageable capacity.  A limit like this means that there will only be room at the convention for official (i.e. badged) attendees of the convention and/or guests of the hotel.  So if anyone comes to the convention just to hang out, without buying a pass/badge, then yes, they will be asked to leave.  The limited convention space is for the attendees that paid to attend the convention.  It would not be fair to you, the paid attendees, to let non-paying (loitering) people take away your space when we now have a fixed number of badges available.

That said, there is a little truth to what you heard.  But- this does not mean we will be going around and just kicking people out left and right.  (What's the point of a convention without attendees?)  It just means that if you don't have a visible badge on, you will be approached by our security staff.  If you left it in your room- we understand.  Just show a hotel key so we know you are also a guest of the hotel, and it can be taken care of.  If it's in your car, you will be asked to get it.  If it turns out that you lost it, you can go back to registration to get that sorted out.

Our security folks will work with you to a point- it's not a "1 strike and you're out policy."  We know that in the excitement to get down to the floor someone will leave a badge in their room, or they will be hugged by so many people that they might not notice it when a badge falls off.  So as long as you make an effort to immediately get your badge back on, you really don't need to worry.   But! Keep in mind, our security folks have very good memories, and if they have to remind an individual multiple times, to the point where it no longer seems like someone truly forgot, then they will be escorted out.  The only re-admittance at that point is to purchase another badge (if still available) and wear it.

So- just wear your badge, and keep an eye on it.  If you notice it has gone missing, go to registration to seek a replacement.  Our goal is not to make a new rule just so we can kick people out.  Our goal is to be fair to the folks that planned ahead and pre-registered and to be fair to the folks that got there early and stood in line and scored a pass at the door.  We are only looking to remove the folks trying to get in without paying who would then be taking the limited floor space away from the badged attendees.

Here's a few more from the Facebook Group, which is where most of these seem to come up.

5. Rumor: NDK will kick people out if it gets too crowded.
We have an attendance cap now to try and control the amount of people. But last year, it was more crowded than it had ever been before... and still very far away from this year's 7,500 cap. We don't expect to actually hit that number for a couple of years.

6. Rumor: NDK is charging extra for ______. (the dances, concerts, panels, etc).
Aside from a very small amount of panels (less than 6, I think) with warranted supply costs (between $2 and $5), panels, concerts, dances, etc are free with your badge purchase.

I heard that the Zombies have been banned because they were not "family friendly" is this true or does it fit under the banned cosplay rumor category?

No. :)

As far as the apparent NDK-bans-specific-costume FALSE rumors, see here for further clarification.

I have always loved the zombies!  That said, I have asked some of the zombies to avoid becoming obstacles to traffic, or to avoid shambling along in a way that may hurt themselves or others, but everyone is welcome!

So- just wear your badge, and keep an eye on it.

This is probably a stupid question, but does the badge have to be visible at all times? For instance if one were to clip it to the inside of a jacket, then just open the jacket when badges needed to be shown, would that be OK or would (since NDK staff/volunteers REMEMBER who's who and all) they start accumulating strikes for it not being immediately visible, thus drawing staff attention? I ask because I crossplay, and my real name is nowhere NEAR gender-neutral, so my name showing plainly makes it really obvious.

I'm sorry, but the badge needs to be visible at all times.  It's either that, or me and my staff will stop you... a lot.

If your memory is fantastic enough to remember more than 7,000 people a day on sight, might I suggest joining the staff and teaching us your trick? :P

XD! It was just stated in a previous post not to try to take advantage of the staff, since they *will* remember you. I do actually have a pretty good memory for what people look like though. Unless they change clothes, I guess.

Trust me, if you're one of the handful of faces multiple staff members *do* know in the sea of 7,000+ people, it's not going to be a good day for you. ;)

:D I trust you …   :-\ or I trust past experience.

Dear folks who deicide to be ornery toward NDK staff and directors; you have been warned

They do (and we are not just saying this) have very good memories and they remember stuff for a very long time.

They are very tall and well built.(at least the security team is)

A majority of them know karate/taekwondo/jitsu

They can see in a 360 degree radius around themselves, so attempting to cause mischief behind their backs is just as silly as doing in front of their face.

They project their voice so loudly they don’t need megaphones and they make a lions roar sound like a meow.

And to get the topic back on track
I heard a rumor that Nick Frost and Simon Pegg were going to be at NDK this year.

Ohhhh! So it must have been just a rumor again. I heard people talking it about it at the dance, so that's where that came from. As for this past NDK NYE I don't recall. lol. The Bieber song must have really melted my brain XD lol jk jk.

Are we giving the security staff "Norris-isms" now? XD

I would love to know how these rumors get started, and why people aren't smart enough to check the main page or the forums to confirm them.
