Wyoming Anime and Cosplay Meetup
« on: July 30, 2011, 07:21:12 pm »
Greetings,

As there are generally few opportunities to get out and enjoy the hobby in the state of Wyoming and thus some rather sad Otaku up here I would like to propose we work to organize a meetup for interested persons.  I happen to live in Laramie so it would probably be in the southeastern corner area but I daresay we could draw interest from some of the other cities even as far as Casper.  If any of the people from the Northern Colorado region would be interested in this that would be great as well both from a population as well as background organization standpoint.  It would be best to try and do this before the end of the summer since the winter can be vicious and come earlier than expected but anytime before halloween would work.  I would tentatively suggest the weekend of August 12-14.

Hopefully this will open up some lines of communication for Wyoming Otaku and larger fandom that are a bit lacking at this time.  With luck we might even be able to work on things like a state or zonal cosplay group or ride sharing for conventions.

Thanks for listening and I eagerly await your feedback.

I would love to do this, but unfortunantly I'm busy every weekend up to NDK... Maybe another time though.

In all reality we can do it any time people are ready and willing to get together.  I simply suggested doing it earlier for momentum and logistics reasons.  What week or weekend after NDK would work well for you?

A second purpose of this was simply to build the fannish community in Wyoming as well so getting people together before NDK would help to organize carpools and the like.  I suppose that could be done on a secondary forum though for those interested.  Are you familiar with Sagecon?  It is a mini-con that we run here in Laramie.  The Sagecon boards are always up at Sagecon.org and might be a good place for more detailed organization.

Whatever the case we need to get more fans together and having fun - it is far too quiet up here most of the time.

That's an awesome idea! Any weekend in October or November would be good for me. It'd be nice to actually be able to participate in a meet up without having to always travel out of state. ^_^

No I'd never heard of Sagecon before. I'll have to look into it. I never saw it listed on sites like animecons and just assumed wyoming was void of conventions.

Yes, it is far too quiet. There are many closet anime fans in my town and trying to get them together for anything is difficult if not impossible.

thats neat, i had no idea there was any sort of con in wyoming, and in laramie too (where i just moved too!)!. i realistically dont think starting a mini con would really be feasible in wyoming solely for anime though, theres just not enough people. We could definitely try to attract more attention to sagecon though, something that i will be probably be going to next year.

something that you could try i guess though would be something like soycon (http://www.soycon.com/). its like a con, but theres no ticvkets or anything, its basically just a gathering spot on a specific day and time and everyone goes to the millenium park and other places in downtown chicago. that could work, and just have a good get together and romp around downtown.
at NDK 2009 i was gene starwind the entire weekend
at NDK 2010 I was a team rocket member with funky goggles, gene starwind, the busch beer knight, and a raver with a lot of lights and my flashing sword.

I quite agree that an anime specific con is probably beyond the scope of the current area population for Laramie.  We will continue to grow Sagecon and make it the best of all things fannish.  There are some things branching out of the University anime club that might be of interest.  We are looking at having a masquerade ball on campus at some point this semester for instance.  We are also quite open to suggestions and ideas.

The Soycon thing would be great - it reminds me of the GeekMoot concept I've seen around.  Essentially an open ended gathering of geeks on a Saturday periodically.  Everyone brings games, costumes, foam swords etc and just have a great time playing and hanging out.

It might also tie with the LARP and foam combat game concepts that have been simmering of late.  I suppose it is all in what people want to do.

On the original topic though did you have a day in mind for getting together for something or generally meeting up?  Ultimately its all about community building.

I know most of my friend at ACLC (anime club at UW) will be at NDK this year along with myself. I'd like to meet other otaku from around the state as well. Oh, and not that I really care, but... GO POKES!!!

My husband and I hail from Gillette and there is actually a huge group up here. We would definatly be interested in meetups, and if people are willing to travel up here for a weekend the Cam-plex park here is an excellent place to be at as long as the weather is good. We would also be willing to travel to Laramie or Cheyenne, or even Casper for a meetup.

So for those of you in Laramie the group that runs Sagecon (sagecon.org) is the Speculative Fiction Association.  We're going to have a table on Wednesday on Prexy's Pasture for club and org day and also have weekly meetings.

Nogardous - Yes the library does have WiFi ^_^.  The Library is a good suggestion so long as we can rent out some space for several hours.  I know the rooms there are reasonably sized it will depend like any place on expected turnout and event type.  I know some of the Fen here in Laramie would be quite excited at the opportunity to connect with their Cheyenne counterparts though.

IchiSanSanShichi - You make a good point.  Most of the people here will be going down to NDK this year.  If possible we should come up with a time and place at the convention for a Wyoming Fans meet and greet.   Maybe plan a few activities and get to know some of the other fans around the state at a place where they are already congregating.

Mrs. Armstrong - Glad to hear that the Gillette fandom is thriving.  Not the place I would have expected such blossoming although I understand there is a small convention just the other side of the black hills there.  I'm not familiar with the Cam-Plex but it sounds like some kind of City Park and those are typically great places to get together.  If this works out then I think it bears repeating and what we might try to do is have recurring meetups occuring in different sites and cities around the state to reach as many folks as possible over time.    These first few might be better in the population centers though.  Laramie, Cheyenne, Casper and Rock Springs.

Above all at this point we need to determine a day place and time so we can get underway before the weather closes in.  Would anyone be amenable to forming some kind of statewide group to facilitate this or should we keep it strictly on the boards here?  I'm going to tentatively suggest that we try for Saturday Oct. 1 and possibly longer for those interested or who have to travel.  I will suggest we do it in Laramie as we have access to all University facilities here.  Finally I will suggest starting at 10 AM and ending around 8 PM.

Alternatively we might try closer to Halloween but I do not know if other holiday obligations would severely interfere.

i think that would be good to have a meet and greet there/then. 4:30 in that sitting area with the chairs, i would be very interested in meeting other people in my state :-)

and as far as a little mini con of sorts, oct 1 might work, with possibly rolling over into the 2nd for long distance travellers, but it is something we could probably hammer down at the meet and greet mentioned above during NDK.

I wouldn't surprised if folks have run into each other in the past.  It should make it all that much easier to form a connection framework.  The upper Mezzanine sounds like a good spot to get together although we may want to try somewhere a little more quiet/isolated.  4:30 will be rather early for those of us who are starting later due to school or other activities.  On Friday I do not get out until Three PM.

Gets me thinking about carpooling though.  For NDK or the later meetup events it is something worth working on.

For the meetup then we might want to make up some kind of brief Agenda to take fifteen minutes and discuss how people see this working and what days and activities we want to try and make happen.  Also a nice big sign ^_^.

Hello fellow cosplayers! (:

I am apart of the ever-fluctuating cosplay group which is Arkham Associates. We hail from Laramie and would love to meet with other cosplayers within and near the state. We will be at Nan Desu Kan this year, and the upper floor near the Game room sounds like a good place to meet. However, we will probably arrive later on Friday, around 7:00 to 7:30 given our 2.5 hour distance and our classes on Friday. If we want to perhaps message each other's phone numbers, I can text you when we get there.

Also, we are planning to host a Cosplay Ball in October, most likely around the 29th if we can get the ballroom reserved. We are still working on a theme, but if you have any suggestions, feel free to shoot them our way!

Yeah, like UkeKid and NewHorizons said, there's a few anime-related events going on in Laramie this year. If anyone's interested please feel free to contact myself or my comrades.

Didn't realize there was so much going on in Wyoming, much less in the southeastern corner of the state! I'm currently in Cheyenne and we had two anime clubs going in Cheyenne, both I think are defunct, so starting up some kind of meetup or get together would be awesome! There's a group of 9 of us going to NDK on Thursday, so maybe we'll see all of you around there! Keep me up to date on anything that develops in Wyo!

Aye there are more of us here than you think.  We just need to get in touch with each other.  For those in the more local areas we might be able to do a fair number of things.  I get to Cheyenne at least every other week for one reason or another so if we wanted to schedule a regular thing on a say a monthly, biweekly or even weekly basis I think there would be a lot of interest in it.
