To answer the question of what the anime is, it's Sailor Moon part two. I only found one other on the Internet that was in fact a bootleg. However, they did not look the same and the bootleg had episodes 30 something to 72 while mine has 47-89. And it says that it has 4 all-coded DVD discs versions if that helps. Oh, and there is no UPC code on it. Well, on the box anyways. There is one on the plastic. There looks to be no Chinese characters anywhere. What happens if I did in fact buy a bootleg from them? Do I call the police?

One quick question. Does it have Pioneer, Geneon or ADV Films markings on the packaging? ADV put out a set of Sailor Moon sub-only with pretty bad encoding (like the opening song being very slightly out-of-sync with the animation). There is a possibility that it is that. Otherwise, I'd say it most probably is bootleg. There are several bootleg 'companies' who put out different versions of the same shows, so not all covers will look alike.

Also word of warning. People that sell bootlegs knowingly tend to get pretty hostile when confronted. (Emily got chased back to our booth at one convention for just looking through a known bootlegger's table and he screamed at her that it's none of her business. Con security had to escort the guy back to his booth), so unless you want a big verbal fight, it might not be worth it to try to take it back. You will probably be accused of trying to rip them off or something like that. And it will not be destroyed. They will simply turn around and put it back on the shelf to sell to someone else.

ALL US DVDs are Region 1 ONLY! ALL JAPANESE DVDs are Region 2 ONLY, and you cannot play them on most DVD players in the US. if you ever encounter a DVD that is all regions, or 0 regions, or region 9, then there's a 98% chance it's a bootleg.

Not ALL. Most are. 80-90%. And there are some Japanese DVDs that are Region 0, but they are a literal handful. I know (now defunct) Central Park Media put out some discs in Region 0, but they are pretty much the only ones who did. Can't speak for non-anime releases.

well, it's definitely a bootleg.

Anime on Chambers (The Anime Store) gets bootlegs in from some company called Gamer Cell in New York. The DVDs aren't the only bootlegs they have in that store though. Books, wall scrolls, all of their flat posters, figurines, plush toys, some keychains, and so forth are also bootlegged products. They also go through a lot of employees because the owner (James Anderson) makes unwanted advances toward many female employees and customers. Personally, I would stay away from that store. It's also attached to an Adult DVD store....... that's saying something.....

I would suggest Gimme Anime, Gimme Gimme Pillow Toast (When they are around), and Rainy Day Anime over Anime on Chambers. Well, not suggest actually, I would insist.

Anime On Chambers also purchases legitimate DVDs/Blu Rays from Best Buy and then marks up the prices on them. Honestly, you're better off buying many anime DVDs/Blu rays from Best Buy. Don't feel that you have to support Anime on Chambers just because they are an anime store. A lot of other stores also carry anime products. Game Plus+ outside of the Big Lots on Chambers has anime, Docs Games, Game Force, and even Mile High Comics have some stuff available. While Second Spin has a problem with carrying some (used) bootlegs thanks to buy backs, they generally have reasonable prices as well. Also, I get a 3DS Streetpass or two almost every time I go in that store. If you live closer to Greeley, I actually suggest Hastings for anime. They're great about it. If you're closer to Colorado Springs, I rather enjoy Rainy Day Anime. Also, if you're looking for a good anime club, there is a great one on Meet Up. I have trouble getting out to their meetings because of schedule conflicts, but the club is run by good people. There are also stores like Game On or Troll Country that have events that are worth checking out. It's possible to support the community and anime as a whole without going near stores like Anime on Chambers. The local libraries are also pretty good when it comes to manga and anime.
Hmm.. Evilish...

I'm not really comfortable with the direction this conversation is going. If you have a general question about bootlegs, feel free to start a new thread. Otherwise, since this store has been known to sell bootlegs in the past, and because we at NDK have a strict policy against doing so, I'm going to lock this thread.
