Isn't that just the same store that's been there liquidating for years?

That place went out of business, it appears that this place just took their place.
PSN:  Skrae     3DS:  3308-4741-5349     Steam:  Skrae (the one with The Undertaker picture)

I can also help to identify bootlegs, if you have a questionable item, send me a message and some pictures if you can and I'll get back to you when I can.

yep. roger and i checked it out yesterday. it's not a "new store", just moving. it looks like they're subletting space from that video liquidation place.

The place that's been there for years is just downsizing-the new subrenter is just The Anime Store-the guy that runs it is just moving from Hamden to Chambers & Alameda.

I'm not even sure that this "new" store has a business license yet. Looked it up in both Denver and Aurora to see if it was there. Mainly because I check business licenses, when fictitional names expire, et cetra.
Hmm.. Evilish...

Same. Went there today and accidentally bought a DVD that was subbed only. Kind of bummed. Should have looked. Hope they will let me exchange it. :/

if it was sub only, then good chances it was a bootleg. almost all US DVD releases have a dub track on them. if you want to avoid this, not to mention shoddy video/audio quality, only buy the legit DVDs.

o_O I wouldn't say the chances are good because it's a sub only DVD. I mean sure, the chances are there, but aren't there LEGIT distributors who do subbed only DVD? Or there are several series that are available subbed only because they didn't want to bother with dubbing because of money and time issues?

I was thinking the same thing.

There are some legit distributors who will do sub-only releases, but they seem to be the exception, not the rule. I don't want to judge straight off, but here's a couple of indicators of bootleg-ness: See if there are Chinese subtitles as well. Also, type the UPC code into Google and see what comes up, because sometimes bootleggers will recycle UPC codes because barcodes help keep the packaging looking legit.

As Gimme said, there are a few legit U.S. distributors who do sub-only releases (and I have some of these), but they are the exception.  He's also spent years studying the legit and bootleg market, and has a good read on it, so I'll listen to him.  For that matter, perhaps it's time for "Mr. Bootleg Bootcamp" Skrae to chime in with his opinion.

Who's the distributor for this show?  If it's not one of the ones known for doing the occasional sub-only release, that's a sign.

O_o; Kinda the point I'm getting at.  ..Isn't it better to look for ALL the signs of a bootleg ( or at least a few) Before saying "Hmm, subbed only, good chances are you have a bootleg!"  For one thing, we're not even sure what DVD it is, for all we know it could be a release that was a sub only release..

Ooor it could be a bootleg!

Honestly, I feel a little attacked here. . o_O; Ah well no matter.  I'm probably just being overly sensitive to it and over reacting so I'll withdrawal that statement.

Hm, out of curiosity, is the name of the store just "Anime on Chambers" or does it have another name?  Just asking if by some odd miracle I'm ever in Aurora.

No attack was intended. However, the fact AonC/TAS has a history of dealing in bootlegs, coupled with the sub-only nature of the DVD, made some ears perk up. Which is why I made the suggestion to take a look at a few things to find out. Without actually seeing the packaging or anything like that, it's hard to make a judgement, but the facts as we know them, lets up make an educated guess.

Now it's Anime on Chambers. It used to be The Anime Store.

To answer the question of what the anime is, it's Sailor Moon part two. I only found one other on the Internet that was in fact a bootleg. However, they did not look the same and the bootleg had episodes 30 something to 72 while mine has 47-89. And it says that it has 4 all-coded DVD discs versions if that helps. Oh, and there is no UPC code on it. Well, on the box anyways. There is one on the plastic. There looks to be no Chinese characters anywhere. What happens if I did in fact buy a bootleg from them? Do I call the police?

Sounds bootleg to me; legit releases usually aren't all-region, and it really should have a UPC code on the box I think. That sort of stuff is usually on the actual packaging.

A long time ago before I knew what to look for I bought a sub-only Cardcaptor Sakura boxset as a gift, thinking it was legit. Got it home and the legit-looking picture on the website (that supposedly did -not- sell bootleg merch) was different than the product. The quality was ok, like the video was good and the translation was good (as much as I could tell) but the timing was off sometimes and then menus were weird. Also, Chinese subtitles in addition to English. I didn't realize what it was until later when I had learned more about bootleg stuff.

Anyways,  I'd just return it and get your money back. Ask the store to destroy it (though they probably willingly sold it to you).

Breanna: yep, bootleg. the US version of the Sailormoon DVDs have been out of print for about 8 years, and were you to buy a legit one (off amazon, for example), it would prolly run you several hundreds of dollars. japan, to my knowledge, never put out a DVD box set for sailormoon. japanese DVDs typically have, at most, 2, maybe 3, episodes on each, and cost around $40 US (even more now that the yen is so whacky).

that said, this is one of the few times that a company did produce a sub only. ADV didn't have access to the old DIC dubs (remember, the ones that ran on TV? they were _awful_), so they released it sub only. but, there was only the 1 subtitle track in english, and the audio was terrible (mono only).

ALL US DVDs are Region 1 ONLY! ALL JAPANESE DVDs are Region 2 ONLY, and you cannot play them on most DVD players in the US. if you ever encounter a DVD that is all regions, or 0 regions, or region 9, then there's a 98% chance it's a bootleg.
