Moving to Colorado
« on: May 21, 2011, 06:12:07 pm »
Hey everyone.  I currently live in Pittsburgh, PA.  I had a friend who lived in Boulder for a while, and it looked like an awesome place.  I just graduated from college with my BS in Computer Information Systems, and am on the hunt for a job.  I figured that since my lease is ending soon, and I no longer have any major attachments to my hometown, that this would be the perfect opportunity to move.  I think Colorado is a beautiful state, and I've already started looking around for jobs.

I saw a similar thread, but it seemed like the person already knew where they were going etc.  I am wondering where exactly I should move.  I definitely want to be close enough to Denver that I can come to Nan Desu Kan every year.  I'm going to miss all my friends at Tekkoshocon in Pittsburgh so I definitely want to make some new friends and still enjoy anime cons.  So anyway, main topic of the thread...

Is there any places in particular that you guys would recommend?

Where are some areas that meet-ups happen?  I got to be friends with the Con president at Tekkoshocon and joined his Moonlight Ramblers Otaku Club, so it would be cool to go to something similar.

One last random question.  Is there any tokusatsu fans here at Nan Desu Kan?  Most of the staff at Tekko are toku fans so that is how I got to know them so well.  My avatar is related to this.  It's a picture of me in my Kamen Rider Kabuto suit.  If not, I should definitely apply to do an Intro to Tokusatsu panel in the future.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me out!

Lots of CIS jobs around, unfortunately they are usually full! But still, it's a good place to look.

I think almost all of Denver is pretty nice except for Aurora and Thornton. Granted, those two burbs are cheaper to live in, so maybe try it and move up later?

My advice is try to live within 10 minutes of a major highway artery. If you can get to a freeway easily, Denver seems SOOOO much more manageable. Personally, I like Lakewood and Englewood. Lots of amenities.

Here's something to get you started!

Thanks for the info!  I'll check out the video.  I probably should be looking cheaper initially.

*UPDATE*
I laughed when they talked about Boulder in the video.  My friend said he met a lot of strange people while living there.

Please feel free to submit your panel idea I'd love to have it.  I watched a lot of Tokustasu as a kid because I lived in Hawaii till I was 8.

Thanks for the offer.  I actually will be coming with my wife and cats, so we will be looking around for an apartment.  I'll check out the link for the job postings.

That's awesome.  I'll definitely submit for a panel once I am able to land a job.  I am hoping I find something soon, but if I can't find anything within a few months then I might have to hold off until after the new year.  If that is the case then I'll submit it for the next year's con.

Best of luck, to you and your wife, in finding a new life in Colorado!

I've been to Tekko, so I can't help but wonder if we have any mutual friends.  :)  World gets a little smaller, I guess!

I had assumed that Tekko wasn't big enough to have anyone travel that far to come to.  Was there a particular reason that brought you there?  It would be funny if we did know some of the same people.  A majority of the people I know are on staff or volunteer since they are the people who make up the club meetings, but I have met various other people at panels and stuff as well.

Well I'm from Ohio [I'm moving to CO in June], so it wasn't that far of a drive.  It really was just a fun little road trip for my friends and I to do.  I'm sure Tekko has more Ohio visitors than you realize! :)  There were a lot of people I saw there, that I had met at Ohayocon, but the only local I knew was Jason B., who you might know from panels, since he was big into tokusatsu.  He's a pretty nice guy.  ;D

Oh, that makes more sense if you were living in Ohio.  I don't know him very well but I do know who he is.  He definitely seems like a cool guy.

Yeah.  That is one thing I wasn't looking forward to.  I'm hoping that roads are taken care of better there.  Where I live it takes them forever to clear the roads.  I've had plenty of times where I've spun on ice too.  I need a new car, so I'll have to make sure I get something good on the snow regardless.

Ya know, you're from Pennsylvania, I think you'll be just fine. Eastern winters are not as long as ours, but they certainly can be much more severe, especially when you take ice storms into account.

In all honesty, snow on the front range is generally very mild, just be prepared to have it in April!

What Boomerjinks said. Really the worst part of driving in snow around here is all the transplants from non-snowy states that can't drive in snow to save their lives.

A lot of people have been telling me that the roads never get too bad since you guys have the proper equipment and are prepared for the snow.  I was debating on if I should be getting a 4WD car, but I'm sure it's not necessary.

4WD or Front Wheel is pretty awesome. Rear Wheel  may get you into some nasty situations in the snow....actually, you WILL get into some nasty situations in the snow :p

Colorado is a great state most years, hope ya like it. I like areas such as Wheat Ridge, Arvada, or Lakewood - anything West Downtown Denver mostly.

My wife just had a phone interview with a company in Arvada.  The company I've been talking with is in Aurora.  I hope she gets the job.  She said they were going to call her back within a week if they want her to come out for an interview.  I'm just not sure how it's going to go since they didn't give her an instant yes.

I kinda miss having my AE86, that thing was fun in the snow. Lightweight RWD means that you have to kick out the tail to make some turns ;D

Awesome! It's pretty common not to give a yes over the phone, I wouldn't worry about it.

I dunno about that. Denver doesn't get a lot of snow, but when it does... BOOM! So the local governments don't like to keep too much snow removal equipment because it doesn't get used most of the year except for the handful of snowfalls that we get through the year. Mountain towns are a little different, but they are also not that sizeable.

I recommend at least front-wheel drive, and if you insist on an SUV or some other large vehicle, then go for the 4WD. Just remember, 4 Wheel Drive doesn't mean 4 Wheel Stop.

This

I work in a Subaru dealership, and while subarus have one of the best AWD systems out there with great ABS, we still see a ton of curb shots each year from people locking up the wheels and sliding.
