Question about Torso Covering
« on: May 17, 2011, 06:58:12 pm »
Greetings!

I have a small question about your rules on covering your torso, specifically the amount of covered space required. The rules state that "a sports bra's worth" is fine for females, but males require "some sort of shirt or vest". Far be it from me to question the reasons behind the rule, but are those hard-and-fast requirements? I ask because a friend and I are planning on cosplaying as Simon and Kamina, respectively, and seeing as how Kamina is never seen wearing a shirt, the rules for how much exposed skin one can have are important!

Is clothing covering the entire torso required, or will coverage of the, shall we say, erogenous zones sufficient? Our group figured that we could simply move Kamina's abdomen binding up to his upper chest in order to provide a modicum of decency, but we wanted to make sure everything was kosher before we went forward with it.

I appreciate any and all answers anyone can give!

I am also curious about this. If his cape drapes over his shoulders is that enough? (I also have a Kamina coming)

The "pointy bits" must be covered, and just having a loose scarf is iffy...one sharp movement and it's not kosher anymore. ;p  I'd advise a white ace bandage chest wrap, underneath the costume.  Then you'd be safe on all sides of the issue.  Flesh-colored might fly, but I'd run that one by Katie, you have to make sure it is okay under the "no nudity, even the illusion of such" rule. :)

Well, I've seen several male cosplayers at NDK using ace bandage or bandaids to cover pointy bits..  ( <_<; okay are we REALLY not allowed to say the word that's suppose to be used here? *face palm* )

Personally, I think that looks tacky, but I can understand the need to have the "pointy" bits covered.  Perhaps, if it were allowed, one idea would be to use pasties, and then theatrical make-up or even normal make up to blend it into the skin.  After all, I've seen Dante cosplayers and the like, get away with wearing a completly open jacket with just bandaids.   But hey.. who knows?

Also, if you want to use just the scarf to cover up you COULD keep it in place with double sided fashion tape. Only issue is then you can't do heroic scarf flips. :p

Sporkie is correct pointy bits must be covered as well as a little bit more. We've had a LOT of complaints in the past about, oddly enough, guys hanging out on top. Hence the reason for the torso covering rule. Flesh colored shirts would be acceptable in this instance.

Moving the bindings up to cover the upper chest would also be acceptable, it doesn't have to cover the entire torso just the upper part. If you want to use double stick tape to keep the scarf in place that is up to you, however if it comes undone you may be asked to cover up or change. So its really up to you how you cover up the top portion of the torso just make sure it stays for the duration you are in the costume.

The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it.

I'd personally hate to have to extend my friend's bandages to the top of his chest because it would limit the amount of tattoo detailing we could do, not to mention I feel that it would look quite strange :/. Katie, would it be acceptable if we put some sort of covering on his "pointy" bits (as in bandaids, electrical tape, pasties, etc) and the cape draped over his shoulders enough to cover his chest area? (It's one of those that is made to drape over the front so it won't be exposing his chest unless he does the famous "piercing the heavens" pose.) Example is this Kamina that I've seen at NDK before ---> http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs36/i/2008/258/d/7/KAMINA_AND_YOKO_AT_NDK_by_Blynk_the_Eyeless.jpg

I just want to make the costume as accurate as possible ^^

Lightane you can always get a flesh colored shirt and put the tattoo on it, this way he is covered and you loose none of the details.

Bandaids are kinda iffy as they can fall off and don't really cover the chest area (remember my comment about the compaints). That being said you can try this but if for some reason he is exposed, because of posing or failing bandaids, ect. he may be asked to cover up.

You could get a nude color dancewear top and have me airbrush the tattoos on it for you... I do believe that we've talked about this before

Smiley face stickers would be a great solution for covering up pointy bits.

Clarifying, in case my Ax costume (!) gets done by NDK, and it seemed silly to make a new thread to address a similar issue:

A muscle-suit of a male bare chest falls under the definiton of "illusion of nudity", ja? So I'd need to put bandages over it?

The illusion of nudity is really for the entire body. If you're wearing a muscle suit/shirt you'll be fine.

I have that issue as well for my Simon cosplay. Where exactly you get those kind of shirts? and does double sided tape work well?

I figure it's easier to post in here than start a new one - what about Lum from Urusei Yatsura?
