It's a Titan I missile silo complex, about thirty minutes east of Denver. Lowry maintained three complexes in the Denver area (a lot closer to the population than you'd ever imagine), three missiles were stationed at each complex. Whole thing is 50-100 feet underground, most of it is filled with water, the rest is terrifying in different ways!

Oh, and do you ever post anything that isn't completely EPIC?

I try REALLY hard not to.

Are there ghosts in some of the pictures or am I seeing things?

The circles you see in some photos are most definitely ghosts, and certainly not some other form of atmospheric moisture or dust particulate, even though the silos are both filled with water and rotting asbestos powder.

that's pretty epic.

the hubby keeps thinking it would be awsum to live in a converted missile silo. but, umm...rotting asbestos powder, not so much with the asthma-y goodness.

Dude, shouldn't this be on a base?

And is it sad that the first thing that came to mind was epic photoshoot opportunity for Silent Hill Cosplay?

The seventh picture--the one taken of the tunnel--looks like a double exposure or a ghost.
I'm standing behind you.

I think I just found my dream house/ bunker/ vault! Jeez, what a mess. But if I had the money, I'd buy it and pay someone else to shovel out all that drek. So much potential!

The Titan 1 missile system was kind of.... silly. We spent so much time and money on these silos and they were only operational for 3 to 5 years in the early 60s. They were super-inefficient, too. The missiles could not be fired from the silos - rather, the silos housed enormous elevators that raised the missile to the surface. The missiles couldn't be stored fueled, either. They had to be fueled, then raised, then fired. And only one could be fired and guided at a time. So these silos are much more massive than the Minuteman and Peacekeeper silos of the 70s and 80s.

I'm pretty much dying to do a girlbusters photoshoot down there with proper lighting.

I also want to drop a flare down into the water of that silo, but I'm terrified that it's more than just water, and the idea of dying 100 feet underground in a burning silo, well it doesn't exactly get me all kinds of excited.

Those Titan's always seem to have nasty goop in them. Some day I swear I'll get around to getting to one of them before they flood completely!

For the most part silos are kept under lock and key, buried and welded shut. But the Deer Trail silo is pretty accessible - if you can your car parked in a location that won't lead cops or residents to think you're UrbExing nearby, and if you can make it to the silo and down into the pit without your flashlights being seen or without tripping and breaking your ******* leg, you're golden.

So you get there, you get your gloves and coats and stuff, you tell your friends to shut the hell up and watch their lights, and you walk to where one of the underground rooms was excavated because it was leaking something into the ground. Do you see the vertical shaft in the middle of the picture above, that's the service elevator. The big hole is pretty much right next to that. The hole hasn't been filled in, so it's just a matter of walking down this little cliff and entering the metal tunnel that connects to the rest of the complex. You enter right between the elevator and the power house.
