Kaaaay...

How can the ndk game room be better, in your opinion?
It doesn't really help you or ndk to bash and not give any reasoning.
Why is Wasabi's game room better?

I'm not really a gamer but the game room always seems fun.

More does NOT always mean better.  Anyways, I may be wrong on this, but I believe that NDK's stance is they don't focus on the game room that much because they're an anime/Japanese culture convention. NOT a gaming convention.  Of course there are video games that fit into this scope.. but all in all I think they would rather focus on other things.

Which isn't a bad thing persay, and like I mentioned in the beginning, more does not always equal better

Actually a lot of video games in America come from Canada. That's not saying that gaming isn't in Japanese culture, but it's not as big as it is here in America.

Wow, your posts are downright painful to read, no offense.

I never said that gaming wasn't part of Japanese culture, I merely said that NDK is NOT a gaming convention.  We have a gaming room, but it's never been attended to be a huge focus, at least to my understanding.  And if you're talking about games and tying them in with Japanese culture, well then that should only include games that are made in Japan, should it not?

Bottom line: NDK chooses to focus their attention elsewhere, such as the dealers room, panels, guests, and cosplay contests.  There are anime fans who are gamers, but not all gamers are anime fans.  If you're going to Nan Desu Kan solely for the gaming room, well you're probably going to the wrong convention.

The major difference between NDK and Wasabi is that Wasabi uses the Colorado Cutthroat Connection group for their game room (and by uses, *pays* them to come). CCCT has a lot of equipment and is focused on gaming. NDK does its own thing, and its just different, nothing wrong with it.

The major improvement the gaming room could use, as always, is industrial powered portable AC units to dissipate the heat and con funk generated in that tiny room up in the corner. Of course they do have them, but its never quite enough. Keep up the good work, gaming room peeps, your efforts are not futile.

Well, this conversation didn't start off on a constructive note. I'm going to proceed with the assumption that everyone in this thread is well intentioned.

First of all, game selection - we generally have all of the new games, and sometimes more than one copy of them to meet the demand of the con-goers. We also are quite aware that new doesn't mean good, so we keep around the quality games year after year. How do we determine quality? Mainly, the games that put the butts in the seats - if we see at least 4-8 people (depending on the max players simultaneously) playing the game for the full 2 hour time block, the game is likely to get repeated the following year. We also do game request polls yearly to give con-goers input.

Secondly, we're more than open to suggestions to make the game room better! Constructive criticism is something we never turn down, and always appreciate. It will also help if the suggestions have some specificity.

Finally, the majority of the Video Game Room equipment is owned by the VGR staff, not the convention. We beef up saved games, download DLC in advance, and go into each NDK weekend assuming we'll see at least 3 controllers bite the dust. Again, anything you find lacking, feel free to provide some of the above-mentioned Constructive criticism.

The defining factor for me attending NDK would probably be if I can bring my own Gamecube controller for Wii fighting games, and my own fighting stick for PS3 fighting games. You guys seem to be pretty strict about "bringing in hardware" for whatever reason.

The reason the game room doesn't allow outside/personal hardware is because the convention does not want the liability for your equipment.

Though this was a few months back...

As of the last couple of years, there has been a side set-up for fighting games where we have our own sticks that we let others use, but you could bring in your own controller/stick/what-not for your use.  It's not a planned organization and IS -NOT- IN ANY WAY AFFILIATED WITH NAN DESU KAN OR ANY OF IT'S PARTNERS[/b][/u] (lol disclaimer) but I assume if it's two years running with pretty solid popularity, then I'm sure it'll be there this year.  Also, since it's a free set up, there's no liabilities;  keep your eye on your own shiznoe and you'll be good.

Last year had Smash Melee and BlazBlue mainly.  I'm going to assume this year will be Melee, MvC3 and some Blaz.

On a comparative subject that wasn't approached too well it seems with this thread: The Wasabi vs the NDK game room.  To be fair, Wasabi's game room is completely run by the gaming organization Colorado Cutthroat.  Theirs (Wasabi) is 24-hour AFAIK, they run tournaments with a national professional rule-set, you can bring your own equipment and if not, borrow equipment with use of ID/Wallet/Car Keys/etc., (surprisingly good) prizes for placing in tournaments, a large variety of games with mutli-station emphasis on popular games (3 MvC3 set ups, two 4-TV sets of Halo 3, etc.), and sliiightly more room.

I think they need to have cool down periods like NDK, cause it gets crowded and stupidly hot with all the systems running, but otherwise Wasabi has NDK beat due to the for-gamers, by-gamers set-up.

I'd say it's comparing apples and oranges for tasting like an orange.  NDK focuses elsewhere while Wasabi has a separate group focusing on the video game parts of the convention.  Comparatively, NDK's room is less than stellar compared to Wasabi, by quite a bit IMO.  Still, not exactly enough to keep me out for a whole weekend.  And with the people bringing their own TVs and systems on the side to play (it's been down the hall from the video game room,) I'd still say it'd be good to attend if for that.
