Amenities around the convention
« on: January 22, 2007, 05:08:06 pm »
I want to put together a good page for the local eateries and supply places around the convention, and your help is appreciated. Just reply to this thread with your suggestions. It would be especially helpful if you get me the following bits of information:

  • Please keep the locations within a reasonable distance from the venue convention. A short drive is fine.
  • At minimum give a name and address, but also try to include a phone number and web address if possible. Basically anything that would be handy in helping people find and contact the places.
  • If you have an opinion of the place, feel free to give it.

Excellent thread idea. And for extra brownie points, hours of operation would be fantastic. A lot of people are up pretty late, so it would be good to know what's available in the wee hours.

Alas, I have no recommendations to give. I'm terrible at searching out new places in my car, and I have yet to venture anywhere by that local Wendy's for food.

But Windows Live Local points to quite a few near-by eateries. Looks like there's a Qdoba, Golden Corral, Il Fornaio, Chipotle, Taco Bell, McDonald's, Country Kitchen, Rumbi Island Grill, Wahoo Fish Taco, Panera Bread, Illegal Pete's, Red Robin, Quiznos, Subway, Tokyo Joe's, Domino's, and Wendy's (and a good 50 other restaurants) in a one-mile radius. It's amazing how dense the restaurants are in that area (and how dense I must be to miss them all).

I think I'll print these things out and get a little variety at the con. :)

(Sorry for not posting specifics on these places. Give me a little time and I'll put together something more useful than a list of names.)

I know. I will be doing that within the next week. I am just hoping others will do the work for me or know more about the places. It will be great if they have a review to give.

It may have been put in the basement. I am trying to start out fresh since I don't know if anything has closed or is different from last year.

Here is the map of the local restrants around that area.

This map shows all resterants, separated by cuisine, within about a mile of the hotel.

I hate to be a party pooper, but if you do want to give a review of an establishment, please list the information for the place. The intention is for this to be a reference for people.

Good Idea!

Well, it has sort of become a tradition that I go out to dinner with whoever is going with me, and we always go to this Chinese Buffet. I used DJ Bullock's link and (I think) I found the place! If I remember, it is called "Mr Panda". It is a 10-15 minute drive to get there, But to me it is worth it! It is a buffet full of yummy treats, and the people there have always been nice to my friends and I. They always make sure we are having a good time, and they always seem to be interested in our costumes, and they helpsed us pronounce the chinese on our cookie sheets.
So, yeah. It is not the best place for fast food, but If you need a rest, i recommend it!

Hmm... I was hoping this list would be a little further developed by now. Perhaps I can be of some help though because I think we really need it. Only things I remember off the top of my head are Wendy's and this Mexican restaurant we went to last year. I'm specifically looking for anything within walking distance for my friends and I. Let me take a look at some online map things...

Ok, here we go this is the URL in case anyone wants to see: Restaurants near NDK

Ah so everything I think you'll really need is right there. And since the topic starter asked for it, I'll give you my opinion on Garcia's Mexican Restaurant. From what I remember, I thought it was really good. It was a neat place and our dining experience was great. I couldn't tell you anything about the price though since I don't recall but it's the absolute closest place to the Tech Center: right across the street. Definitely was worth going there so I'd recommend it. So there ya go! I hope this helps you.

One word: Garcia's (5050 S. Syracuse, right up the street from the Marriott, 303-779-4177). They're a great Mexican restaurant. I live in Littleton, and I'll make the trip down there every couple of months, it's so good. My friends and I have made it a tradition to eat there the night before the con officially starts. They're reasonably priced, serve bottomless chips and salsa and they're a 5 minute walk from the hotel. I highly recommend the chicken fajitas, followed by their excellent sopapillas for dessert.  ;D

Funny, completely random story about Garcia's...so, the first (and only) time I went was during NDK 2006. It was fairly early in the morning so there were alot of people who looked tired. There was one guy, on the other side of the room, who was dressed in his cosplay of Ryuk (from Death Note). One of the waitresses was semi-new and had no clue about the convention taking place across the street. She was scared to death of Ryuk and refused to come out of the kitchen after seeing him and claiming he was a "diablo". It took awhile before they got her to come out again, and she talked to the Ryuk and was all better a little while later...until someone came in dressed as Curse-mark Sasuke, who was apparently just as scary to her. We felt bad, because we highly doubted she was going to keep working there, and she seemed no older than 16 or so. Anyway, long story short: waitresses at restraunts who are unfimiliar with the concept of NDK and anime tend to be a little freaked out when you come in with your creepier cosplay outfits. Just a fair warning to all you demons, zombies, death gods, and creepy-ass ninjas.
