Hey guys! I am currently working on an article for COAR, but I need to research a little. So I decided to turn to all of you. Lets start a thread here, What are some of the things that your parents do that annoy you and are related to your otakuism?

I'll start off with my ten.
1. Constantly ask questions when I am watching anime.
2. Ask if every school girl in an anime is Sailor Moon.
3. Bug me about my anime posters.
4. Add their own "Voice over" to the anime I am watching... never related at all... to any thing.
5. Tell me, "Stop watching those Cartoons."
6. Ask what "those Backwards Chinese books" are.
7. Tell me I am not going to get a good job from cartoons.
8. After I correct them a million times that it is anime and explain the difference, still call it cartoons.
9. Constantly ask me about the same things from only Sailor Moon and Pokemon...
10. tell me anime is just a phase.

My parents don't even bother a/o care so .....yeah :/

I suppose that could be translated as annoying in a way

11. ask me when i'll grow out of it (my mother asked me this when i was in my mid-20s, when i was i law school =P)
12. tell me it's racist. my mother also thought kung fu films were racist. on the other hand, she told me that i should have been better at math, cos all asians are genetically better at math than white ppl, and white ppl are just genetically better at art than asians.

13. Tell me I need to "get out and meet new people"; despite the fact that I meet plenty of people at cosplay meet-ups and conventions. I'm just not meeting the people they want me to meet. >>

14. Ask unrelated questions, and superimpose their own "intelligence" on the subject.
15. Think it's all demonic or hentai.
16. Not even vague interest in when I explain anime and manga, even if they ask.

17. attempt to hide your sewing supplies to prevent you from working on a cosplay (my mother does that and she hides my plans)
18. attempt to tell you conventions are ruining your life and your social skills (um.....if it weren't for the conventions, I would have none, or even the meetups count for social encounters)
19. Make rude jokes about how I'm wearing costumes not on Halloween
20. Completely ignore the fact it makes you happy
21. Think its cartoons like Bugs Bunny, when you attempt to explain the artistic reasoning for liking it (my mother still thinks that animation can't be artistic)

New list from living withe my fiance's mother.
22. Making the assumption that anime is just for rich people (the guy that my fiance's mother is dating is often saying that)
23. Putting down furries and cosplayers (again his thing)
24. Right in the middle of an anime, flipping the channel to football...then getting yelled at by three people in the house watching it. (This happened three times)
25. Assuming since they don't know Japanese, that its cussing

26. Assume all anime = drawn things = cartoons = infantile (wrong at every stage of the assumption, can sometimes be cured by careful application of Ghost in the Shell)

27. Talk over it, since they can't understand the words (I can, and arrrrgh trying to practice understanding spoken Japanese when someone's speaking my native language over it)

28. Make fun of the "picture writing" (kanji)

29. Grab your plushies and try washing them.... and drying them.... (Holds her Kirara plushy doll almost crying since she is all messed up. But yay for friends that can fix her. )

30. Go into your room and start grabbing stuff and throwing it away. (It will be alright posters, My first ever Mangas "Flame of Recca" and "Chobits" Ill get the white out out and get the stains out.)

31. Take the lock off your room when you lock it when you are out so they can't go in there.

32. Tell you to find new interests.

33. Have a double standard for the oldest child and let her be cyber goth completely and dress tht way then yell at me when I wear a Cosplay that covers me fully, (except head.)

34. Completely ignore any sort of reasoning for why anime and being Otaku is good for a person.

and My last in this rant add in 35. Take no responsibility nor care for why your relationship with your parents has been shattered and you start avoiding them to live the life you love and that makes you happy.

Apparently my parents are cool. They would watch it with me when I was still living at home. My dad has the entire FMA series and a few other movies and mangas here and there

My mother used to do that, until i actually told her what one of the katakana meant, lol....Baka (I was actually cursing in Japanese at my mother too for that) she had no idea. My sister actually asked and joined in on the teasing

Yeah my folks are also cool, my dad watched” Fullmetal Alchemist” and “Ghost in a Shell Stand Alone Complex” with me.

My mom won’t watch anime series with me, but she likes to watch Hayao Miyazaki films; she is also quite interested in steam punk, and she has some steam punk jewelry and was wearing some Victorian type clothing the other day, Id say she pulls off steam punk quite well.

I know that was not on topic; but if someone wanted to change the title and first post to include positive aspect of how parents react to anime, it may make for good research for a magazine article on how children and parents react to anime.

Don’t forget that some people here like Ronin and some NDK Staff members are parents, and it can be assumed since they participate in an anime related community that they are parents who embrace anime not criticize anime.

Although maybe a new topic should be started that includes a discussion of how children and parents react to anime, not just a list of annoyance caused by parents critical reaction to anime

35. Actually run off friends who are into anime stating they are not real friends (My mother did that to half my anime club at a birthday party no less)

36. Banned ALL anime or related items from the house.

My parents did this when my older sister and I first got into anime. Then when Pokemon came out and my little sister started watching it; it SLOWLY became OK. (Mind you that was almost 10 years ago.)

37. Forcing you to attend BORING political junk saying that Anime fans don't vote and aren't active in the political parties (Ummm....hello Obama Ninja from 2008), my mother is very politically active. She was pissed that I wasn't doing my patriotic duty of trying to um...register anime fans to vote, its kind of hard when you know that everyone is younger than the age required to vote

38. Parents that say anime and manga is fine, but think that it's taking over your life, and say that you should be more responsible on life, and they just don't see it.

39. Constantly tell you that they are going to get you wireless internet so you can take your anime to a place away from the rest of the house and out of the way then constantly make you wait and wait and wait.

40. Think that any anime that has to do with ghosts or spirits(ex. Spirited Away) is bad.
I almost didn't start watching anime for this very reason(I am the good child in the house.) But once my sister started to watch anime, I got into it and finally watched Spirited Away. (at this time, I was trying to be rebellious, lol that failed)

Most of my major issues have already been talked about.. but ive worked on mom for a while it has kind of become okay... KIND OF... My mom's a baptist from the bible belt.. and lets just say that at 21 it hasn't gotten any easier. But I found a new one.

41. Offering to help you with a cosplay, then, at the last moment re deciding its bad and screwing you over.
