Thanks for this!
I have questions regarding the themes of the artwork in the show.
I recall at one time the rules stated that artwork displayed should be related to anime/manga/Japan in some way or another, yet I saw so many extremely random things in the show this year. Not that it's not art or it's bad or anything like that but is this theme rule enforced or what? Is it because all the space hadn't been used that other things were allowed to be displayed?
It's just weird to me to go to an anime convention art show and see photographs of nature or expressionist paintings...

As far as I am aware, the art show has always accepted different genres of art.  The ones listed in the rules are sci-fi, fantasy, and anime.  At no time have we excluded a genre that did not apply.  I think that the art show has morphed into a place for artists to show their work no matter the purpose of the convention.

If you look at the convention itself, not all activities relate to anime - there were panels on internet memes and webcomics and fiction.  We have live gaming and rock band tournaments.

I guess the bottom line is that I would rather have a variation of art that may or may not be anime related and have a full show instead of limiting it to only certain genres and seeing blank spaces where art might have been.

Since this was brought to my attention I will go ahead and revise the art show rules so that there is no limit to what will be accepted except for content itself - whether or not a piece is appropriate to be viewed in a pg-13 art show.

Personaly i enjoy seeing the different types of art. There have been several artist that take a popular cartoon or movie and draw the characters anime style as well. It inspired me to do the same and I may end up submitting something like that next year.  ;D
Don't diss the mouse! He may look like a pipsqueek but he does carry a keyblade and who knows, he may have Maleficent at his beck and call.

Thanks for the info Bamani!!

Sorry if I seemed to be complaining! LOL I was genuinely just curious. It does still seem a bit weird to me, but I appreciate that artists of all kinds and show off their creations. =3

I've noticed that several artists have changed their styles over the last few years.  Many of the artists who started out with fan art or art heavily influenced by anime have evolved into something different - not quite anime related anymore.  I can think of one artist specifically who started out with anime babes and this year submitted some incredible water colors that weren't anime themed at all.

It makes it hard to judge the contest though - our categories have been the same for years and they don't really match the art we're getting anymore.  That might be another thing to overhaul...
