peace bonding is pretty much a contract for any prop where you agree to not go flailing around with your props frantically, shoot nerf guns at people randomly-which I did take my nerf darts out just in case, you'll respect the space around you, often times I bet some items just aren't classified as 'con-safe' at all, so it's also best to check with OPs on something if you're not sure if you should even be carrying such things around etc etc etc...

ok this did not happen at NDK, but at Anime Banzai 2009, my group and I were in the green room and for our performance we had a curtian we made and have used in several skits. It is made of sheets and pvc pipes... we were in the green room we had our curtain disassembled and down along a wall were it wouldnt hurt anyone and no one would trip on it and a staff member comes in and completely flips out and makes us run all the pieces of our curtain to ops to have it peace bonded.  I can understand if it was something we were carrying around the con, but it went from the hotel room to green room and was only used for the skit.  We freaked out cause as soon as we were told we had to peace bond it immediately they started lining the contestents up to go onstage.

Well, they probably considered you... "Armed"... :hears crickets: Nobody appreciates puns. Anyway, next year, for my Captain Gordon: Defender of Earth cosplay, I may have to get the prop gun peace-bonded.

I'm going to put my Staff hat on for a second: As Security, if I see someone doing something they shouldn't with a peacebound prop, I know you know better, and you may receive a badge punch.  If there is no peacebinding, then you will be escorted to Ops ASAP.  Remember, your safety is my priority #1 at all times.  You may have seen me at all hours of the convention each and every weekend, like some sleepless juggernaut of yelling power (I am careful to be nice though :) and it's because I don't want any of you hurt at the con.

Now for the funny bit...I peace-tied one of our more experienced medic staff this con.  She's a very dangerous individual!  ;D

If there were a place to put a zip-tie on our wits, I'm sure we'd all have to check in at ops when we got to the convention.

Kaeru, I do recall watching Ops peace bond one of the Aurora Medical Team's surgical scissors.  I thought it was hilarious.

All humor aside, though, anything that can be utilized as a weapon and reasonably employed as such (like a severed arm, inflatable bat, and the less-than-obvious 6-foot long buster sword  :P, to mention a few ) may be considered something worth peace bonding.  In the end, the choice fully belongs to the Operations Room.  The inconvenience to stop at Ops is not so diminishing as to allow someone to carry a pseudo-weapon without it at least being checked.  It might be you that is the target of said device, and who knows what it may be constructed of.  Safety is the single-most important reason for peace bonding.

I simply ask, is it worth not looking at, at least once?

Just out of curiosity

(As the Logistics rep who hangs out most often in the Con Operations Office, let me say:)

How you dress with a prop is less important than how you ACT with that prop.

The idea of peace bonding isnt about the weapon or prop you carry, its about the
agreement between you and the convention to abide by an acceptable standard of
behaviour while carrying that weapon or prop around other attendees. .

Basically we are asking you to set a good example for other people in how you use
your prop and be aware that others may take your actions more seriously than you
mean them if you are not careful.

In return we "mark" your prop to show that we have seen it and find it acceptable
to display during the convention without causing a serious disturbance for other people.
(Plus, the Ops personell dont get out to see a lot of the con, so its really cool when
people come by to show off their costumes and props).

In your case daikarasu, if the sign is on a pole of some sort, we would ask that you have the
pole itself peace bonded, and also mention that signs are also restricted unless they are specific
to the character or appearance of the costume.   I would personally love to see a peace bond on
that, again because it sets a good example for others.
(And you could also go down the halls saying "Love and Peace-Bonding!" to other attendees
- we haven't had anyone doing that in a long time).
Not that I agree with this, but:

That was my fault.  It was a little bit of hazing on my part of the AMT Youth Members, because I'm a bad bad man.

Honestly I thought the reason Ops peacebonded so many things was because of this scenario..

NDKer #1: Oh god! Can you believe they peace-bonded my prop sword?? Geez! You know, that prop chair could be a weapon too!

Ops: .. Fine.. we'll do the chair too!

NDKer #2:  My chair!  You know, if thrown hard enough, that spoon could be a weapon!

Ops: OH FOR THE LOVE OF..! Jim! Get me another zip-tie..!

NDKer #3: ..............why are they peace binding my plushie?  o3o;

Let's see my plastic bat got peace tied, lol...not like it was going to be used anyway....lol....my umberalla for Rip van Winkle! Didn't want to deal with getting musket peace tied, so I didn't even bring it. My wooden boken for my Rukia cosplay and someone suggested I get Kon peace tied too.
