Yes, I take pictures of people with a little red "squid" named Squishy. Squishy is a bit of a long standing tradition with the website and showed up as a fixture of the site back in about 1998. We did picture comics of him with captions on it in l33t and sent him on nonsensical adventures where he met mysterious things. He started going to conventions in 2001.
A few things to know about Squishy.
1. Squishy has nothing to do with Prairie Squid, Tentacle Hentai, or anything perverted. Squishy has no political, or religious agenda. The intent of Squishy is to be cute, and viral. I don't mind if you take a picture of Squishy too. Think of Squishy as being the same as Key: The Metal Idol. The more friends Squishy has met and made happy, the more "real" Squishy becomes.
2. As a rule, I will ask for your permission to take a picture, I will show you the picture, get your approval on it, and thank you. If you ask me where the picture can be found, then I will write it down or give you a business card. Squishy don't roll illegitimate. Squishy and his camera crew roll legit with the ASAT rule. ASK, SHOW, APPROVE, THANK. If there is a NO in the Ask or Approve phase of that, the picture gets deleted or never taken.
3. Squishy is probably a squid. He could also be an Octorock, a Pentapus, an Old One, a Chaos Beast, a Mindflayer, a baby Octillary, or whatever manner of stuff.
4. Squishy is Chaotic Neutral. When Squishy appears, the group must pick a player to face Squishy. The DM rolls a D20 and the player rolls a D6. If Squishy has a higher number, everyone gets a free Potion or other Healing Item, and Squishy leaves. If your number is higher than the Squishy Roll... then the rolling player has their Health reduced by 95% and everyone else in their group gets their Health reduced by 75%.
5. Fan Art of Squishy is loved and appreciated.
A little strange, yes. I loved all of the cosplay this year at NDK and I look forward to seeing what kind of awesome costumes, events, guests, and general attendees will be at NDK 2011.
