speakers?
« on: September 09, 2010, 01:08:05 am »
ok this is not going to happen 2010 but possibly 2011, but anyways I am just curious about rules for portable speakers, I have been unable to find any rules that restrict them  however I wish to be courteous to others and though I might as well ask, I am planning on building a backpack- sized speaker system for next years ndk, my questions are
1.  is there any restrictions on volume?(and if so how would these be enforced/measured)
2.  any song restrictions(perhaps a limit on how long at a time you can be playing music?)
3.  would any of these restriction be lifted if I were to go outside of the hotel on the lawn?

my plan for the backpack would depend on these things although if there are no restrictions on volume outside it should be totaling out at about 1000 watts of peak power(most portables are  0.5-4 watts)

This topic has been addressed on the boards here.  Feel free to ask any questions you have regarding the policy.  You'll probably get answers to any more questions regarding the policy after this weekend when everyone gets back from con.

thanks for the link, looks like it would not be the most welcome thing at ndk so I will not plan on bringing it if I do decide to make it.

1000 watts would be completely unnecessary no matter what you intended to do.

I am aware of the ridiculous volume that such a thing would create, and if I do make it I do intend on wearing ear protection, I just often find myself with a large group (30+) of people that are trying to listen to some rave music off of some dinky little portable speaker, and as long as I am doing something slightly extreme I might as well go all the way.  I have found the amp necessary for roughly 20 dollars and it would have 1 10 inch woofer, 2 6.5 inch midrange, and a pair of tweeters built into a backpack, using a custom 4s lithium pack for a battery. I was thinking a 500 watt sub, 200 watt midrange

My bass amp was able to fill a small venue pumping out 75 watts at 8 ohms into one dinky 15". You're looking at about 200watts max for any type of "mini" rave type thing. MAYBE 300-350 if there's a thunder storm going on outside.

All music must be at a reasonable volume and must be appropriate and played in unconfined spaces.  What you are describing, wizard0ne0, does not fit within that.  If you would need to wear any hearing protection at all for yourself, then no.
