The biggest thing to remember is that the wind can change even from minute to minute. When I drove down into Boulder for work this morning, I could for the first time smell the smoke all the way from Longmont, and the smoke was heavy in central Boulder. A couple of hours later, the smell had subsided considerably (at least at ground level) and visibility was more or less normal. Before the rain set in, the wind changed again and the smoke started blowing into Boulder once more.
If you're sensitive to smoke for any reason, it might be a good idea to pack along a good-quality mask (two or three if they're disposable), just as a precaution. I can say from prior experience that in heavy smoke, some will get into the hotel especially near the entrances, but the filters in the A/C can help a lot.
