Well honestly haven't been able to buy much new stuff, so kinda hard to say.  I would guess Soul Eater.  Just watched the first half of season 1 and am loving it.

Soul Eater was fun. My avatar is a joke of it. SE+Pokemon Black and white newest starting pokemon.

I just always go to NDK and hear of the animes i missed during the year. But this year i plan to actually write down some of these. I have missed so many animes people have recommended cause i forgot by the end of the con

When I was at Anime Boston earlier this year, they were Soul Eater, Hetalia, and then the ones that are always super big like Naruto, One Piece, etc.

I was surprised to see a lot of old school ones too, though, like Rayearth and Fushigi Yuugi.

I wonder how much it will change regionally... :)

By this do you mean stuff big in The US or Japan? As far as Japan goes. Angel Beats, Durarara!, & Bakemonogatari were big in the Spring Season. Not sure what is big in the Summer season.

Well, at least in my opinion the journey can be just as much fun as the destination.  I think that resembles a quote from someone who's probably smarter than I am.

Anyway, I wouldn't let cosplaying ruin anime for you.  Just because you know a character is say, going to die, doesn't mean you know how or how the other characters react, etc.  The whole development of characters and plot in my mind are important.  Just saying.  I mean specifically I read ahead about Naruto from wikipedia because I just wanted to know once Shippuden started since it'd been forever.  Doesn't spoil watching the episodes for me, I like seeing how things develop and I enjoy the characters and world.

But anyway, I was getting off topic so sorry.  Another suggestion which may help you, and kinda forgot about it before, you can go onto anime fan websites or whatever and find top 10 polls.  That would give you some suggestions.  I always enjoyed, though not necessarily agreed, with the ones in Newtype while it still ran in the US.  Ha, now my post isn't entirely off topic, yay! haha

If you're looking for anime that has come out in recent seasons, a few great ones are Angel Beats!, B Gata H Kei, and Working, all from last season. A good looking one from this year is Mitsudomoe, if you like that kind of anime I guess. But yeah, watch Angel Beats!, it makes grown men cry. ;A;

It's a happy anime but when you find out backstorys well they can be pretty depressing.

What ^ said. It's so amazing. My little 8 year old brother was begging me to let him watch it for awhile so after awhile I let him. After the last episode he was hugging me, his head against my chest, crying saying, "it's sooo saaaadd," between his tears and shortly after, "but sooo goooood ;-;" I was crying too even though it was the second watch through.

LOL...the kid I used to baby sit when she was little begged me to let her watch some anime too, but I told her until she is thirteen, there was just no way I would allow it. So yeah, I know the feeling.

High of the Dead is so close to being a big one, I would like to see more of it, I'm only up to episode 10. Also I would say, Polyphonica, it is just so pretty and the artwork is amazing, you should see the story. I would think it should be big.

Aside from Soul Eater and Axis Power Hetalia, I really like Baccano! and there's alway FMA: Brotherhood, that Ducky: Decoded show that was being advertised at NDK looks pretty cool as well (but I suppose that'll be for 2011)

I supposed a while ago that the reasoning behind this is because of the superior lack of cool shows coming out for the better half of a year now. Sure there's some like Soul Eater, Hetalia- though i dont know why-  and CorpsePrincess, but those are very far and few between. Since there isn't truly that many shows being brought over as much, and the cost of dvds sets aren't really going down that much, some people have started going back and reflecting on 'olders shows' and remembering the good ol' days and some of the younger folk wanna see what the all the nostalgic fuss is about :P

It's a cool reflective period of anime days ahead ^^

hmmmm...this is a generally tough questions to answer, because it is all specifics

If we are talking about popular stuff in Japan from last season(Summer 2010):  I personally liked/like Shiki, Moyashimon, Mitsudomoe, Asobi ni Ikuyo: Bombshells in the Sky, Yumeiro Patissiere(continuing on from previous seasons), and Kaasan Mom's Life(Continuing on from previous seasons), from what I have read Occult Academy is good, and Heroman is good if you like super hero stories, and Uraboku(continued from the spring season) is good if you like a more gothic anime, with some implied BL fluff.

If you are talking about what sold at NDK:  FUNimation did sell all 100 copies of Hetalia, probably because they sold it and Shikabane Hime before their release date, I am sure a lot of people picked up Haruhi season 2 from the only vendor at the con selling it, though FUNimation did have a lot of great series that I think sold out its really hard to say, I think Eden of the East would have sold too, but alas the release date got pushed back.

Going by what the cosplayers were at NDK:  Well its nice to see some diversity, there were a lot of Pokemon (I cant wait for Pokemon Black and White),  Hetalia had its big thing, and was a nice Soul Eater crowd too, FFXIII from what I saw was popular, and probably a ton more that I might have missed.

Things that sell in America, in General:  That is something only the big companies could see, and even then, I dont think they could predict what is 'popular' only what sells enough, it would take months of research to find out what is 'popular' as well as comparing what is 'popular' from one company to another.

What is popular in America, based on Cosplay:  I have no idea, I think if you look at the grand scope of things, you would see too much flux in the data, because each place is different, and it all boils down to a matter of personal taste, though from what I have seen from cons around the country, I would have to say, Pokemon and Hetalia would be the two biggest things, but I dont know much, only what I see.

What sells in Japan:  I haven't the slightest clue on this, I am learning, but the whole anime distribution thing, is very different in Japan than it is here.  First you dont have to worry about licensing and all that.  Second the Japanese can sell things more expensively than they do here, if you think $50 for 13 episodes is expensive try $~60-$70 for 4 episodes, though I think they are getting slightly better it definitely isn't to the point that it is here.

What people are cosplaying as in Japan:  I honestly dont know this one either, there are two big reasons why I dont.  First when you look at people cosplaying in Japan, its usually in Akihabara not at an anime convention, and they are doing it for a job of some sort.  Second, Japan has more anime then we will ever, sure we can license every new anime for the upcoming seasons, but really if you think about it Japan has had over 50 years immersed in this stuff, while we have only some what, sure we both got Astro Boy, but what about all the other animes that we didnt get over the past 50 years, so if there is a popularity resurgence, and someone cosplays and that older series that is popular now, I might not know it.
