Cosplayer Star Power- MAKE UP!! (Hints, tips, and ramblings
« on: September 02, 2010, 08:25:43 pm »
First off, feel free to shoot me for the cheesy title!

Alright, so we have several threads on cosplay, cosplay care, and a thread on wigs.  So how about a thread on another big part of cosplay..Make-up!

What brands do you find best for photoshoots? Do you have tips on doing more outlandish theatrical make up?  If someone wants to cosplay Yuki Cross from Vampire Knight, what would you recommend?

Share your thoughts, your hints, and your tips!

My own!

1. Use foundation with low or NO SPF.  Why?  SPF in foundation reflects light.  Meaning that while it will look great in person, it will make you look washed out in photographs.

2. Guys, don't be afraid of wearing make-up! Now I'm not saying you have to wear lipstick and eyeliner (Unless you want too of course!) But a basic thing like foundation can really bring your cosplay together.   If you feel odd buying Revlon or Maybelline at your local store, you can always go for theatrical brand cosmetics, such as Ben Nye.

I like clinique for cover up and jet black mascara in water proof! I also really like rose colored blush from cover girl! I find that depending on the cosplay with make-up less is more! Always always always apply atleast some foundation!

1) If you use the heavier stuff like Ben Nye, remember to add contours back to your face! It makes you look flat otherwise because it's so thick and eats all your shadows.

2) Know your basic light and shadows. They can make you look younger or older (perhaps for the worse)

A dab of white at the inside corner of your eyes can help make them look larger -- or at least less squinty.  Similarly, hitting just under the brow with a lighter eyeshadow will open your eyes up a little.

Fake eyelashes look better in photos 100% of the time.  They can be hard to put on and for the first 15 minutes they feel like you glued weights to your eyes, but after that you generally forget about them.  And they aren't very expensive and are generally reusable.

Gel liner is the best for your top lid, but the closer you get it to your lash line, the better it looks.
There's also a technique called "tight lining", which is applying eyeliner to your waterline instead of your lash line. So, inside of your eyelashes on that little shelf of skin. I think using that on the bottom, instead of lining your eyelashes, usually eliminates the Egyptian thick line look. It also makes your eyes appear wider if you do it on the top waterline too. A pencil eyeliner works best for tight lining :] Practice makes perfect.

edit: Also if you do tightline, don't pull your eyelid up or down, just run the pencil along it. Tugging on your eye like that promotes premature wrinkling!

My ramblings of makeup:

~Always start with a clean canvas! If you have dead skin, or dry skin, the foundation *will* show that. Use a scrub, a wash AND a moisturizer (if not two) before putting any foundation on.
~If you want your eyes to look a little larger, run white eyeliner over the waterline. Then, place the eyeliner under the waterline. Your eyes will pop in photos.
~Even if your character looks natural (not bright eyeliner, etc), you should still put some makeup on. Even if it's just some pink eyeshadow and nude lipstick. Just a little bit will make you look better in photos.
~Take a few test photos! Move into different lightings and take pictures. It'll help you see where dark spots are or where the makeup is off.
~Carry a bit of powder and a mirror in your purse. It's always better to check your makeup often then never check and realize that night your makeup is smudged or removed.

If you want to know how to make your eyes look anime-ish then check out Michelle Phan on youtube. Here's a link to her anime eyes makeup tutorial.

She has special tutorials for Sailor Moon, Nana, and Rozen Maiden, too.

I've not put them on often, but I've found that two things help.  One, get lash glue that shifts color from clear to darker as it dries, it makes it easier to tell when to start applying the lashes.  Second, if you get the full run of lashes cut them half before attempting to apply them; better yet get the ones that are lots of pairs of lashes rather than one long lash.  As for where to get them, I have seem them at dollar stores, Sally's, even Macy's and other places.  Also, you can cut lashes down if you don't want them as full/long, it's not going to damage them in the least.
~I've gone to look for myself, if I should return before I get back keep me here.~

I buy mine from Target and Walmart. They look a lot bigger on the plastic card then they will on your eyes, since they curve upwards. But you can also get much less dramatic ones there too! I know you can find them at Sally's Beauty Supply as well, but they tend to be the same lashes they sell at the super stores and they're more expensive.
Put on all your makeup before you apply your lashes, otherwise they might come off from the powders, or get sloppy.
I usually only trim mine to fit my eyes, because I find it difficult to apply in sections. My favorite lash glue is Lash Grip, you run it across the lash line on the false eyelashes, don't glob it on, but don't skimp either. Blow on them for 10 seconds, and press them on from one edge to the other, holding it down on both ends (while your eye is close of course!) for at least 30 seconds.
It really helps if you're able to wink, if not, I'd probably get someone else to help you, just because it's ridiculously difficult to apply them if your eye is open.
After you apply them, use an eyelash curler to smoosh your natural lashes in with the falsies. Then run mascara over them to help them blend.

When you take them off, use makeup remover or baby oil, don't damage your skin by pulling them off (No matter how satisfying it is!)

A few friends I know use tweezers to press them on, but I've never had luck with it.
Practice makes perfect, and I hope it helps.

If one has dark eyelashes and can find a shade to match in falsies, is mascara still advised? Or would that be overkill?

I have red bumps on my arms and stretch marks, so I was wondering if there is a foundation/cover up that can really reduce their appearance.

Thanks for your help!

As far as the red bumps, it REALLY depends on the cause of them, as foundation could irritate them more.  Do you know what they are? Rosacea or ingrown hairs?  If it's the later.. exfoliate, exfoliate~!  As far as stretch marks go, you probably could use foundation to cover them up.  Another option is to use sunless tanning products (lotions and what not) to minimize there appearance.

It all depends on the look your going for. You never want too much, because that ends up looking goopy and overdone. With every character my makeup is different. Keep it simple. A little can go a long way.

OKAY! So, big question.

I have a tattoo. I'm a nerd and got a nerdy tattoo, however for a cosplay I have, I'm pretty much 100% positive that this character doesn't have this tattoo on her leg. What's the best technique for covering them?
