Too early to start talking about this? I think not!!
« on: September 01, 2010, 11:29:24 am »
So, has anyone started on their plans for the New Years Ball?
Any hopes for the last night of 2010?  Plan to wow the crowd with an elegant ballgown rendition of your favorite character?

We know it's happening since tickets are a prize for the Atrium contest, so let's start talking!

Hmm, had something rather unimportant to say here....was about to feed a troll of discussion as it were, and decided against it.

You really love your America, huh?  But that sounds epic.  Patriotic and classy ftw

I am a little surprised by how soon a thread like this surfaced.  We were planning to start the info stream on NDK NYE after NDK.  Since this has come up, please let me interject a brief run down.

NDK NYE 2009 was an inaugural year. Overall, we were pleased with how well a lot of it went, but we also see there was room for improvement.  We understand the frustration on the dress code.  This event was designed and intended from the beginning to be at a MINIMUM a semi-formal event.  Since then, we've learned a lot about what people consider 'costumes' and 'dressed up'.  Our expectations and attendee expectations were clearly not met.  Needless to say, we will be much clearer on the code, and enforcing it strictly this year.

We will have much more to say about NDK NYE after NDK is over.  All NDK staff are focused on the convention right now, and we won't resume NYE planning until NDK is over.  That being said... feel free to let us know your wishes for this event.  It's new, and shiny, and growing, and we want it to become what our attendees want.  Just understand that not every wish can be granted- there are always those pesky budget and contract restrictions.  But please don't let that stop you from making suggestions.

We will also start an official NDK NYE2 thread sometime after NDK ends.  When you arrive at the convention, pay attention to the program guide, and your goodie bag.  A pre-reg form for NDK NYE will be included.  It will also contain dress code information.

We've heard you- we are aware of the dress code issue.  We are also reviewing the critique thread from last year to see what else we can improve.  But beyond that, what are your wishes?  There's already a dream NDK thread... What would your Dream NDK NYE be?  When we resume NYE planning, we'll come back to this thread too, so let us know what you want.

On a side note, it does make us happy to see that people are already making plans for NYE.  Please continue! :)

Yeah I wasn't trying to troll or anything with my comment I mean last year I literally couldn't go and i'd like to this year.

It will depend heavily on if I go with anyone what I end up wearing, so i'll have to find that bit of information out as we go :p

I shall give you the pre reg form at NDK since I am already planning to attend this year and setting up the pre party dinner meetup again for this year. And I do agree with enforcing a formal cosplay dress code.

@michi- Yes I so love my America cosplay and I am looking foward to spiffing Alfred up for the ball. Military formal uniforms always intrigued me since my days in ROTC. He won't be wearing a cover (hat) though since the wig is heavily styled and has a cowlick.

I do have one request that supersedes all others. It has to do with crossplay, and what is tasteful and what is not. When done right, it looks quite good honestly. But last year's NYE had a case where it was done VERY, VERY wrong....and I'm sure those of you who went know exactly what I'm talking about. If any of you remember the man in the see through little red dress, you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about, at least they made him cover up the scary bits. No offense to the guy, but I would really prefer that my eyes not be poisoned by such a vision this year. I mean, wear a dress all you want, but PLEASE, not see through!

Our requirements for this year will preclude wearing négligées. But we're not going to take into consideration whether someone "looks good" in something; only that what they're wearing meets minimum requirements.

Actually, I'm rather suprised a thread like this hasn't surfaced sooner.  I'll admit to having the memory of a goldfish with ADHD and Alzheimers, so I may be wrong, but I do seem to recall that a lot of people, while excited, felt blind sided by the announcement of the New Years Ball.

But as you mentioned, the last night of 2009 was the inaugral event, and we can only improve from their~!

Now onto my own suggestions and dreams for the ball!!

1. As you mentioned, you will be including a dresscode information within the prereg info.  Bravo! I applaud you!  Perhaps another good idea would to be to include something like "For more information, please visit our forums at http:// _____________ and include a section about dress for the ball, including things such as "How to do a formal cosplay: AKA Ninjas in tuxedos?!" "Hints and tips to do formal on a budget" and perhaps even a thread where people can ask if their planned outfit meets the requirements.

2. We had a small bar for those 21+ and there was also a table serving things like hot dogs and coffee.  My suggestion? Move the table serving food out of the ball room to free up more space.  If people want a quick snack, they can step out for a moment to eat.  And speaking of refreshments. Non-alcoholic cocktails and "fancy" drinks may be nice for the younger crowd..

3. More slow songs! XD I'm not saying the ball has to be a stuffy event.. but a greater variety of music may be nice ^_- Personally I'd like to hear everything from anime music, video game music, and more.

You should be happy to hear that we're already all over this.  Debuting after NDK will be an official NDK NYE website.  I'm sorry it can't be up sooner, but there is no NYE subcommittee-  The same volunteeer folks putting together NDK put togther NYE, and we're all a tad busy at the moment.  ;)

Thanks for the suggestions- keep 'em coming!

I went last year for NDK NYE, and had a total blast(plus it was a good way for me to give a big middle finger to 2009, which was a very bad year for me); I might wear a mask this year with my Kyon jacket, but I haven't really decided what I'm gonna do yet(I still have 3 months to decide, so that's plenty of time for me)... Hopefully I was dresses somewhat formally(I don't own a bow tie, unfortunately, but I consider a dress shirt, a tie, and a jacket formal, but that's just me).
Strike me down, and I will become more powerful than you can possibly imagine
