Tabletop Gaming room questions?
« on: August 23, 2010, 12:43:34 pm »
I kinda feel silly asking this seeing to how many NDK's I've been to, but I've never actually ever poked my head into the gaming room before.

Do they have tables setup that groups of people can just coming and use? Are there any time limits?

My D&D group gets together every other week, and NDK actually falls on a weekend where we'd normally be playing. I don't really suspect I can talk them into coming to the con just to game, but talking about it did bring up the question on what the gaming room is actually for. I've been to other, much larger con (i.e. Dragon Con) that is able to set aside whole rooms in just the off chance people would want to get together for a CCG or the like. But seeing how NDK is so much smaller it makes me think that they would try to get more structure with their living gaming room - or at least set time limits to prevent people from hogging up space all day long (we usually play a good 8 hours straight).

The Game room at NDK has just about every board game you can come up with.  It has a lot of tables for general gaming tomfoolery and a lot of space.  In terms of D&D, I'm not sure about that, but I've always been sure to pop into Gaming to catch a random board game to exercise my geek muscles...

Being someone who has spent many a-hour in the gaming room I can say that if you wish to host a D&D session you'll want to run it by Pyro (head of gaming [not VGR]) I'm sure he'll be fine with it so long as there is room and you and your group is not being obnoxious.

I kind of eluded to this in another post in the VGR portion of the forum; but will the boardgame room have Settlers of Catan?  And if not, would it be okay for me to bring it (and the extra players extension pack) in for a few games with other willing NDK participants?

It is more than likely they will have Settlers of Catan and its expansions.

I'm bringing Munchkin this year.

I'm also almost 99.999999% certain they have almost every incarnation of munchkin

Munchkin is always fun. There's also Munchkin Quest board game that I would love to see there (seen it played, never partaken in a game myself)

To answer the question about format of the room - it's basically a drop in and find something to play sort of deal. If you need someone to play with, there will probably be someone there, and if you want to join a game about to start, they will probably need another player. If you don't know what you want to play, ask us staffers for a recommendation. That's why we're there (well, and to play games all weekend ^_^).

Games-wise, Settlers is likely to be there, and so is Munchkin, but you are always welcome to bring a game if you have it, and if you don't need it, either leave it in your room, or leave it in the boardgaming room for others to play (just make sure to put your name in it so we know it's yours and come back for it before we close on Sunday!)

And if a particular game you're looking for isn't there, any one of us oh-so-friendly staff can probably point you to something that may be new to you but you may like it too.

Regarding doing a D&D session, I would also say it would be a good idea to run it by Pyro. Would it be the sort of thing where anyone could join, or just the folks you regularly play with? How long of a session would you be running? These would be the sorts of questions he would probably want to have answered.

If you send him a note and don't hear back, drop me a pm and I'll follow up with him.

And I think he may not have all the Munchkins in the world anymore. They've replaced a lot, but there are still some gaming holes since the house burned down, and I think Munchkin kind of fell into that hole. Maybe I'll bring some of mine. ^_^
