Gundam discussions
« on: August 14, 2010, 10:18:47 am »
So I have been out of the Gundam loop shortly after SEED Destiny in Japan ended.  I lost all of my interested in Gundam back in 2005 that was not related to Wing, sold off all of my DVDs, and when I did buy the first Zeta collection, I stopped watching it after 20 episodes because I could not stand Amuro.  Then I marathoned Gundam Wing in one weekend last month and am now in this Gundam craze.  I just bought and watched the original movie trilogy, the Zeta movies, and am now working on the Zeta series and SEED series, along with buying Destiny, 00, CCA, and I need to get the others.

With that said, what are you favorite Gundam series?  Do you like the dubs?  What don't you like about Gundam?

Wing is by far my favorite series.  For one thing, the Gundams are not controlled by the military, so the pilots are free to do almost anything they want to do with them.  Plus the Deathscythe and Epyon are two of the best looking Gundams ever, and despite a slow period in the late teens to early twenties, I can watch Wing over a million times.  On the other hand, I have mixed thoughts on the dub.  The dub is great for the most part, but the minor characters that have voice changes midway through the series (Dr J, Howard, Catherine) really ruin it for me and is the reason I stick with the Japanese version.  Oh yeah, that and Brian Drummond cannot match Koyasu's voice for Zechs thanks to his Batman impersonation.

On the other hand, I'm not big on the original series, but I prefer the series to the movies.  The movies are great, but the series has a lot more development than the movies.

As for Zeta, I liked the movies, it is what got me back into wanting to watch the Zeta series, but again, I find the series to be so much better despite the slow as hell first 10 episodes.  I'm currently 25 episodes in and am enjoying almost every moment of it.  The dub on the other hand is dreadful, especially since they changed the voices to Char, Amuro, and Bright, and they are really noticeable.  This series is definitely one I will watch subbed with maybe just watching it dubbed once.  Oh yeah, and I absolutely love the Zeta Gundam, so it has become one of my top 5 favorite Gundams.  Not to mention the Quebeley is my absolute favorite non-Gundam mobile suits in the entire franchise.

The SEED series are a mixed bag for me.  When I first watched SEED on CN, I hated it.  It was boring, plus the commercial breaks and once a week episodes did not help matters.  Then when Destiny premiered in Japan, I watched it raw and loved it so much better, mostly because it had more action and better mobile suits.  However, I just started watching the first SEED on DVD and now that I am watching it in groups of episodes without commercials and edits, I am enjoying it a lot more.  Oh, and I watched the first episode twice, once in English and once in Japanese, and i have to say, I like it better dubbed.  While La Crouset sounds great in both, Athrun and Toll are much better in English, especially Toll who sounds like he has smoker's voice in Japanese.  The one voice I like better in Jp though is Cagalli's.  Her english voice sounds similar, but the emotions in her dubbed voice are non-existant.  As I'm watching SEED right now, I'm not sure how my feelings will be on Destiny when I get to it.  They may change, they may not.

As for the others, it has been a while since I have watched them, but I recall like 0083, but hated 0080.  08th MS Team was pretty good, and as much as I love Char's Counterattack, the movie moves way to slowly.  It did not need to be 2 hours, let alone focus on Quess and Hathaway as much as it did.  F91 was really good though, but again, it takes too long to move.  G Gundam was an odd ball, as I never really watched it, and I just picked up the 00 DVDs as I'm getting sick of waiting for Blu-Ray versions that may never happen.  Unicorn's first episode was decent, but when you have a 50 minute episode and the Gundam just appears in the last minute, there is something wrong.

Lastly, I am very excited that Turn A was licensed.  I watched the first 10 episodes and it had a very Escaflowne feel to it.

My favorite gundam series is M.S. Gundam 08th M.S. Team. It was more down to earth with actual soldiers fighting on front lines. Also the characters where in my oppinion more in depth then Wing or the ones I have seen.

U.C. 4 Life! ;D

Never really got into the anything outside of the original continuity. Gundam Wing featured overpowered Gundams in which the fight was pretty much over when they arrived. G Gundam was "Street Fighter Gundam". Never got to see much of Gundam X or Gundam 00. Still interested in giving Seed a chance because it looks like someone mixed U.C. Gundam with Wing.

Never been a fan of the dubs that I've seen, but partially because the original Gundam contained so many classic Japanese actors that went on to do a lot of series in the 80's and 90's. The actor for Amuro, Toru Furuya, also did Seiya in Saint Seiya, Yamcha in Dragonball, and Tuxedo Kamen in Sailor Moon.

Zeta Gundam is actually the "Empire Strikes Back "of the Gundam universe. It is when the political machinations really come into full bloom. Shifts in who you thought were good guys and bad guys and the reasons they fight. It was actually what cemented Gundam into the Japanese culture even though all of the references are from the original series/3 movies.

I watched Gundam 00 and was rather obsessed with it, it's like wing but better imho. But, I really got into Gundam when Unicorn first got announced . I watched All of the orginal Mobile Suit Gundam, then all of Zeta, and then Char's Counterattack.

Zeta... was really hard for me to get through, The Zeta Movies were really hard for me to keep up with (okay, now where are they going!?) but I liked some of the overall story. The Mobile Suit Gundam Trilogy is my favorite out of the old school stuff. Find the story classic.

Recently I can't stop watching Gundam Unicorn Episode 1. I loved it. The World of UC is presented so well and new but the same feeling as before.
It brings to me a sense of nostalgia (to last year lol) and is a very well done UC entry, music, animation, OMG. very excited for ep2.

I also watched:
MSG Stardust
the 8th MS Team (liked)
"The souls of mankind have yet to be liberated from Earth's gravity" -Char Aznable/Mobile Suit Gundam

ah Gundam, a classic show that will always have a place in the heart of anime fans, no matter what show. My first was Wing on Toonami, followed by oo79 (Sadly it never finished on Toonami) then 8th Team. I'd like to see Zeta, and I really wish ZZ would get dubbed. G Gundam to me is awesome due to it being dbz with giant robots, plus the corny speeches make it funny. I refuse to watch Seed or Destiny because its a horrible remake of 079.

WARNING, CONTAINS ZETA GUNDAM SPOILERS!!!

So I finished Zeta Gundam the other day and here are my thoughts I posted on another board:

First off, Kamille is one of my favorite Gundam pilots as his story is just so tragic and he truly grows as a character. Not to mention the finale is a major shocker. On the other hand, I thought Amuro was even more of a spoiled b---- than he was in the original series, but his episodes were much more tolerable the second through than the first. I thought Char was pretty awesome and my favorite episode is when they are in Dakar with him giving his speech about the truth behind the Titans. However, I must admit, I was very confused on the politics at times, especially since Char's speech seemed to be pointless by the next episode since you never saw anything change from it. The characters themselves were pretty likable, as they all had their own distinct personalities, but I will admit, I got sick of Jerid and wished he had died earlier in the series. That guy was so annoying. The other two characters I had no remorese for when they died were Katz and Reccoa. First off, Katz got everything he deserved due to how much of a dick he became as the series progressed while Reccoa's switching of the sides made little sense. I mean really, "He treated me like a real woman so I have turned against you all." Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Scirroco was pretty cool though, reminded me of Treize, but my favorite character in the series has to be Haman Karn. She was rutheless and smart, had a lot of well throught out strategies, and overall, she just kicked ass. Oh yeah, I almost forgot Four, who was also a great character and provided some of my favorite episodes to the series as well.

The mechs were also great, especially the Zeta and Qubeley. The Zeta is now within my top favorite five Gundam designs of all time, while the Qubeley has always been my favorite non-Gundam mech design, so it was nice to finally see it in action. There were a lot of great mobile suits in this series, like the three blue starfish looking things (cannot think of their names now) that Yazan commanded and of course the Psycho Gundam. The first version was really cool to look at and was just an interesting design due to its size all around. I do wish we had gotten more of it during the series though, but that is okay, as like the Qubeley, it was not over done. Sadly though, I am mixed on Char's Shiki. It had a great unique design to it, but it came out of nowhere. One minute he is piloting the Hizack the next he has the Shiki. I did not have any feelings towards Scirocco's O mech though, it was not bad, but it was not that good either.

As for the story itself, except for a few hiccups here and there, the series was pretty solid all of the way through. Like every 50 episode series, it could have been told in less than 40 episodes, but for what it is worth, I enjoyed almost every minute of it. As for the ending, I have mixed thoughts, as there really was not an ending since the series was always meant to lead into ZZ. However, since Bandai has yet to bring ZZ to the US for some reason, I think the ending blows because nothing is truly resolved in the end. This is where the movies do a better job even though they completely screw it up by making it impossible for everything after Zeta to occur. Fortunately, I have downloaded fansubs of ZZ, but I wish I could watch it on DVD and with better subs than downloadable quality.

In the end, like I said, Zeta has become my second favorite series as despite the cliffhanger ending, the series was top notch in my book. With that said, I'm going to rewatch it soon and give the english dub a chance in hopes that it might be good despite Char, Amuro, and Bright having different voices.

WARNING CONTAINS GUNDAM SEED SPOILERS:

Well I spent Friday watching Gundam SEED (okay, I only watched 21-50, as I spent the last week watching the first 20) and I have to say, I wished I had sat down to watch the series on DVD back when it first came out, as it turned out to be quite enjoyable. When I first watched it on CN I could not get into it thanks to the weekly episodes and the massive edits. Now that I watched it all in a little over a week, I enjoyed almost every minute of it. It is going to be interesting to rewatch Destiny as well though, as I watched that series raw when it first aired, so we'll see if it holds the same as it did then. Oh yeah, I will admit though, I watched SEED dubbed. I watched the first episode in both languages and came to the conclusion that I liked most of the english voices better. While La Crouset sounds great in both, Athrun and Toll (especially Toll) were just much better in English. On the other hand, I find Cagalli's Jp voice to be better, but I'd rather stick with the one with the majority of the voices I prefer. Of course, if Bandai knew how to give Char a good voice in the dub (and not change voices inbetween series) I would probably enjoy the UC dubs a lot more. Now I cannot even watch Unicorn dubbed regardless of how good Ep1's dub was since Char is going to be in it. Anyway, the Freedom is pretty awesome, especially in its introduction episode and I love the Forbidden and Providence. Forbidden has the kick ass scythe while the Providence has funnels. I love funnels. Not everything is great in SEED though, as four clipshows is rediculous and this series has the worst character I have ever seen in Gundam history, Flay. Thank goodness she dies, although it is not soon enough. Overall though, like I said, I enjoyed SEED a lot more than I did the first time and I can see why it was quite popular.

Might I say that you have good taste. :) Those happen to be my favs as well.

I'm one of those Macross/Robotech fans who didn't want to believe that Gundam was as good as people were saying it was. I flat-out refused to watch it for years until a friend of mine bought me my first Gundam model, a 1/100 scale High Grade Wing Gundam. Somewhere around that time, I saw "Endless Waltz" and fell in love with the Deathscythe Gundam. From there, I sought out any and all Gundam but, it was the UC stories that captured my attention the most...especially Zeta Gundam. I remember reading a story in Animerica magazine about an "alternative to watching the Star Wars trilogy on Christmas". The author pointed out the "Gundam Trilogy" as something anime fans should watch so I did and I became a UC fan for life.

Don't get me wrong as I did like SEED quite a bit (Destiny was a slight disappointment for me, though) and I am currently watching 00 on SciFi channel, I don't mind the alternate timelines at all. As long as the stories are good and the mecha look nice, I'm gonna watch and buy them.

Lastly, I am very excited that Turn A was licensed.
Me too!!! I can't wait till it actually gets released. Of all the things that I saw at this year's ComiCon, Bandai's announcement of the Turn A licensing was the one thing that I regret missing.

My fave is Gundam Wing, and always will be.. and I like G Gundam.. I cant really say why.. because I don't know... but I like wing because It really plays with human emotion and has very mature concepts and an over all portrayal of the human race that I rather like...such as the fact that not any of the main characters are inherently good or evil.. it is a difficult concept to grasp but its just more human... i feel many of the newer Gundams don't really explore this as much or show the nature of war as well....

I like Gundam Wing. Heck, it introduced me to Gundam. Good mecha and a pretty good story however, the one thing that makes Wing stand out for me is that all but two (Sally Po and, my Wing fave, Lucrieza Noin) of the characters from the show are crazy. They are all nuts. Whether it be Heero and Relena's deathwish, Duo running around calling himself the "God of Death" or Lady Une going from cold-blooded killer to "Ambassador of Peace", Gundam Wing is filled with more than it's fair share of certifiable characters. :)

Gundam Wing was what got me into anime, and it's still my favorite series. I like the sketchy character portrayals because they give so much room to play around, and as Buffalostyle mentioned, they're all off their rockers.  (Treize is my favorite. You have to be a specific kind of awesome to plan in your own death. Surely that is not a spoiler any more?)  That and the complete silliness of the dialogue, even when it's not dubbed; I am a subtitle snob, though some of that doesn't fare any better written than spoken. Also, most of my keigo practice came from Gundam Wing, and I love drawing the characters, and... yeah. Big otaku here.

I really enjoyed 00, though the latter half of the first season was a bit of a slog due to being SO depressing, and I didn't find any characters to really like until.. well. Spoilers. *points at avatar* And then Tieria got awesome, instead of being an obnoxious martinet.

Both deal with some very adult themes - death and bereavement, war (of course) and its effects on both those involved and those dragged in (because it's Gundam, and nobody is uninvolved); the handling of ideals vs reality, especially from the political characters, and the lack of duality. There are no clear-cut good vs. evil setups, and that I really like.

Gundam 00 is probably my favorite Gundam series so far. Episode after episode always reeled me in back for more since the story & characters were portrayed so well. I think another reason why I enjoyed this series so immensely is that the battles are never too one sided.

Otherwise the next series I liked is G Gundam. Just love the whole Super Robot attack commands like "Shining Finger".

My all time favorite Gundam series would have to be 08th MS Team. I liked it because it was more believable with mass produced mechs, I also liked the dubbing.
Also Stardust Memories was another good one mainly because I liked Gundam Alex ^^ and that sweet shotgun they had in that series
Gundam Wing was my first gundam series I saw but I like the older ones better
