interestingly, i found out that the scanlation aggregator sites like onemanga are run by triads and other mafia organisations. they go and pull scanlations from small groups, take out the credits for who did the translations, and put them up on the aggregators.
that being besides the point, i'd like to say 2 things: 1) learn japanese if you want to read manga. no one owes you a translation, and 2) most scanlation groups, like most fansub groups, pull their scanlations once something gets licensed in the US. from what i've seen, they're going after the big aggregator sites, not the actual groups.
what the japanese and american companies really need to look into is digital distribution, and being able to read on e-readers, with concurrent (or at least close to) publication, much like viz is doing with rin-ne.
however, there are ppl out there that just want what they want for free. they feel entitled to it, and won't ever pay for it. shutting down scanlations, or pirate bay, or any other bootleg/piracy sites changes nothing in how they behave.
my final word: about bloody time. don't know why it took so long.
