ART SHOW PHOTOS. winners ect.
« on: July 20, 2010, 07:26:40 pm »
I know NDK has a strict "NO PHOTOGRAPHY" in the art show room, and im not saying anything against it because that is what many galleries and art exhibits (most, not all) do.

But i think that there should be an exeption to that rule, I think that the NDK staff (or other designated person) should take pictures of all the competition winners.I know at the end of ndk all the winners are givin ribbons and what not and you can see who won if you go in there, but what about the people who left NDK early, before the winners were even chosen? Or the people who got there too late too see all the winners before they started going home with their respectful owners? I often end up going at the last minute when the con is over and everyones gathering their things and can only count myself lucky if i spot a winner.

Also some con goers might actually win a ribbon at an art show and go home to show someone who didnt go to the con. When that person says "OH! thats AWSOME!... who won the other ribbons", all you could say was "I dont know" or try to describe them as close as you possibly could.

The jist of what im saying is could the NDK staff/volunteers PLEASE possibly take photos of the art show category winners.

the same can also be said for the costume contests, but photography is allowed on those ones.

I have no knowledge of what goes on in the Art and Model, but I believe part/most of that rule is to protect the creative property, etc, of the artists.  To take pictures of any sort would be to violate that, especially without express permission.  The obtaining of that express permission would definitely be a prerequisite before anything like this could happen.

As for cosplay, you can usually find the rankings/photos on various websites. :3

I can't speak much for why the rule is in place but I think Sporkie is pretty much spot on. I do know that the No Photography rule is pretty much a standard at all Con art shows.  As for the costume contest winners. We post up a list of winners in the costume and cosplay contest section of the boards. The list for 2009 can be found here: http://ndkdenver.org/forum/index.php/topic,3816.0.html
If you want pictures ACParadise also has a listing of winners with entry video of contestants at their website: http://www.acparadise.com/acp/cons.php?cyid=2451&t=3&w=4
The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it.

We can't make any exceptions to the "no photography" rules of the art show due to artist copyright but I would be happy to post a list of all the winners here on the forum after the con.

why not have the people who enter the art show sign a waver or have an option on the form they have to fill out where it says if they would allow a photo of their art to be taken.
Like:
"If an entry you submitted is picked by a judge as a category winner would you permit Nan Desu Kan Staff to photograph the item and post it on the official website along with other art show winners?
yes [  ]
No [  ]"

i think that would be fair because then if someone absolutly does not want a photo taken then they wont have to worry that i will be.

but bamani you have a good alternative choice. Im just surprised ndk has never done anything like that before

No one has ever asked about the art show winners before.  It won't be too hard to throw up a list since we now keep electronic files.  Look for the list some time after con.

I won the award for "Best Example of Something We Liked" (it's the king of nebulous award titles!) in the model competition for my painted Hordes War Hog.  Here's a lousy photo of it (he's the big one):

Speaking of the winners... when people are checking out to buy art that they won, do you guys check the I.D.'s to make sure that they are the person that has won the bid on whichever pieces they present at checkout?

I'm worried that I won a piece this year and that someone who wasn't me walked away with it.

The bidders have to give their name to a staff member to receive the item they bid on.  All of the art was monitored by staff on Sunday to assure that no one walked away with something that they did not bid on.  You most likely were outbid.

We did have some pieces that had not been picked up by the cutoff time so they were returned to the artist.

BTW:  Look for the award list this evening!  I'll upload it when I get home!
