Suggestions for the Jpop dance on Friday
« on: July 08, 2010, 05:28:23 pm »
(Mods, I apologize if this topic is in the wrong place, if so please feel free to move it for me)

Hello folks. So I had the pleasure (well, kinda, it was all right) of attending Anime Expo this year last week. At that convention they tried an experiment on us American anime fans. They had an event called "Hardcore Synergy", sponsored by MyDjsobad.com. The group brought in actual Japanese DJs that specialize in hardcore and happy hardcore type music such as Mproject, DJ Guroovey, DJ Chucky, Red Alice, and others. They (the group running the event) was somewhat nervous how it would be received, but it went over VERY well, it was easily the best reason for going to AX this year in my opinion.

The last few Jpop dances at NDK have bothered me for a few reasons. The biggest is simply there is very little creativity or effort put into it. I've literally just heard popular anime openings and endings with little to no mixing involved. I just feel that it could be better. So to cut to the chase, I would sure love to see you guys expand to other Jpop/Jcore titles that actually get people dancing and having a good time, and I highly recommend this kind of music. Am I saying get those famous DJs over here? Of course not. But based on how the AX crowd took it, using this kind of music would do wonders for the NDK crowd and really get people more interested in future dances.

I don't expect this to be taken too seriously, I can only hope, but I'm highly confident improving upon the Jpop dance in this direction would be a good thing to do. Thanks for reading

Shukan Sentimental by SCANDAL has a nice rock beat to it, while Utada Hikaru's Wait and See has good dance beat, and although its english, Leona Lewis's Brave has a real good beat and the chours itself makes me wanna dance..and i usually dont, haha!

I think the Saturday dance is more what you're looking for.  I know there's an actual DJ.  I'm not sure what type of music he plays, but you might be able to put in requests...

Hmm, this is walking on eggshells, there really is no nice reply to this. A staff member using the words "I think" in this context does not inspire much confidence, I apologize for sounding rude. The most constructive reply I can provide is this: DJ Bullock runs the Saturday night thing and this type of music I suggested would not be appropriate for it simply because its not his style, it would not fit with what he has played the last few years. I only put this up because it seems very unorganized what goes on Friday night and this is an opportunity to spice it up and make it better.

Amusingly, I know people who handled the AX dance and the DJ for NDK's Jpop dance, so with my feet firmly in both camps, I say this:

IMHO the JPop dance is fine just as it is. It is distinctly different than the "Rave" and fun for those of us who don't know the difference between happy hardcore and sad softcore (sorry, that was a cheap shot...). Making the Jpop dance into Hardcore Synergy would essentially turn things into the Friday Night Rave and the Saturday Night Rave. And unless NDK moves to a convention space that has room for 2 or more dances a night, I'd say keeping that variety is vital. it might be something to consider if DJ Bullock decides to step aside, so you could replace one rave with another, but don't remove the variety if it can be helped.

not all of us like techno raves. i much prefer friday's dance to saturday. chock it up to age. i actually want to listen to _songs_, and not just a monotonous drum program when i'm dancing. you know, melody, harmony, and such, other than just a constant, non-stop, brain-deadening rhythm.

some ppl really like techno. that's what saturday is for. for us old fuddy-duddies, leave us the friday dance the way it is.

Wow.  That was incredibly rude.
She was pointing you towards the dance that fits your request better- it wasn't meant to 'inspire confidence'; it was a suggestion.

If you have a song request or suggestions for music genres, you are more than welcome to submit them, but we will not stand for you landblasting someone who is attempting to help you; staff or no. In the future, keep that in mind.

As for the actual subject of the thread, here is the con standpoint:
GimmeAnime hit it right on the head.  We keep the dances different in order to have a variety of music available for multiple sorts of tastes.  For as many complaints that we get about the dance, we also get many compliments.  While you may find this uncreative and effortless, other people enjoy the different mixes of openings- as evidenced by the fact that the room is consistently well-populated throughout the evening.

Keep the suggestions coming, but let's try to be a bit more respectful from here on out...

*ducks head* Aw crap, I should have just kept my mouth shut :(

I agree that Gimme Anime has addressed the issue sufficiently, and I believe this can end the discussion. Please feel free to lock this topic mods, thanks for the opportunity to discuss it.
