If your intentions are to start working out to gain muscles, you may need to add to your food consumption instead of reduce your food consumptions.

Muscles weigh more than fat, if you are gaining a lot of muscles and losing fat you may gain weight but it will be muscles weight, so you might be gaining weight but losing fat.

If you have been an un active or little active person ;  it is not good for you to jump strait in to high intensity work outs; you need to start small and steadily increase your work outs.

While building muscles you need to rest a few days a week, unless your muscles have time to heal between workouts they wont build or increase, and your body may be over worked and go into fatigue.

It has been mentioned a few times, but I will say it again, sugar and caffeine are like other substances if they are being consumed a lot by a person, completely cutting them out of your diet will have withdrawal effects on the body.

If your drinking 3 to 6 sodas a day; try slowing reducing the amount you drink.

And sorry to burst your bubble Lusha, but a bagel can have just as much sugar and carbs as a piece of cake.

Good going on trying to choose a healthier option

But people got to watch out for those things. Like those salads which have as much calories and fat as a cheeseburger.

Last year I lost 40 pounds, then gained 10 pounds. But the ten pounds I gained back was muscles weight.

Best of luck to everybody.

HEYA EVERYONE! I was actually thinking that we start having group activities that can make us get active and keep us accountable. I know that sometimes if I don't have to work out with other people, I end up avoiding working out. But if there is a date, time, and other people involved I end up going and do it.

SOOOOOOOOOO, how about we do some voting on when and what activities we can do?

What day of the week?
1 Monday
2 Tuesday
3 Wednesdayy
4 Thrusday
5 Friday
6 Saturday
7 Sunday

What time?
1 Morning (10am-1pm)
2 Afternoon (2pm-6pm)
3 Night (7pm-10pm)

What activity?
1 Skating @ Skate City
2 A scenic run
3 Yoga
4 Hiking
5 Sport (Soccer, Frisbee, BasketBall, etc.))
6 Playground
7 Suggestions

Go ahead and give me numbers!
Give a man a fish, and he'll stink up a town. Give him a fishing pole, he'll poke out your eye. See? Perfect logic.

Thanks for posting this Rae! ^__^

I'm 28 years old, 5'7" and 185lbs. Ultimately I'd like to get down to 155lbs. Call me sentimental but I'd like to fit into some of my old cosplays and just be more healthy all around.
The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it.

wow..this group is taking off... it makes me happy.. thank you all for your interest, questions, and discussion contributions!

@ mitsu im off for the rest of the summer.. so the where and when doesnt matter to me much i love hiking.. and skating of all types i havent been on my blades in a looong time so it will be fun to get on them again too so count me in for everything... I am also getting into cycling as well

this week im going to be working on making actual recipes for some of my more famous dishes.. starting with a sushi bar inspired cucumber salad that as a normally hater of cucumbers i cant get enough of :3

also tomorrow starts my exercise program, which i will delve into my thoughts and learnings on that..when i was in arizona i had the opportunity to meet with an exercise physiologist (a guy who studies weight loss through exercise) and i will post my notes up here tomorrow for you guys to consider..

at lusha and whomever else is interested in my ramble on food- recognizing that the chocolate cake was not the best choice is huge and doing something different is huge as well! trust me... my sweet tooth knows no bounds...something that i have come to understand recently thanks to a nutritionist in Arizona is that dieting does not work...deprivation fails.. as such there are two things to help you lose weight on the eating half the first, is watch your portions.. i.e if you really want that piece of chocolate cake figure out the serving size and how many calories are in it...and just take a small piece instead of half of the cake...also.. research or ask about healthy substitutes.. ie for breakfast exchange a high sugar high carb cereal  with eggs and bacon.. however egg yolks contain most of the calories.. so.. you save yourself a bunch of calories by nixing the yolks yet you still get the filling that eggs bring.. also substitute fatty bacon for Canadian bacon...a yummy lean alternative that still enables you to have meat... top it off with a cup or so of berries (good time to buy em too :P) for fiber and if you have to have carbs.. toast a half a piece of whole grain bread.. not whole wheat! whole grain.. and natural butter...
the gist of what im saying is.. everything in moderation, and there are yummy healthy things out there .. most of your weight gain and loss depends on how much processed foods you eat.. so things heavy in sugar and white flower (like cakes) are broken down and stored as fat reserves much easier than all natural foods like whole grains protein and fiber..choosing a bagel over a cake is good for lessening the processed sugar but not the processed carbs..
ezekial (sp) bread is probably the healthiest for you if you do want breads.. also kraft makes a really good olive oil mayo that still tastes great (and im from the south..we like our mayo)

this stuff really hit home for me when i was in high school... i was a ripped BA back then... i used to run everyday and lift weights with the football team.. and eat with them too..every night almost was a different all you can eat special at some restaurant.. and i used to clear out as much as the linemen.. but alas i hurt my back..and due to my diet and new found forced sedentary lifestyle.. i gained most of my weight...nearly purely based on the quantity of food i was consuming at every meal.. re shrinking your stomach to be satisfied with normal ammounts of food is no easy task.. but it will be worth it in the long run

This is totally awesome! I started working out myself, started last week actually. I had three reasons for doing it. 1) I want to look better in my Theif Rikku cosplay,  2) I'm doing it for the boyfriend (wanna make him wanna keep me XD lol) and 3) I just want to be healthy and feel like I'm taking care of myself.

Basically what I've done is picked out what I want to fix on myself. I searched youtube and found various videos that were perfect for what I wanted to target! I did it all last week and my boyfriend complimented on how I was starting to look! The vids I found are my saviors now! And I'm even more determined to work harder! :D

Staying in shape and getting fit is definitely easier to do when you have people around you that are doing it too! This is a great thread! :D I'm totally in for this!

what a great idea!

i've been sitting at about 135 for 3 years. i hyperextended my right knee really badly at starfest in 2007 (remember that, greg?), and it really fubbared my ability to exercise that summer. i ballooned out to my present weight. i'd like to lose about 20-25 lbs, and be the weight i was when i moved out here many moons ago.

i used to be really fit when i was younger, but age and sports-related injuries/arthritis are setting in. so, working out can be difficult. so, a few weeks ago, i started working out again, doing more gymanstics/dance type warm up routines to try to strengthen/build muscle/get back flexibility, but without the impact. do you realise how difficult a gran plie is to do properly when you're incredibly out of shape? it's pretty pathetic.

i have a theory, however, that rapid weight loss is really bad. i know the experts say 1-2 pounds a week, but i think that's too much. i think it should be more like 1-2 pounds a month. the reason is is the fact that our bodies have evolved from a feast/famine model. humans, when the opportunity presents itself, gorges on food, storing as much fat as possible to weather the lean times. this is why we have cravings for sugar and fat - highest calories, easiest to transfer to fat. i think what happens with yo-yo dieting is that you lose weight too fast, and your body reacts and goes into famine mode, reducing your metabolism even further, and accelerating the transition of sugars to fat much faster. so, you plateau out at about 3 months, then start gaining weight back, regardless of what you do.

so, i think weight loss should be slow and gradual. work on building muscle and respiratory health first. slowly change your diet to eat healthier foods. simple stuff like less red meat, more lean chicken and fish. choose grilling or broiling/baking instead of frying. sweet potato instead of baked potato. skim milk instead of fatted milk. and, a big one: HERBAL TEA instead of coffee, especially if you put lots of sugar/cream in it. i suggest mint tea, cos it wakes you up, has no calories, soothes the tummy, and tastes great =)

btw, BMI is total BS. you'd have to be a stick figure to be fit with BMI. roger's BMI says he's moderately obese. anyone that's seen roger knows he's on the skinny side. it doesn't take into account the fat/muscle ratio, your body build, density of bones, etc. the best measure of your body is a fat index.

I agree with rini; graduall weight los and diet changing is better than rapid weight loss.

Last year when I was doing well, I lost between 2 - 4 pounds a month.  And that was by gradually changing my diet and exercise life style.

I admit I have been out of shape for the past 7 months, and really want to get back to my normal work out  routine, which is 70 minute work outs 3 - 5 times a week.

Right now I have only gotten it back up to 40 minute work outs twice a week.

Not that anybody should be discouraged from working out to look great in cosplay for NDK ; even if someone just loses 3 - 4 pounds from now until NDK, those few pounds can make a difference.

Now the question I have is should we all keep eachother accountable for what we have and haven't done?

@ RoninEclipse2G No in RaeWolfDemon first said that we don't have to commit to it but if some people want to buddy up or do a group accountability then they can. If you want to do something like that just say you do and tell others to pm you.

no, only positive, reinforcing feedback.

it's something that roger's tried drilling in my brain for years. it's not so much weight loss, as it is health. weight loss is incidental, and a great side effect to getting healthier. so, i've tried to stop focusing on weight loss, and focus more on just being healthier, in general.

one thing i was thinking of if we can post recipes in here for food tips. i'm always on the lookout for new recipes =)

I never said anything about negative feedback.

Well I think I'm going to be accountable to the group anyway. I plan on weighing in tonight to get a proper baseline.

In other news I've only had one 12oz Pepsi today, so I have a headache the size of texas right now

I've been reading this thread and I absolutely love it. :] Good luck to all of you!

As for me, I'm becoming a slight health nut. I'm at 130lbs and I'm 5'7''. I'm not really trying to lose fat weight or gain muscle weight, but whichever direction it goes in I'd be happy. I really want more definition, and I've been lifting like crazy.

Except all that gain has given me some stretch marks that I absolutely hate! I don't know if I should keep lifting, or just amp up my cardio :[ Any ideas?
