Enigma's art dump
« on: April 25, 2010, 09:07:24 am »
I've been in a big creative slump lately, in part because I just haven't had time to sit down and draw, and in part because whenever I do, I feel like my drawings aren't up to snuff. I figured it might help to make an informal topic to throw sketches at, and I'm hoping it'll motivate me to draw more. I will certainly appreciate comments and critiques from all of you who would be kind enough to give them! Apologies in advance--I'm trying to refine a style, and in the meantime I have zero consistency.

I'll start with a birthday card I sketched up the other day. It's the first fanart I've ever done of Hellboy, so the stylistic choices are a little rough. I wish I'd spent a little more time refining it.

Next, an original chibi. I have tons of characters who I create personalities and life stories for, sketch up once or twice, and then never touch again. Selene here is one of them. For some reason I always have a hard time with chibis. You'd think they'd be easier!

And for kicks and giggles, a weird lady that I sketched at work. Hello, strange anatomy. Kind of more shoujo-inspired than I've drawn in ages. I used to draw really shoujo stuff all the time, and I randomly wanted to see if I'd enjoy doing it again. The answer is yes--and no.

Thanks for looking! :)

You really have a style all your own. Even though there are obvious ties to manga and comic art it's still definitely original and I really like seeing that.

Do you start by hand and then transfer to photoshop for. The coloring?
Planned cosplays for 2012:
Big Boss (Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater), Black Waltz 3 (Final Fantasy IX), Nappa (Dragonball Z), The Stig's Spartan cousin (Halo/Top Gear mashup)

Haha. I love you too man. :D

Valenkiya: Thanks you. :3

Ronin: Well thanks. ^^ I guess I'm still working out kinks and stuff. Trying to make something new is hard. :B
Yeah, I do all the lines by hand. I'm no good at drawing straight on the computer. And yep, just photoshop for coloring.

More eclectic sketches...

I  have a weakness for goggles, pierced ears, and big, curly hair. I might paint this one eventually after I clean up some errors.

A couple of quick gesture/character sketches... I need to seriously get back to figure drawing because, yikes. o_o Funny proportions for the win! I like the gestures, though.
I probably will post lots of ladies. I really like drawing ladies. :B

Finally, the silly cheeb for the week:

I don't think I've met anyone who's seen Avatar and disliked Uncle Iroh. If I do meet such a person, we can never be friends. This guy is such a stud, I wish he were my uncle. I looked into adopting him, but they wouldn't let me. Something about him being fictional...?

I <3 your stuff. I totally want an Iroh, the most awesome uncle ever! Your Avatar drawings are oh so cute! I like the Hellboy too. ^____^

Chibi's may be hard for you but they come out so nicely.

Enigma for the win!!!!

Lunara: Aw, thanks buckets! I try. I'm glad you still have your Toph. :D

Katie: Aww. >w< You're way too nice! I'm making a whole slew of new Avatar cheebs and stuff because really, I just can't wait for the movie. >>;

Valenkiya: Thanks! Probably going to have some really strange variety (although I'm sort of trying to gear what I post to the NDK audience), so it's okay if you don't like everything. xD

I realize I'm updating a lot, but I'm trying to keep up on artsy stuff. This time we have a WIP of a Kuroshitsuji piece.

I cropped it because I'm mean and I don't feel like posting the whole thing, but this is the crux of the image. I drew this partly as a present for a friend who is a fan of the show, and partly because I am exactly shallow enough to draw characters just because I like their clothing.

I've also sketched a lot of Chinese babies lately for an upcoming project, but they all look deformed... Poor babies.

Darn right no Grell! I oppose Grell with every fiber of my being! I will never give in to drawing Grell!

...Who is Grell? :B

Valenkiya: Aww, thanks! ^//^

Haven't done much lately. The past couple of weeks have been all kinds of hectic. Alas, I don't even have any cheebs to post! All I have to show at the moment is a work in progress of Miku Hatsune. I hate to jump on a bandwagon just because it's passing through town, but I have to admit that Vocaloid characters are extremely adorable--especially this one. I think her design is simply fabulous, and incorporates one of my favorite color schemes. I like that she is very cute in a sexy, clean-cut, futuristic way, and I love how she is extremely feminine with her long teal tresses. She's been lurking in the back of my mind as a character I must draw for ages now. In short, Miku art has just been waiting to happen, and now it's taking shape. I might end up doing more of her because really--she is too beautiful to pass up.

Funny you should say that...

Zombies are cute. I hope everyone will be one in the future.  ;D

I said animated, not re-animated  :D

That would definitely be the cutest zombie I've ever seen

haha, thank you xB

I've been able to do more art lately than usual, so I painted those sketches from earlier:

And a new one:

I'm experimenting with line and the absence thereof- I'm not sure how I feel about the results, but it is a lot of fun.

I really like the effect on the girl with the cane, and the face and hair of the 3rd, but the rest of her feels like it's lacking depth.

Just my opinion

Yeah, fair enough. I was experimenting with flatter images and positive and negative shapes. Don't think I'll do too much more with that, because I'm really a line person. It was fun though.

Because I am a terrible slacker awesome, I really haven't had time to finish any art for a while.
And there likely won't be more for a couple weeks at least because I'm gettin' married next week, or some such nonsense.

Until next time, here is a Yue cheeb to tide this thread over. I was working on a bunch of Avatar cheebs because I was totally psyched for The Last Airbender movie, but when I read the reviews, my enthusiasm deflated like a beach ball. ...That was stabbed. In the face.
I haven't seen the movie yet, but regardless of how I'll feel about it, I love the TV series like crazy. And if the movie is awful, Yue will punish those responsible... in the name of the moon.

Right after some daydreaming.

(And please, don't discuss the movie here. Let's not let the thread run away on us. :) )
