First timer.
« on: February 21, 2010, 03:39:46 am »
Never been to an anime convention before and I was thinking about going to this one. I have a couple friends that are in to this sort of thing but their lame and ignore me when I ask them about anime cons and if I could tag along with them.

Might go to 2010 and so I don't feel all nervous if I go I decided to try and get to know some people first :)
It'd be nice to maybe even make a couple friends before then!

ps- The nerdy side of me wants to try and make a costume too.

Meet-ups do help. But I went without even knowing crap about cosplaying before. Really, the cons sparked me off into getting into meet-ups, cosplaying, etc. I'd say meeting friends is important, but if you go there on ur own and just make some friends, it works just as well :p

But if u wanna look for a meet-up, I'm trying to put one together for otaku and cosplayers just to make some new friends and get too know some new people. Check out the thread in the meet-up section :p

I met a guy at the con last here who didn't know a thing about anime and he looked like he was having an amazing time anyways. What I'm trying to say is that you needn't be nervous and most of the people you meet would be more than happy to ramble on about their favorite series forever to educate you.
If you don't know what to make your signature, make this your signature. People might get mad when they read it though. I mean, all you're really doing is blathering on about nothing and taking up time that they could be using doing something productive like posting.

...? Okay...

Anyway, lol cons are fun! They're full of fantastic and energetic people, and at leat 80 % of them are super friendly! Meet ups are fun, a good idea to meet some people before going, but they aren't necessary lol. I went to my first con years ago, knowing only one other person and I had a fantastic time ^-^

I cant wait.

Your wait will so be worth it though.  Just once you get on saricuse, the energy just hits you and as you get closer it gets more and more and more concentrated.

No need to be nervous! I was too, when I went to my first convention, but once you're there, you never wanna leave. It's amazing, really. Everyone is just insta-friends. If you go, you will love it and will be hooked. XD

Yes, no need to be nervous whatsoever. lusha is absolutely right about the positive energy; I'm getting bouncy just thinking about it.

But then, I'm getting excited just thinking about going to the con this year already. XDDD

Anyway, I bet you can read up on the con here at the site, and if there're more questions, there'll be answers. ^n_n^

Don't be nervous, conventions are fun, even in your first year. Like many other people have said, go to meet-up section of the forum and look for a meet-up that you'd like to go to. Most people at conventions or meet-ups are really nice so you don't need to worry about being left out.

Let the nerdy side come free! Make a cosplay, I did my first year and it was so cool when people were asking for my pictures.

I won't lie, we all feel nervous. Even the hardest core, most decorated veterans of conventions feel a little twinge of nervousness when they show up to the convention doors, not knowing how they'll be received, how the convention will look, what surprises will be in store...

And that's half the fun! I've never shown up to a convention expecting what eventually occurred, it's a different experience every year. The best thing about this place is, you already know people will be at least decently receptive; they're at a convention for something you already like.

That being said, look around these forums and take all the advice you can. The more prepared you are, the better your first experience will be.

As everyone said don't be nervous. Con friends may be the best friends you will ever make in your life. I for one am blessed to have made such great friends thanks to the cons. That's one blessing I guarantee you'll experience as well.

When I first walked into NDK last year I was so nervous that I thought I would never talk unless it was to my group since we were all new people. But as the day went on I got more brave and began loving every minute of it! I cannot wait until this year's con! Just don't be afraid to talk to someone to get a picture or to talk to someone if they want to do a little roleplay that fits along with your cosplay. It makes everything more entertaining and fun!

I am also really hoping to role play a little bit in the hallways this year, but please don't be disappointed if i am not the best at it in all of my cosplays..  But as for last year Aww my gosh, It was so much fun.  I have made abundances of friends through the con and i get to see all of them again this year and make new friends this year.  Also, for any one out there that will be there first time there this year, don't be afraid to make some mistakes or just ask for some help.  I mean that is kinda what the staffers are there for.  I know that my first con experiance would have gone along a bit smoother if we had asked for help a bit more than we did.  I mean ya, I looked like a noob...  But hey, the way I thought about it was that i was the next "generation" of otaku and that this was a wounderfull way of learning more about the otaku ways.  And after just my first experiance i have learned a lot and a bunch of my NDK friends' familly say that even the experianced con goers still learn a lot about conventions.  I think that is what is so fun about the conventions, you never know whats going to happen next.  ^.^

Con is amazing, especially the first time since it's all new ^^. If you want to do a costume (cosplay as we like tocall it) then pick something that you love that's really simple (ex. my first cosplay was Namine from Kingdom Hearts) you can also buy one online if you think the costume you want to do is too difficult. Everyone's at con simply to have some fun, so don't be nervous.

Some advice I have to make it even more fun is to go to photoshoots and such for your favorite series, even if you aren't cosplaying from it, that way you can meet lots of people who enjooy the same series as you. Just remember con is for fun and you'll be just fine. Can't wait to see you at con

Yessss... yessss... embrace the dark side; it's more fun being a nerd anyway. :D As far as the cosplay, start out with something simple. Also do a lot of research on the char you want to do, then decide whether you want to do that character or another one.

Yay! Squall Leonhart! I am so going to have to get a picture of you! :D

But yes, cons are SO much fun! It is a total blast to get to hang out with fellow otaku like yourself for three whole days. I love it and spend a whole year getting ready and excited! You should totally cosplay if you can. Its such a rush you get when people ask you for pictures or hugs. :) I wouldn't trade going to the NDK or cosplaying or meeting up with new otakus for anything.

Its not a big deal if you go by yourself. Like the instant you walk in, you'll recognize somebody's cosplay and go talk to them and then WHAM! you're all friends! :) Its really ah-mazing, if you get the chance to go.
