Fanfiction in Artist Alley
« on: February 08, 2010, 04:39:04 pm »
Hey guys, I'm planning on writing tons of different fanfictions and getting a group of a few friends that also do fanfiction and grab an Artist Alley table at NDK '11. Is this allowed? :D

I'll have to talk to several different people about this cause I'm not exactly sure, I wont have an answer until later tonight after class, could you elaborate more on the kind of fan fiction your talking about. Thanks. Also did you mean for AA his year or next year?

I meant for next year, since I have to get my works prepared and get a group together and don't want to rush on that. And also, the fanfiction will be a mix of different anime titles, from AxisPowersHetalia to YuGiOh. And if we're allowed we could have some of our own custom writing ideas up for sale as well : ) Appreciate you as always Darkshard : )

Not to be a total downer, but I'm not so sure how popular this idea will be when people can log onto FanFiction.net and read to their heart's content.

This is a totally honest question and I'm just curious. What is going to make you guys more appealing than that to our con goers?

Hmmm, well, I'm thinking more than people would like to read to their hearts content on Fanfiction.net, but also, readers love the book in their hands, as well as people will always shop at Artist Alley and seeing fanfiction will make them want to buy it. (I mean, I've seen it a lot. You can buy shirts with silly slogans online for like 15 bucks (Probably the same shirt too) but when people are shopping in some place with rows of sellers, they just want to buy it right there and then because they can) Of course, this will not apply to all people, but seeing as this group doesn't plan on producing all the fanfiction onto the internet, since it's a new story, if people are interested they would have to purchase it at the stand. I know this doesn't make it any more appealing than fanfiction.net, but I already knew that that would be a factor.

Also, I usually include certain special factors in my fanfictions, like for YuGiOh, I'll include the decks for those interested, or how the story was made, or other specials. Usually most won't consider doing this in fanfiction.

Finally, I'm debating about whether to do some illustrations at different points in the fanfics. This is another unique item since fanfic writers don't use drawings as well.

I hopefully answered your question and hope that you allow us to sell our fanfics at NDK :)

Like...I have seen people throw fits over fanfiction being sold in fandom. It's sorta a double standard considering fanart, but I have seen huge. HUGE argument on it, and generally the wrath of fandom comes down on the writer. (I do not agree...quiet the opposite actually)

I think, like you said, if you were going to do this, you should look into what makes yours worth buying, instead of just hoping online to get something very similar for free. IMO, if someone had something illustrated (Not like a comic, but like...if you check out the Illustrated version of Neil Gaiman's Stardust, that should give you an idea) that'd be worth more to me.  And the extra you spoke of, more like a 'zine WITH writing then just a piece of writing.

Yeah, I know all the arguments, and it makes me feel a little sad, but I can always understand the other persons argument throughly lol.

Hopefully, I'll have more info closer to NDK '11 lol. Since I'm still only working on the first fanfic. >.<

I think, if you're going in aware of the issues, you might be able to make something pretty cool then! Good luck!

I have brought this up with the directors, we feel that there is to much potential for legal issues to let you sell fan fiction at the convention. You can still write to your hearts content, you just can't sell them. Sorry.

yuki: selling fanfic is SOOOOOOOOOOO not with the legal. it's not just "potential" legal issues; it's every japanese and american rights holder swarming on NDK's collective butt and making with the suing of NDK's butt that the rest of this metaphor would not be suitable for children. let's just say, there's not enough preparation H in the world to help the butt-pain.

(pardon the hyperbole. been watching s7 buffy)
