AnimeLand Wasabi 2010
« on: January 13, 2010, 10:54:27 pm »
Is anyone going? I've never been to that CON and I was wondering if it is worth it? It looks really small compared to NDK.  But a CON is a CON right? xD

I am going this year, it is worth trying it out, so yeah, just check it out. I am attending though for two days, Friday and Saturday, not going on Sunday, simply because my work and also I need to sleep.

It is interesting and I had fun last year.

Last year was a little disappointing to me as it seemed to be a little cramped. There was a wedding going on at the same hotel and the police presence kind of sucked, too. However, the dealer's room continued to be a highlight as it was the previous year. I'm just hoping that AW can recapture some of the fun that it had in 2008.

Things happen, hell, I bet it happens sometimes at NDK, remember there are things beyond our control and control of con, lol....remember that always. I am sure NDK has the exact same problems. My sister still wants to have her wedding at NDK just so she can get my friends to attend it, haha....I don't think NDK staff would like her for that.

Oh, no, don't get me wrong. I understand all of that stuff. Really, I do. My main concern was really with how cramped it was and I didn't like the programming last year. I haven't given up on AW yet.

As for NDK issues in the past...remember the construction that the Holiday Inn was doing during NDK '03? Now, that sucked...

Having a wedding at NDK? As long as the participants are attendees of the con, that could be pretty cool...the problems arise when the wedding has nothing to do with the con at all and friction tends to come up between con and wedding party...like AW last year...

Back on topic please, if you would like to discuss your experiences of ALW here so that intheschemeofthings can get a better idea of the convention please do so. Further digression will result in the topic being locked.

Hans and Franz will probably show up, but damned if they'll pay for it.

We're also working on Kaiten cosplay.

intheschemeofthings, I actually PM'ed you this before I saw the topic (oops) but I'll pretty much repeat myself here in case anyone else is wondering.

The thing about wasabi is it is a newer convention so it is a bit different that NDK on a few points. Whether or not going to wasabi is worth it depends on what you like the best about conventions.

Since wasabi is smaller it is a great deal more community oriented. It is easier to meet new people/find groups of people to hang out with and flail about things you like ^^ So if you mainly like hanging out with people and wandering around then definitely check it out.
The Dealers room and events are mostly the same, just a bit smaller^^ But It is still well worth the visit ^^
There aren't as many big name guests so far but there are a few good ones.

This is only my opinion but I do think Wasabi is worth it<3

Yeah ^^ That's pretty much it ^^ I hope that helps ^^

It is very worth it and hey who doesn't like another excuse to cosplay huh? This years hotel at the Red lion on quebec is perfect for wasabi and should solve the cramped issue 09 had. As for the wedding, from going in 08 and 09, my theory, wasabi has a curse like ndk's called the wasabi curse where a small normie activity is placed next to all the madness and mayhem that we call otakudom. 08 had a cat show, 09 had the wedding. What will 10 have?... Another wedding? Dog show? Gold investors conference? Who knows.

As a side note (not sure if this is relevant or not) but despite the interruptions of normal events, they actually did make thingskinda fun for some people. The Bride last year came out and took pictures with the cosplayers ^^ She was really Nice and the Cat convention the year before thought the cat girls were cool and talked with some of them. Hey it was a little strange but my point being that they may have been inconvenient, but not Awful ^^ It was unique^^

Its actually too small to be a con (I dont know about now) XD but I think the right word is "show."
An it is our excuse to plan cosplay, wear cosplay, maybe meet some VAs, do skits, have cosplay contests, have photoshoots, hang with people that also go to NDK, buy home-made things in the Artist's Alley, not to mention the dealer's room! =B

In my opinion~ it is worth it =OO

I agree Irony. The normie events actually made the event fun. Imaging we have a dog show (god I love animals) and the dog people love the fursuiters and the fur people loving and petting and acting like a doggie. It'd be cute. Me a cons a con its great to have a 2nd event leading to NDK. You wanted another anime con Colorado? You got it. :)

Sweet, I hope we can find a cheap place to eat and have a group with us. I hate dinning alone and cosplay is just as fun!

Would this be a big enough event that I'd need a hotel room for?
