Well, mistakes are the most common way to gain experience and knowledge =/ before I got to my current dojo, I was with a 'private instructor' who was really just trying to nail my sister >.> (Failed of course, since it turned out all his skills were just talk!) XD

Otherwise, sounds like Xiao goes to a good dojo ^^ And it sounds a lot like mine. (Meaning I must be going to a good one too!) I think it would be the hardest thing to come to terms with, if all your training ended up just being for business =/

Also, Xiao's post brings up another topic maybes. Does anyone here's current/former dojo speak in the original language of the art? Of course it's not important, but some view it as a sense of tradition, and honoring the homeland of your style.
At my dojo, we call the names in Japanese of the stances and moves and kata ect, but of course we speak normally in English.

@daren you can call me purple-sama... I'm just curious how you know that nickname of mine....

I will probably check out the domo dojo and check out a few others next month...  The Teakwondo/Kickboxing dojo I went to in cheyenne was free... also the National gaurd let us use one of their gyms then 9-11 and we had to move then you had to pay a fee T_T... then the Kendo dojo I went to was really good and quite small class... there was only 2 other students besides me... So I got alot of hands on instructions with the sensie...

I found it by being sneaky and reading the text under your name X3

Otherwise, I think that those small, hole-in-the-wall dojo are the best, and more attention from the instructor is a big plus. At the same time, it's always good to have peers to train with =)

When I joined mine, it was pretty tiny, but it's grown a lot since =) (Sad for me, I didn't need the extra attention until now!)

*Wanna say first: I forgot to say XD At that Ushiro Geri, that is a tough one but I find what helps me the most is making sure my legs brush on the way through (assuming we kick the same way). I'm sure you've heard that a lot but if you havn't than just some friendly advice =)

@Purple-Sama- Sounds like a good deal ^^ I think the majority of my dojo when I entered was either 1st dan(First degree Black Belt) to 2nd kyu (2 away from black).
Funny how things turn out, we've had a lot come and go, and now that I've recently hit 3rd kyu, we're coming upon those times again. Vary few newbies to the adult class, but a lot of upper belts.

In college I took a Tai Chi Chuan class, and it was amazing. Our instructor was probably in his 60's and lightning fast. Of course, the class was about slow movements, which was challenging (I'm a bit impatient, lol), but I loved it. We had some big jock like guy who was kind of talking back, asking what was the point of what we were doing, etc, and our instructor, a very small Chinese man, stopped class and gave a little demonstration with the fellow. He blocked everything this big bloke tried on him, and if I recall correctly, I think he put him on the floor. :)

For me, I found the class very centering and really loved it.

About 7 years later, my daughter (about 5 or 6 at the time) and I started going to karate. she was in a kids class and I was in with the adults, but we were learning the same things, including Filipino stick fighting (which was loads of fun). In the karate, we got into yellow and orange belts before we quit.

About 3 years ago, they started up a Tai Chi for Seniors group in the mountain town we were living in, and so I joined in with them from time to time. They were only doing about 1/2 the forms that I had learned, but it was still nice to get back into it.

I really miss the tai chi, the karate, and the stick fighting, and would love to get back into it, but I'm a bit picky - I either want the classes to be near me, or have an amazing instructor/Sensei. I've been spoiled in the past.  :D
Aang: Wow, I haven't cleaned my room in 100 years... Not looking forward to that...

Katara: You've been hallucinating on cactus juice all day, and now you lick something you find stuck to the wall of a cave?
Sokka: I have a natural curiosity.

Oh wow, I can't believe I just found this!
Anyway, I really want to find a place that teaches Muay Thai kickboxing. I've wanted to learn it for quite sometime now. Brazilan Jiu Jitsu would be fun to learn as well. If anybody knows of any places in the denver area, please let me know. ^^

I take Tai chi as well ^_^ (Wu Style). I have to admit, as a Karateka it's a bit against my ways, but it's actually really helpful. Tai chi trains me strongly in both balance and control, but also, personally I really need it as a Yang to my Yin. I am to tight to fight nowadays =/ it's like moving a bag of rocks, so Tai Chi really helps. Also I've picked up a few good moves now and than too!

Hey Daren, are you going to make it to the Friendship Cup tomorrow?  (Err... later today, actually.)  It's at the Colorado School of Mines gymnasium.

Go here for more information, and here for maps and info of CSM.

Five years of krav maga, and four of muay thai kickboxing. Many people believe that martial arts competitions are mainly about respect, but I like to be realistic and say that it's about winning.

uh nice frightning picture there..

Anyway, something I've always wanted to learn about is Jeet Kun Do, that's Bruce Lee's martial craft. However it's not about learning moves, it's more like a state of mind I suppose. They say that no one else can really do it justice because it requires near lightning speed.

That's not necessarily true, it is about a state of mind. Unfortunately Jeet Kun Do is split into two main factions. Those who believe that you should only learn, teach, and use the moves that Bruce Lee did.

The second follows Bruce Lee's actual philosophy, which is learn from everything, take what you like and can use, and discard the rest. I think this helps to make everyone a much more well rounded fighter.

I haven't studied as many martial arts as I would like, but I do mix them all together. I was just thinking the other day I wanted to learn Bartitsu, the martial art developed in Brittain and widely used in the new Sherlock Holmes movie. I've always wanted to learn how to fight with a cane, and once I realized that there was a "school" for it I was interested. However, after doing some research I learned that Bartitsu was a nice conglomerate of: boxing, judo, savatte, and cane fighting. I also learned there are no schools for Bartitsu in Colorado.

Then I thought, I don't need to find a Bartitsu school, just one that covers cane fighting, of which there are many, and just add it in to my repertoire.

That sounds unique, I've never knew there was an official term for cane fighting of any sort.

Yeah, it was developed by Edward William Barton-Wright, who gave it the name Bartitsu. There's an interesting article here if you're interested. I followed some of citation links and found some good stuff.

Ah sorry T.T I would have loved to go. I had forgotten it was there but I'm pretty busy anyways >.<; trying to get a job as a census taker at the moment...

Otherwise, as for this Bruce Lee stuff, my style (Shudokan) is vary similar ^_^ Just a more Japanese approach rather than chinese. However, if you can ever see out kata, you will notice that ours have a distinct chinese 'flavor' to them.
At the International Karate Association allstar cup, everyone but one person performed the same kata: Pinan Yondan. Mine stood out the most because it was so vastly different from the others. I didn't place though =/ (Only places are 1-3d, I was 4th or 5th somewhere in there). Its actually good that the judges didnt just give me the win because my Kata was so different, because those guys who won really earned it!

As for cane fighting, we teach modern Kobuto up in Estes ^_^ You should come! Otherwise, I believe Hojutsu also teaches cane fighting.

I have looked and looked and... No martial arts topic?! I think we need one, I know for a fact that at LEAST 3/4 of anime loving guys out there at least think they can fight! XD

I personally LOVE martial arts of all kinds. Boxing, MMA, Taekwondo, Muay Thai, anything you got, I probably know a little bit about.

So yeah ^^ What kinds do you practice? Any particular philosophies towards violence/force? Combat style vs Competition style? (No flames please) Self tought? Traditional? Nobody should be turned away, if you like fighting, than you got somethin to say!
well i do isshinryu, a style that was "created" on okanowa. manlyy a medittion style of marshal arts
