Martial Arts!
« on: January 13, 2010, 04:40:04 pm »
I have looked and looked and... No martial arts topic?! I think we need one, I know for a fact that at LEAST 3/4 of anime loving guys out there at least think they can fight! XD

I personally LOVE martial arts of all kinds. Boxing, MMA, Taekwondo, Muay Thai, anything you got, I probably know a little bit about.

So yeah ^^ What kinds do you practice? Any particular philosophies towards violence/force? Combat style vs Competition style? (No flames please) Self tought? Traditional? Nobody should be turned away, if you like fighting, than you got somethin to say!

Well I trained for several years in Moo Duk Kwan style Tae Kwan Do, in fact Bakudan was a black belt in my school and did a lot of my training. Unfortunately I never did earn my black belt, I went to college and other obligations got in the way.

For those interested that's the style of martial arts that Chuck Norris studies. :)

Other forms that I have some small to very small amount of training in include tai chi and kenjitsu.

@Bob~ My dojo teaches Shudokan and Gosoku-ryu, the second being headed by Sokei Takyuki Kubota. He sparred Chuck Norris ^^ 3 times I believe. We're like FIST COUSINS! =D Maybe.... 3 times removed, or something? XD

@Dei-dei- I don't know if you ever read/saw Histories Strongest Disciple Kenichi, but Takeda made me take up boxing for a while! XD

I also studied Tae Kwon Do for many years. I got my black belt about 5 years ago and stopped there. I wish I hadn't but it can get rather expensive and other things took priority.
It was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done, though I never could win at tournament...

Well, of course we all know not to just work for the Black Belt. But heck, it's part of our culture, it shows our hard work! But of course, it's the things you learned along the way that really count!

As for tournaments, my dojo's kinda heavy on the combat aspect of fighting, so we don't do well in tournaments over all =/ Although the IKA holds some good ones. It's hard to find a good judge that scores to how you were taught.

@Daren:  Hey, what dojo do you study from, and who's your sensei?  I study Shotokan karate with the FSKA under sensei John Bolosan.  We usually participate in the local tournaments, so I might see you around!  Our dojo will be attending the upcoming Friendship Cup in the Colorado School of Mines, and I'll try to make it provided I get time to practice between the two jobs I'm working at currently.  :S

I'm only a 5th kyu Purple Belt, so I have a long way to go yet.  :P

Aside from that, I've dabbled in kung fu and t'ai chi as well.

Well Xiao ^^ Actually, I do Shudokan. Commonly mistaken with yours Xp but Shudokan's name doesn't have a cool a meaning or origin =/ It was just named after the first dojo it was taught in (Shudokan = Hall of Training). But you know what they say, Karate is Karate! =D

As for tournaments, I had only known of the ones under the CKA, I'm glad to hear there's more! ^^ Unfortunatly, Estes in Winter means no unnecessary expenses >.>; So I couldn't compete until the summer.

3rd kyu here brown ^^ But if I remember correctly, purple was probably my hardest test, and probably the hardest of my time in the dojo, going by rank. I'd say it was Orange when I started really comming to terms with the fact that I wasn't as tough as I thought I was, but purple was when it started hurting physically! XD

edit: @ Nogardous~ An important thing for us all to keep in mind =)

I was 3rd kup myself, though the kup system is numbered differently. I was only 3 tests away from my 1st dan black belt test. I think the hardest one for me was for the red belt (3rd kup) needing to remember all of the forms and I kinda sweated my break. Which of course was totally unnecessary, I apparently did pretty well.

I always enjoy learning from other martial arts though, I even got to spar with a Krav Maga student from the Israeli army once. I threw a kick, he took me to the ground instantly, locked me up, till I hit a nerve he'd never learned about before. I guess technically I won cause he tapped out at that point, but we both learned a lot.

Well, in Karate at least the Roundhouse kick is one of the hardest moves to do! Out of all the basics, it requires probably the most co-ordination and muscle.

@Bob, well I sort of had a similar experience. It was a bunch of guys on a trip from like Minisota or something... I spar'd with a bunch in the park and got my arse whooped so hard that's what got me to start training seriously! XD I suppose they didn't really learn much >.> but I made some friends and a good experience.

@Purple-sama~ Well, jiu jitsu and stuff is grappling, as you probably know. Way different than striking arts, so you gotta look for what style suits you most. If you ask me, all martial arts can probably be broken down into two areas: Striking and Grappling (That includes joint manipulation arts like Aikido and grappling ones like Jiu Jitsu).

Ack! XD Than just Nogardous! Xp

Out of personal preference, I would go with Aikido. It's vary applicable and functional. It has a wide variety of uses from absolutely destroying your opponent to just putting them on the ground without any real harm being done. (ie It's one of those martial arts you can do on the street and not get arrested for horribly mutilating your assailant)

I wouldn't know any good dojos though =/ The best way to go is see if they will let you have a few trial classes and see if it really suits you. Make sure they arn't just ripping you off.

BIG IMPORTANT! : Any dojo that's going to offer you a "Quicker Black Belt" or something by paying extra is just trying to get your money. As a general rule, no dojo should promise you a belt.

@Nogardous:  I will echo Daren on the dojo selection point.  A lot of dojos are run first and foremost as a business, and secondly as a training hall.  Avoid those like the plague, unless your goal is to simply obtain the belt.  A true, dedicated sensei will not force you to test and will not offer "expedited Black Belt programs", or whatever they may be called.

For example, my sensei won't even let you test if he doesn't think you're ready for it.  There is no quick path to a kuro obi; you have to earn it.  That same principle applies for all belts.  If you go to a dojo where they do regular testing whether you're ready or not, in the end, you're just cheating yourself.

@Daren:  I agree on the mawashi geri (roundhouse) being rather difficult, especially on my left side, since that's my weaker side.  Other attacks I find challenging are the ushiro geri (back kick) and the ura mawashi geri (reverse roundhouse).  Sensei can snap that out like nobody's business.  I gotta practice more....

There's an excellent aikido dojo attached to the restaurant Domo on Colfax. You might try them, I know it's a bit out of your way though.
