I wouldn't call someone ignorant for not being able to buy/rent a suit. $100 bucks is too much for one night if you ask me. I've got priorities, I'd rather spend that $100 on Diesel for my truck. And telling someone they can't join because they can't afford/ don't want to pay for a suit? That is a bit over the top.

If you cannot meet the criteria set for an event, you should not be attending that event. I suppose you would walk up to a Member's Only section of a club and try to reason that, although you cannot afford a membership or are not interested in paying for a membership, you should still be allowed in.

Its NDK... expecting a classy only atmosphere is very unlikely, If y'all want that I can give you directions to my grandmas retirement home, they have dances every month.
When I'm at NDK I try not to take anything seriously, Its all for fun.

Oh god no. I only expected people to be formal when it came to their attire. We were goofing around as much as anyone else and being total tards. Unless you're referencing my feelings on the "lost the game" thing, in which case that behavior is just dumb.

See how many tickets sell if wearing a strictly formal is required... Ya always gotta cater to the masses.

YES! Let's all bend to the lowest-common denominator!

Far be it from me to feed the trolls, but to those expecting some high-class formal... well, you were at a New Year's event sponsored by an anime convention where the majority of attendees are 18 and under. If you wanted to go to a party where the dress code was a bit stricter, there were plenty of pay-to-get-in New Year's parties around town, with higher costs to keep the riff-raff out. If NDK does a 21+ New Year's party, you might be able to expect a stricter dress code, but as long as it's all-ages, you deal with it or you don't go.

Gimme Anime hit the nail on the head: a large majority of the Costume Ball attendees were under 21. Most people that age don't have the budget for tuxedo rentals, suits, etc. What you consider "formal," Boomerjinks, is out of the reach of many of our attendees. Which is why we try to set a reasonable baseline for what we consider acceptable. We'll consider changing that baseline (or not) and we'll consider how we enforce that baseline.

Regardless, this is all way off topic and I ask that you move on from this discussion now, or the thread will be locked. This thread is about discussing the experiences at the Costume Ball; it's not a place to debate the dress code.

That's one thing i forgot to mention. I'm sure he doesn't have an account here, but Chef is awesome. Everytime I see him, I have to say "Hey Chef!!!" to him every con and everytime. He's one of my best experiances I have at NDK.

Sorry to respond so late, but wanted to put in our two cents regarding the NYE ball....

Did you like the event?
-Yes!!! It was a fantastic way to spend the evening and a great alternative to a lot of the other parties out there (which have never been our thing.. ;^.^ )

Did you find a date or new friends?
- It was wonderful to meet up with many of the new friends we made at NDK in the fall again, and the general enthusiasm of the crowd really added a lot to the atmosphere!

How is the music and food?
-I liked the balance of the music, in general; I was expecting a little more j-pop but there was enough variety to satisfy most tastes. The lack of Caramelldansen, however...alas!! T.T
I'm joking, of course, but it would be fun for next time if it could be added, since the group dances seemed to be such a hit. The swing music was a nice touch...the only time during the night my friend got to dance a little!
As for food, the Marriott has always provided good food and that night was no exception. The only concern was the temporary lack of water in the ballroom itself; it's a necessity, especially for those of us who were wearing ballgowns and the like, so either more water coolers or a closer eye on the water supply would be in order for future events.

Any unforgettable experience you like to share?
-The group dances were AWESOME!! Getting so many people to participate in "Thriller", "The Time Warp", "Shout", and the other dances was simply amazing, and "The Final Countdown" at midnight was a perfect choice! Mark's little discussion of Japanese New Year's traditions was a nice cultural touch as well...

Any feedback you like to share?
-On the whole, we were delighted with the whole experience, and everything seemed pretty smooth as far as we could tell...

Will you return next year, if not why?
-Most assuredly!! As soon as there's a form to sign up, we're there!  ;D

Hello all!
For those that attended, there are still photos from the photo booth for purchase.  Please take a look at the link below.  I am probably going to keep them available for another month depending on interest.  Also anyone in need of a photographer, let me know.  Thanks again and see you at NDK 2010!!!

This is either madness... or brilliance.
It's remarkable how often those two traits coincide.

i loved the ball!!! it was so much fun!!! i can't believe how amazing that was!!! are we going to have it every year from now on? please!!!! knowing what happened this year has totally helped me with everything, including my love life. after the ball, i felt like i was.... normal almost.... it was scary, but it felt really good. the next week i was at rehearsal after school, and i was so blown up! i got a new record getting down the scaffolding, i won an eating contest, i won a race, and i was able to memorize all my lines IN ONE WEEK!!!! it was AWESOME!!!!!!! i attribute all that to the ball.
