I think it would be pretty cool to set up a winter photoshoot, specifically planned around the weather. Okay mybe not specifically, but it would be nice to have snow for the shoot. This will give those with rather warm cosplays to do a shoot where they won't fry, and new challenges for photographers! I don't know when we want to do this, wheather it be in the next two month or if we want to wait for the REAL cold weather.

I'll need help setting this up, it will be my first time helping plan a photoshoot, I know a lot of poeple are in Denver, though there are a lot of people farther south too.... hmmm so let's see, I know for a fact that there can be times when it will snow in Monument and the lower altitudes are untouched therefore making driving much safer. Votes on locations anyone?

Horses!!!!! but it would need to be either on a weekend or when the schools down here are on break... The horese's owner(my mother) will want to be there.

weekends would always be best. and, having horsies there would be awesome! But, random idea for a place, (i have no idea what the park is called lol) but its right across the street from the denver art musem, that just a big nice place for pictures and stuff. thats just one idea.

A winter photoshoot sounds like fun. Good news is that you don't need a reflector since the snow works wonders.

However I'm not sure when a good time is. To be honest, going when the snow is wet and sloppy doesn't sound very good as there will be muddy brown footprints everywhere. Problem is that to get nice crisp snow you have to wait until it's bitter cold, and then the issue of frigid fingers having trouble working buttons and making poses comes into play.

Either way, if we do it I'm bringing hot coco.

A place where we could have a fire would be nice too.... I'll be sure to bring lots of other hot drinks too, ie coffee, cider ect...

the biggest problem with this plan is that we do want snow for the pictures however it can't have snowed enough to make the drive too dangerous....
This is why location is important! I know of a few places that aren't very hard to get to that when it may snow there it won't be near as bad at lower elevations, making it safer to get there.

I suggested Monument, or the Black Forest, anyone else have any ideas on locations?

This may be far away from some people...(Including myself) But maybe around Flatirons, or maybe in Boulder. It's a bit of a drive though, but areas around there are beautiful, especially Boulder with the mountains so close. But just a suggestion. ^^

that is pretty far for a lot of us..... hmmmm there are some places close to the mountains that shouldn't be too hard to get to in Manitou Springs (the Base of Pikes Peak) but again that might be a bit of a drive for a lot of people.... we need more suggestions....

Okay, update for any still interested in this, I have referenced my Farmers Almanac for a date on when there will be snow, and made the appropriate phone calls! I will be copying this onto my first post for reference.

official plan:

Date: Friday March 12th

Location: Castlewood Canyon State Park
2989 South State Highway 83
Franktown, CO 80116

More info: There is an acivity fee for a photographer, but I will be taking care of that cost depending on who wishes to be our 'professional' photographer for the day, just so we're all squared away with the park and don't get in trouble.

There is also a $6 per vehicle parking cost, carpoolers will have to provide this individually.

pets: they allow dogs but they must be on a leash of course, there is no extra fee for this, they do not allow horses, so I will be bringing my two dogs. Feel free to bring your own, please remember, they must be well trained and socialized. My girls are very people and dog friendly.

The snow idea sounds awesome, but I don't know about the location. I have a friend who lives in castle rock along that stretch of the road, and my experience as well as from what she told me, driving around there in the snow is not very fun. It is especially colder because of the altitude and HWY 86 going into HWY 83 can become rather narrow and curvy. But, hoping everything will go smoothly as you planned, and I would like to join you guys if I'm able to ^_^

I know the area well enough, I live on the north end of ColoSprings and drive by there almost every time I head up to Denver. It might be a little safer... though a bit of a further drive to take a more southern route ie the Douglas/Elpaso County Line Road south of Larkspur or somewhere in between. I checked the almanac, it should be decent temerature without being warm enough to melt all the snow and make it too dirty or sloshy.

The icy roads were going to be an issue from the start no matter where we were going to plan it. This is planned for a day or two after the Farmer's Almanac's planned precipitation for that week, hopefully it's all snow and no rain... that would spoil everything, but anyway, it should be long enough after that the roads will be at least plowed if not completely clear.

I'm not sure what special event permits would be required (if any) but we'll need to get this worked out. There won't be any professional photography being done (Pro implies someone actually gets paid for things XD ) but if the number of people is enough then we may need a special activity permit.

If you want I can look into this and find out what would be needed if you don't want to do it yourself; just let me know.

I made the phone calls nessecary, I talked to the park manager and she said if it is going to be a group of I think it's 10 or more we will need the permit.

I already have the paperwork for the permit so it's all taken care of...

Sadly I just looked at the date and you have this on a weekday. One of the nice advantages of my job is that I know I get weekends off, but at the same time it means I can't swap shifts with anyone on weekends since we're closed.

That said I'll look at what I can do but more likely than not able to come since I'll be at work. I'm really sorry. ;.;

well poo... when it gets closer to that date and we get a more modern look at the weather I'll see if I can change it to the next day... I know a lot of people are in school, or work similar jobs, so if enough people need a date change I'll wing it somehow.
