I know there has already been a thread started on this topic, but it contains as many questions and speculations as answers, so I'd like to start the official event announcement thread here.
What is NDK NYE? A costume ball to ring in the new year! It is not going to be a "mini-con", but its own event. We've got the large Rocky Mountain Ballroom at the Marriott DTC (aka 'main events') booked for the evening.
When is it? The fun starts at 8pm December 31, 2009, and ends at 1am on January 1st 2010.
Tickets are $15. You can register online right now. It's one of the options shown when you click to our online registration system.
The hotel is offering great room rates for those who wish to spend the night.
$69 for up to two per room
$79 for three to a room
$89 for four to a room
Taxes are extra
How do you get these room rates? We have an online code for the passkey system:
https://resweb.passkey.com/Resweb.do?mode=welcome_ei_new&eventID=1453497The first 100 to book a room with the hotel will be entered into a drawing to win their stay free! When will this drawing occur? Once we get at least 100 rooms booked. We'll keep you posted on the status of this drawing.
Food and Drink will be available for purchase, and a cash bar will be available. Like at NDK, anyone wishing to drink alcohol will have to show ID to get a wrist band that will allow you to purchase alcoholic drinks.
How formal is formal for this Costume Ball? Simply put, no street clothes (jeans/t-shirt). At a minimum, if you're not going to be in costume, we'd like to see dress slacks/button up shirt, or a dress/skirt. Ties and jackets are recommended. If you're going in costume, get creative! How would your character look if he/she were going to a prom? a wedding? royal court? Have fun with this, but stick to the regular NDK costume rules.
I'd also like to add that if you don't want to, or are not able, to attend the dance in a formal cosplay of sorts, you could have some fun by adding a masquerade mask to your dress clothes. You don't have to spend a lot of money to do this either. You could get a blank mask from a craft store and decorate it any way you want. You could even interpret a favorite character in mask form only. Do an image search on venetian masks or masquerade masks to get inspired. Just by adding something as simple as a mask, you could turn a normal formal dance outfit into something fun and different to celebrate new years.
There will be a balloon drop at midnight, as well as other entertainment and door prizes throughout the evening. We're working on incorporating a lot of Japanese New Year's traditions into this event as well.
A variety of music will be played. Rest assured, this wont be a "stuffy" event, but it won't just be a rave either.
There will be an attendance cap. What it is depends on the final configuration of the Ballroom. We're still hashing those details out, but the attendance cap will be related to fire code. So, stay tuned. Needless to say, the earlier you register the better! And if it looks like we're going to have to cap the event, we'll post that as well.
As this is the first time we are having this event, we are still developing some of the final details. Ultimately, we're designing this event for you, and we want you to enjoy it. If you have any suggestions as to what you'd like to see at a New Year's event, please post below. While we won't be able to accommodate every suggestion, (especially at a $15 ticket price), we want to hear your thoughts so as this event goes on, it can grow into an event you'd like to attend every year.
If you'd like to discuss your costume plans, please post in this thread:

Details as they develop will be posted here as well. Thanks for the interest! We can't wait to see you all again to ring in the new year!
