i'm going to open a hueg kettle of worms here, greg, so be forewarned.
host clubs are very popular at other conventions. they frequently are put in panel rooms, and are like the goth-loli tea parties. no money is charged, and snacks are donated by the ppl who run the host club. in fact, i've never heard of a host club charging anything at any convention i've been to. that way, it avoids all the legal, sticky issues that surrounds food sales.
HOWEVER
if something like this were go to through, i would suggest a counter-panel on what host clubs actually _are_ in japan. while i realise that host clubs and maids and the like are very much a part of anime culture now, the way they're portrayed, like in ouran, isn't what the reality is. all the kids see are funny stories, and girls in pretty maid costumes, or pretty boys in tuxes, being charming and funny. the reality couldn't be more shockingly different. i think the kids should be educated on the topic, and might look at that segment of japanese culture a lot differently.
