Concerning spoilers...
« on: May 10, 2006, 12:19:48 am »
Just so we nip this in the bud, before it becomes a problem, let us have a little discussion about spoilers. Personally, they do not bother me, but I am fully aware and understand that some people do not appreciate hearing about story's climactic moments before they get a chance to experience them. For this reason, I have added a special tag to the system called hide.

It works something like the other tags in the forum. jsut surround the text you want to hide with the tags like this (remove the extra spaces):
Code: [Select]
This text will be hidden.
The text in between the tags will be hidden to anyone who hasn't replied to the thread. I do encourage you to surround the text with some sort of warning though. Something like SPOILER!!!.

Feel free to reply with your own recommended spoiler methods also.

Cool!  I happen to be anti-spoiler so I appreciate it.  I would suggest an alternate method (since you were kind enough to ask...):  Can the text be embedded in a window that expands out when clicked?  Or pops up?

I saw this on a web page that reported a general error, and if you clicked the text it would show you the full error.  You click again and it disappears.  It may require more scriptwitchery than the forum structure allows, but that's my suggestion.

My reasoning is this - maybe I want to read the spoilers but I don't necessarily want to post "Yes me too" just to see the spoilers.  Plus, once someone posts, they might find out everyone else has been saying the same thing when the spoilers appear.

Don't get me wrong, I think your idea is a great way to start, elegant in its ease of implementation.  Better than me holding a hand over a paragraph, dropping my Cheesy Poofs all over my screen while I try to scroll past.

That is the sort of modification I was looking for at first, but I haven't found it yet. I am keeping an eye out for it. Unfortunately, I am pretty good and designing a page and getting premade systems working, but coding functionality to such a system is not my strong point.

Ok, I have a Spoiler tag mod working now, so you can use that. The following code will properly mark a spoiler until you really want to look at it:

Code: [Select]
Oh my gosh! You are so spoiled!
will produce

So far, nothing popped up. Highlighted your entire post and nothing showed.

There, now it should show. The modification put in another permission setting that I had to go hunt down. That was rather unexpected.

Ah, that's different. All I've seen before is the highlighting one.

This is a good feature to have on a forum, I don't really mind spoilers unless its something REALLY shocking or important, then I would rather wait to see it myself.

Spoilers irk me a little bit, but they're not too bad unless its an anime i'm really into at the moment.

So thanks for the new feature!
