The Rules of NDK - 2009
« on: August 31, 2009, 12:02:16 pm »
Welcome to NDK!  Every year about this time I do a post similar to this.  So please read through it, even if you have attended multiple times.  It never hurts to remind ourselves of the rules, so that we can all have fun at NDK.  These have been updated quite a lot since last year!

This thread is a general listing of our con rules.  You can find them all over our main webpages, but this is a short summary of most of them.  This list is neither comprehensive nor complete.  These are simply the major rules to live by while at the con.  Please follow them all, and we can all have a better experience at Nan Desu Kan.  Violation of these rules, especially multiple times, may result in being asked to leave the con.

First, the links:
General Rules - http://ndkdenver.org/info/rules/general-rules
Anti-Harrassment Policy - http://ndkdenver.org/info/rules/anti-harassment
Weapons Policy - http://ndkdenver.org/info/rules/weapons-policy

And now, the main Rules themselves!
  • No Shirt, No Shoes, No Con!  All costumes and clothing should be family friendly.  Please make sure that you are covering all of your naughty bits.  This means wear tops, wear bottoms.  Nudity of any kind, even the illusion of such, will not be tolerated.  Look at it this way, if you aren't sure if it is ok, then it probably isn't.  So guys, if you want to go around without a shirt on, please reread the first sentence of this bullet.  Shoes are a must as well.  This is very much for your own safety, as one never knows what has been left on the floor.  Yes, bad things have happened to people's feet in the past.  For information on the cosplay contest rules, see http://ndkdenver.org/activities/cosplay/contest-rules
  • Hugs and glomps are something many people enjoy, and other people do not.  Unwanted affection is NOT okay.  Always ask if you do not know the person, and if they say no, accept it!  Not only can this behavior have negative mental and physical effects, but it can also get you banned from the con.
  • Steel or metal weapons of any kind are not allowed at NDK.  This means that live steel blades should not be brought to the convention whatsoever, and blades bought at the convention itself should be immediately taken to your hotel room or car.  This applies as well to firearms/projectile weapons of any kind.  Realistic guns are allowed only by special permission for the cosplay contest ONLY.  In short, leave your weapons at home!
  • Attendees shopping for adult content within the dealer room will be required to show their ID for proof of age.  Please do not view adult material in the halls or any other area of the con.
  • Underage drinking will not be tolerated.  If you are under 21, don't drink.  If you are of age please stop by Ops to get your wristband.  Alcohol is not permitted in the con unless it was purchased at the hotel bar, and even then is not allowed away from the bar area or nearby halls.  This is more than just a con policy, it is hotel policy as well.  Public intoxication will not be tolerated, and you will be asked to leave.
  • Be courteous with your props, and aware of them at all times.  Also, no Pointy Bits!  Our Emergency Medical Services staff prefers not to have to patch people up from being bludgeoned, tripped, or otherwise mangled.
  • No shoplifting.  This is just common sense.  All of us want a lot of the nifty stuff filling the dealer room from top to bottom, but if you are caught stealing anywhere in the con, you will be banned forever.  It's not worth it!
  • No vandalism.  We like this hotel very much, and their staff has done much in the way of support.  It would be a poor show of gratitude to have any of our attendees give all of us, both staff and attendees, a bad reputation.
  • Please keep track of your children.  We are a family friendly con, and we hate to see lost children.  If you do lose your child (or parent!), ask a staff member for assistance and we will do all we can to help you.
  • Please try to keep profanity to a minimum.  Children are in attendance here.
  • Running in the halls is fairly dangerous at NDK.  Trust me, the con isn't going anywhere, so walking does us all just fine.

All of these rules are for your own safety and well-being, and we follow them all ourselves.  If you see someone in violation of these rules, feel free to find the nearest security or other staff member.  We're here for you!  Here are some things you should know about our Safety Staff:

-Our Safety Staff is on duty 24 hours at the con.  There is not a minute of the con where one of us cannot be reached.  Any staff member can help you or point you in the right direction if you need any assistance.
-If an attendee blatantly violates any of the rules of the convention, he/she will have their badge punched, meaning they have used their one chance, and any further violations will result in being banned from the con.  Some violations will directly result in banishment, such as shoplifting or vandalism.
-We enjoy working to make our con better, and we love it when there are none of these problems.  The less we see of you in an official sense, the better we all feel about the con.  We love being bored (it makes time to go see more stuff at the con!).

There are additional policies listings and descriptions for most specific areas of the con, especially in regards to Cosplay, Dealer Room, and Video Game Room.  If you have any questions regarding security and safety at the con, simply reply to this post and myself or others will answer them to the best of our knowledge.

All of us from the Nan Desu Kan Staff wish you all a wonderful experience, and we look forward to seeing you there.

What do you mean by realistic gun. What do you consider realistic?

To avoid any additional confusion, potential for misinformation or misdirection, I am going to go over NDK's policy regarding guns.  This is something that has not been specifically clarified over the years since I have taken charge of Operations, and after having discussed this at length with the Executive Directors after this year's Kan, we will be updating the website's rules page regarding the weapons policy this spring.  In the interim, here is the policy regarding guns, or specifically, replica firearms, since guns are not allowed at Nan Desu Kan.

Generally:
- Replica firearms must have a brightly-colored tip of their barrel.
   (please see examples below)
- Replica firearms must be cleared of any ammunition that they can hold.
(i.e. pellets, BBs, darts, Nerf darts, quarrels, bolts, caps, water, etc.)
This will be checked when the weapons are brought to Ops for peace-bonding.
- BB Guns and Pellet Guns are not allowed.

Airsoft Weapons:
- As above, they must have a brightly-colored tip and must be cleared of any ammunition.
- The body or receiver of the weapon must be clear, transparent, or translucent.
- The power source or propellant (if it can have one) must be removed.
This includes batteries, compressed air, CO2, or propane.

Cap Guns:
- As above, they must have a brightly-colored tip and must be cleared of any caps.

Water Guns:
- As above, they must have a brightly-colored tip and must be cleared of any liquids.

Prop Guns:
- As above, they must have a brightly-colored tip and must be cleared of any ammunition.

Examples of what is allowed:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/sumisu/4320441970/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sumisu/4319708905/

--- You could paint any of the brightly-colored examples like the first Nerf example (or completely black), and as long as the tip remains brightly-colored, they would still be acceptable.

Examples of what is not allowed, and why:

- Airsoft Weapons -
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sumisu/4319708591/
No colored tip, and with the way it is marked, it looks like an actual SIG.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sumisu/4320441394/
Even though these have orange tips, they do not have transparent/translucent bodies.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sumisu/4320452984/
Once again, orange tip, but an opaque body.  Yes, the magazine/clip on top of the P90 is transparent, but it is on the real thing.

- Cap Guns -
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sumisu/4320443542/
 No colored tip.

- Water Guns -
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sumisu/4320443680/
 No colored tip.

- Prop Guns -
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sumisu/4320442668/
Yes it's a Resistance replica rifle, but there's no colored tip.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sumisu/4319709529/
Yes, Lady's gun is obviously fake, but the bayonet looks like it is made of metal, and metal blades are not allowed at NDK.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/sumisu/4320442308/
Even though once again, this is obviously not a real chain gun, the young woman has attached what looks like a belt of real ammunition to it.  If there was an empty feed assembly attached to the gun, this would be acceptable.

These rules will go live on the main site in the next few months, as well as the updated melee weapon rules.  If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to PM me.
The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it.
