Parking for those not staying at hotel
« on: August 17, 2009, 03:10:35 pm »
Well, as is obvious from the subject line, I was wondering how bad the parking will be for those of us not staying at the hotel.

I will be driving up there all 3 days and am wondering if I will even be able to find a place to park Saturday and Sunday.  While the hotel parking lot will likely be full on the weekend, are there any free lots to park at in the area?  As long as I can walk there within half an hour or so I'm good.

Parking is always very rough from friday morning all the way through sunday night.  Because NDK sells out all of the rooms for the hotel, and most of the rooms are for the entire weekend, the parking lot stays pretty full until the con is over. On friday if you show up early enough, around 8am-9am you shouldn't have a hard time finding a spot, but from then on till sunday night you really just need to get lucky.

Don't park in any of the lots around the hotel either, they do tend to get a little upset by that and have been known to tow away cars without a parking pass for those lots. My suggestion to you would be, find a parknRide and take the light rail to the belview station which is located just on the other side of the highway of the hotel. Then you can just walk over the bridge and you're good to go.

Man, I didn't even consider parking way back and taking the rail, that could work out perfectly.  So far it's either that or find the nearest Walmart to park at and walk from there.

Oh, and in a related question, there are plenty of places within walking distance to go eat right?

Note however, that if your car is registered in the county where you park and then ride, your first overnight parking is free. After that RTD is charging for parking. I don't know how much they charge, but you can check their site below for more information.

If you have an in-district license, The Belleview Station is free if you're going to be coming and going.  Since you're driving up everyday, you should be able to get a decent spot - at least on Saturday and Sunday.  Friday you'll probably have a better chance getting a spot at the hotel as the lot will be completely full for the work day.

If you're out of district, there will be a fee - 2 dollars a day, I think.

Then you can just walk down Belleview to the hotel!

I am driving and hopefully will be able to find a parking spot, I will be carpooling with another person or two so it should be good.

I totally forgot about the light rail option, I might have to park at Nine mile and take the light rail, it could be fun to see what the riders of RTD would think of a soul reaper....

Cosplayers on the light rail is becoming a yearly thing with NDK now lol. If i'm not mistaken, there was even an article in the paper about it a year or two ago.

Oh, and in a related question, there are plenty of places within walking distance to go eat right?

There are a few places to eat in walking distance.  Garcia's resteruant, wendy's, chipotle, and taco bell come to mind.  I think there is a thread about is exactly that too if you wanna go check it out.

Ah cool, now if y'all will pardon my n00bness, I guess the question of the moment is:  Does everyone in the dealer room take credit cards, or will I have to fatten my wallet up with cash before I come on down?

Also, I had the same thought about soul reapers on the light rail... I honestly wonder what would happen if I bought my replica katana with me (it isn't sharp, but it is metal).

Hmmm.. as long as I carry it in plain sight I shouldn't be breaking any laws, and long as I keep it sheathed no one would know it's metal...  That or carry it in a box/wrapping of some kind and take it out at the con..

Most do, but not all. Bringing cash with you isn't a bad idea; the ATM at the hotel runs out of money very quickly.

We don't allow any blades at NDK for any reason, even if they're dull-edged replicas. Please leave it at home.

Well, that answers both of my questions quite thoroughly!

Are plastic swords OK? I still got time to get one of those, if not I'll just go without.

Plastic swords are fine; you just need to make sure they're peace-bonded when you get to the con.

For future reference, here's our official weapons policy: http://ndkdenver.org/info/rules/weapons-policy

I think Plastic and Cardboard/foam board swords are okay but they still need to be "peace bonded"   Which involves checking them in at the Hotel Desk or check in Table to have a bright piece of zippy strip attached to them.   Correct me if I am wrong about this Greg.

Edit: I posted before checking if there was already a response.

Ah cool, I'll have to pick one up then.  No time to make anything on my own, but maybe next year if my life doesn't go into full circus mode for over half a year again.

You can find a somewhat decent plastic sword at places like Party City or maybe even Toys R Us.

I think we good, I got all my questions so far answered.  Dunno if the thread should be closed, or turned into a general "n00b questions about NDK for first timers" thread.  I dunno if any more questions will pop up, usually doesn't happen till i am about to sleep...
